This paper will compare the different learning styles of the VARK questionnaire. It will differentiate the results of the questionnaire and one’s preferred learning style. There are three different learning styles in the VARK questionnaire and a combination of four scores are used to determine one’s learning style.
The VARK questionnaire provides a combination of four scores. The four scores the VARK questionnaire analyses are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. A VARK profile is a combination of these four scores and gives one a learning preference. It also allows a person to see the varieties in learning preferences. The majority of people have a multimodal learning preference. In a multimodal learning style, multiple preferences are used while learning. A combination of any of the four scores may make up one’s learning style. Some people learn best using an aural learning preference. These people learn best by hearing the information aloud. They learn to take notes and then recite the information aloud. A person with an aural learning style learns best when they are able to hear directions and speak the answers. Others learn best by the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic learners are also known as tactile learners. This means that they learn best by doing the task to be done. They tend to have good hand-eye coordination. (Mayer, R.E. 2001)
My preferred learning style is the multimodal learning style. Approximately 60% of the population has this learning style. The multimodal learning style means that multiple preferences are used when learning. After completing the VARK questionnaire, four scores are given to assess one’s personal learning preference. Any combination of the four VARK scores can be used in the multimodal…...

Vark: Learning Styles

...Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS 429V Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic are key elements of individual learning styles. Learning styles is a term used to refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting, organizing, and thinking about information. How people best learn and communicate can be measured by using a simple questionnaire called VARK that assesses the Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic learning and communication styles of individuals. VARK in itself is not a learning style but a measurement tool that focuses on ways that people best receive information and the way people best deliver their communication. By understanding a preferred learning style an individual can use their own strengths to better process information, and coordinate their learning and communication. VARK: Measurement of Learning Styles By focusing on ways that people learn and the way they communicate what they’ve learned is the premise of the VARK inventory. It is a simple sixteen-question test that uses real world questions in dynamic setting. VARK uses four different sensory categories: visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. In some learners a combination of categories exists and is classified as multimodal. The Visual learner, characterized by “V” is an individual who processes information best if they can see it. They have strong visualization skills and like to utilize charts, graphs and pictures. Aural, “A” is......

Describe Your Learning Style

...Running head: How Do I Learn Best How Do I Learn Best Kelli Powell Grand Canyon University: NRS 429V September 30, 2012 What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner can switch from one type of learning style to another depending on what the subject is being learned and or their mood, Fleming (2011). After taking the VARK questionnaire, Multimodal learning styles was assessed as the learning style of choice. The multimodal learning environments allow instructional elements to be presented in more than one sensory mode (visual, aural, written, and kinesthetic), Sankey, Birch & Gardiner (2010). In this particular case visual and kinesthetic were the dominate methods of learning. Strategies of learning that this person uses are highlighting and underlining notes, grouping subjects together with a certain color highlighter, use of charts, graphs and images to help them learn the subject matter.......

...Running head: LEARNING STYLES LEARNING STYLES Tina Iwegbu Grand Canyon University: NRS-429 Family-Centered Health Promotion SZARONOS, TAMMI July 07, 2012 LEARNING STYLES Introduction The VARK learning style assessment was designed by Neil Fleming in 1987. These learning assessments are designed to help students identify their learning strengths or challenges. Every successful student understands their learning style and can put the right support and strategies in place because each student has his or her formula for effective learning. Each person has preferences in the way that information is learned. Some may need to have visual materials, while others prefer written, auditory, or kinesthetic and of course there are a number that will be multimodal and will require a combination of learning styles. By reviewing the different learning styles, students can determine how they learn best. There are four types of learning styles mentioned in the VARK assessment 1. Visual: A visual learner likes to write, take a lot of notes and sit in front of the class where they cannot be disturbed or distracted because he or she want to see the teacher or instructor’s demonstrations. They often close their eyes to visualize the things being said and benefit from illustrations or presentations that use colors. They are attracted to spoken or written languages. 2. Aural: An aural learner works with sound and music. They can play......

Learning Style

...Learning Style Following a review of the Vark Questionnaire and Analysis, it has been determined that preferred learning style is multimodal. The Multimodal learning preference refers to the utilization of multiple learning strategies which consists of Aural, Visual, Read-Write and kinesthetic learning preferences (ARK). Statistically, 60% of any population is believed to utilize multiple preferences for learning strategy. In utilizing the multimodal style of learning, one is able to use multiple preferences for learning and interaction with others. This means that one has choices of two, three or four modes with which to learn or interact. Due to this flexible learning style one is able to use whichever mode fits depending on the situation or circumstance. It is often necessary for people with multimodal learning preferences to utilize more than one strategy to learn and communicate when compared to those who use single strategy for learning. Those who use single preference for instance, aural strategy “often get it” by using specific strategies consistent with that single preference. Multimodal learners are often “context specific” when choosing the mode that best fits the need. They often look at the information that has to be learned or conveyed to another person and then choose the mode that they believe is the best one for that situation (Neil D Fleming). Aural (hearing) Strategy – In this form of learning strategy, there is a preference to hear and listen. This...

...Learning Style Analysis Kathie Kaiser Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V June 23, 2013 Learning Styles Analysis Everybody has their own way of learning, how they like to receive information, process it, and file it in their brain for future use either for their jobs or for formal education. The most common styles of learning are Visual, you like to see what you are learning, Aural, you like to hear what you are learning, Read/Write you like to see on paper in words what you are learning, Kinesthetic, you like a hands on approach to learning, and Multimodal you learn best using different styles. This writer completed the VARK questionnaire to discover her learning styles. The VARK questionnaire has 13 questions and indicates the preferences in which learning is taken in. It is not a definitive measure of learning, just a tool to discover learning preferences. VARK Questionnaire with scores From the profile generated from the VARK questionnaire, this writer confirmed that she enjoys a variety of learning styles, this is known as multimodal. The VARK learning scores were Visual=5, Aural (hearing) =10, R (read/write) =12, and K (Kinesthetic) =7 for a total score of 34 (Fleming). This is very close to what the writer already knew about her preferred learning styles. Preferred learning styles According to the VARK questionnaire this writers’ strongest learning preference is read/write. When listening to a lecture, writing notes and seeing a power point......

Vark Learning Styles

...October 29, 2013 The VARK Learning Styles The VARK Questionnaire determined that the preferred learning style of the writer is multimodal, which is a combination of kinesthetic (9), read/write (7), aural (5), And visual (2). Kinesthetic, Read/write, and aural were the strongest method of learning, while visual was the least preferred. Multimodal learners account for 60% of the population. Using multiple preferences allows you to choose different ways to learn and interact with others, which is beneficial to align with any style learner or teacher. Multimodal learners use more than one learning style to achieve effective learning and interaction. However, the study shows that those who scored less than 25 used the highest score as the main learning style ("VARK," 2012). “Perhaps the most simple way of describing ‘learning styles’ is to say that they are different methods of learning and understanding new information, the way a person takes in, understand, expresses and remembers information” ("Learning Style," 2008, p. 1) The preferred learning strategies of the writer are a collaboration of all four learning styles. Versatility of using more than one learning style helps effectively develop superior studying techniques and interactive skills. Learning strategies that have worked in the past are hands on techniques, attending classes regularly, watching demonstrations, asking questions, practicing like questions, reading information over and over, exchanging......

Learning styles vary for each individual. The VARK model, designed by Neil Fleming, is a guide that focuses on 4 different learning styles, Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. Students who utilize the VARK model, to focus on preferred learning styles may increase their educational experience, and satisfaction with the learning process. This paper will focus on the preferred learning styles, strategies, and changes to current learning styles, of the author, after taking the VARK questionnaire. Learning Styles and Preferences Learning is more satisfactory, for the author, when utilizing several different styles of learning or multimodal as described in the VARK model.(Flemming, 2001-2011) However, focus is usually centered around action while learning, doing, utilizing hands on experiences, and visual aids, this learning style represent the kinesthetic, and visual learning styles as defined in the VARK model.(Flemming, 2001-2011) The author would prefer learning when content is provided in diverse methods, nevertheless, is able to adapt to different styles with the use of modifications, to enhance learning. A Review of Multmodal Learning Styles

...A Review of Multimodal Learning Style and Strategies The multimodal learning style is highly adaptive and is the most common type of learning style. It can encompass a strong preference two or more of the styles, or an equal preference for all of the 4 learning styles: aural, visual, read/write and kinesthetic. According to Fleming, students who prefer the multimodal learning style tend to fall into two categories: the context specific approach and the whole-sense approach. (Fleming, 2011, para.2). These two approaches are not strictly delineated; there are often some transitional areas between each style. In the context specific approach, the student will choose one of the four learning style that best suits the immediate situation, or context of the situation. Learning is done concentrating on one style in their group of preferred styles that fit the situation best. Problems arise when the style chosen is the incorrect. The student using the context specific approach needs to be aware of which mode they are using to be able to switch to the appropriate mode when having difficulty in understanding material. In the whole sense approach, the student combines multiple learning styles to fit the need of the situation. They use many routes to ensure the learning is completely understood and retained. This can cause some problems as using the multiple styles can lengthen the time it takes for the multimodal learner to feel sure they have learned the subject and if material is...

Vark Styles of Learning

...October 6, 2013 Vark Styles of Learning Analysis A learning style is a unique and specific ongoing process in every individual’s life. There are many different ways that people learn and it can vary greatly among individuals. Learning style is referred by Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork (2008) in their article Learning Styles: Concepts and Evidence “as the concept that individuals differ in regard to what mode of instruction or study is more effective for them”. There have been various models created to illustrate the different learning styles. The visual, aural, read and write, and kinesthetic (VARK) model, developed by Neil D. Fleming consists of a questionnaire that helps an individual identify how they process information. After the style of learning is identified, it suggests that will assist the individual in the learning process. Different types of learning styles include visual learners; these individuals learn best by looking at illustrations or watching videos. The next style is the auditory; these individuals learn better by being part of a discussion group or lecture. The reading/writing learners learn best by reading textbooks or taking notes. The last style is the kinesthetic learner; these individuals learn best by doing things, hands on. To enhance the quality of learning, individuals need to be aware of their style of learning. Summary of my Styles of Learning While some individuals rely on only one type of learning style, most......

...My Learning Style Learning styles are part of a mental map that when dissected and analyzed, will help people to understand their learning anatomy, and hopefully will guide their future learning experiences to make the best use of their big and strong learning musculature. To start, the learning analysis and this writer learning styles and strategies will be introduced. Second, a comparison of my own and Vark’s analysis of strategies will be presented, and finally, an assessment of changes on study habits for this writer will be offered. First, our focus here will be the Styles included on the VARK analysis which questions are focus on the way we take-in and give-out information. These Learning styles are Visual, Aural, Red/Write, and Kinesthetic. My learning style is Multimodal (three model) with strongest points on the visual mode which was 12, kinesthetic 10, read/write 10, and Aural 4. As seen by the numbers, none of the three styles stands out. Translating this, it might take longer for this writer to feel confident about the understanding and retaining of the information because involves not only seen something, but , getting examples, pictures about it, writing about it and also having some practice or hands-on, that help to get the best of the learning endeavor. However this allows for flexibility of choosing the best styles for the specific learning experience. Individual Learning Style

...Individual Learning Style Life is constant learning, including lessons that vary regardless of our preferences. The way we like to learn is unique for everybody and depends on a person’s learning style. Learning styles depict on four different ways of learning and according to the VARK guide, they are Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic. In this essay I will present my learning styles, preferred learning strategies and show a comparison between preferred and identified strategies. Also, I will review how individual learning styles and strategies impact teaching and learning. The VARK questionnaire results show that I have “Multimodal” learning style. It appears that the multimodal style is equilibrium for all four learning styles. Multiple preferences are unique when it comes to that they give you a possibility to choose between all four approaches to our learning and four intercommunications with others. By matching multiple modes to meaningful people that surround us, we create a positive attitude. However, people that wish to cause irritation may choose a mode that is different from the other person’s mode. As my kinesthetic strategy prevails in my learning style, I can consider it significant and preferred in my learning process. Fundamentally kinesthetic learning means that the learner has a demand to be vigorously doing something in order for the process of learning to be productive. It is difficult for these people to concentrate and learn when they are......

...All people have a different learning style such as visual, auditory or kinesthetic, but everyone has a dominant one. When a person is learning he or she uses the learning style that is suitable for them. There is a tool called VARK- A guide to learning by Neil D. Fleming that can determine which learning style each person prefers. According to the VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) system questionnaire I scored Visual: 9, Aural: 3, Read/Write: 7 and Kinesthetic 9 and was considered a multimodal learner which is someone who has multiple preferences. As stated in the VARK learning styles 60% of the population fits this category. The learning style I prefer is kinesthetic. Throughout my career in military law enforcement I was able to learn many different ways, but I learned faster and retained more for a longer period of time if I can see what I am doing and having the hands on approach. I believe being able to do it yourself or having the chance to be more hands on with the problem can help the person get a far better understanding. My other preferred style is Visual. This style will benefit me because it helps me to have a visual of what I need in order to understand. Andragogy is a model of adult learning and education developed by Malcolm Knowles. ...Vark Learning Style Assessment The vark learning assessments help people different ways of learning. It backs up people who have problems with their learning. Multimodal learning style suits me the best. Majority of people come under the multimodal style when they think of studying. It is a combination of visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic learning preference (VARK 2009). Though aural and kinesthetic are identified in majority, read/write and visual are well preferred for me as well. Summary of my learning style Multimodal learning style is my preferred learning style. Assessment scores are twelve for aural, nine for kinesthetic, eight for read/write and seven for visual reading. Aural learning is by listening, discussing and remembering what you have learned. Read/write is taking information from dictionaries, handouts, textbooks and taking notes. Visual learning includes graphs, diagrams, videos, flow chart and so on. Kinesthetic learner prefers learning by hands on experiments or by doing things. Learning with a variety of ways is necessary and becomes more helpful. Preferred learning strategies Out of all multimodal strategies, aural learning helps me more. I enjoy being in a class, asking questions to the teacher, discussing and debating on topics with my colleagues, accepting and sharing ideas to and from one another. Tape recorder is an asset to aural learners. Listening to interesting examples, jokes and stories helps to remember better. Taking notes......

Vark Learning Style Assessment

...VARK Learning Style Assessment Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V The VARK learning style assessment is a questionnaire that was designed by Neil Flemming in 1987. It provides those who take it with a profile of their learning style(s). There are four scores that can give a person up to five study strategies: multimodal, visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic (Flemming, 2010). The way these scores add up tells a person where they fall within five areas, with multimodal being the most common at about 60% of the population (Flemming, 2010). Whatever learning style a person has, the preferences show how they take in and give out information. This paper will discuss in large part multimodal as the author has taken the VARK questionnaire and tested as such. Multimodal is the most common of the five learning styles, but it is also the most varied (Flemming, 2010). People will not necessarily have the same levels of each learning preference. One could have a very strong score in aural and read/write, but a low one in the last two. They could also have three strong scores and then one weak one. There are even some people who have scores that are even across the board. Based on that, people who are multimodal must then study more than one area to strengthen their preferences. If one is strong in read/write and kinesthetic, then that person would obviously want follow study examples that pertain to reading/writing and kinesthetic: making lists etc. and......
