A Passage to India

...English Mr. Fritz 8th period A Passage to India Julia Penelope, a linguist once said, “Language forces us to perceive the world as man presents it to us.”  For humans to try and understand what is going on in the world, and communicate; we created language. But there is a flaw in language. Language describes the world in a way that is restricting by the words we give it. Not all things can be described and interpreted in the exact manner they are supposed to be. Many things cannot be described and are beyond language, leaving no words to properly explain some events. In order to talk to someone and communicate thoughts, language is needed, which can be restricted by words. Two different cultures see the world by the language they know. Language restricts us to only words, which might have limited meaning, and may diminish the meaning of people’s thoughts. People can also choose the wrong words to describe their situation, and miscommunications arise. Miscommunications are bound to happen with any language. Not everyone understands the full breath of their language and even if they do, there are things beyond words that are indescribable. Language can create obstacles, even obscure a person’s thoughts and desires. Language makes us feel better because we can put words to something. Not being able to put words to something makes us feel incomplete. Not all meaning can be put to words, and not all language is meaningful. In A Passage to India the characters are restricted by...

...SUMMARY: ADELA (early 20’s) arrives in the Indian city of Chandrapore in the company of MRS MOORE, her fiancé RONNY’s elderly mother. Ronny, who is the City Magistrate and a prominent member of the tradition-bound British community, looks askance at the enthusiastic Adela’s curiosity about the local customs and people. She and Mrs Moore make friends with DR AZIZ, a handsome widower, and FIELDING, the outspoken principal of the British college. Aziz invites his new friends on a picnic expedition to view the famous Marabar caves in the hills outside the city. He goes to extravagant lengths to impress them, including the hiring of an elephant, but the day ends in chaos when Adela claims to have been assaulted in one of the caves by Dr Aziz. She is rushed back to Chandrapore as Aziz is arrested and thrown into jail to await trial. Certain that his friend is innocent, Fielding joins Aziz’s friends in an attempt to exonerate him but they are met with resistance at every turn by the irate British community, who close ranks around Adela. A strong case is built against Aziz and his defence becomes a rallying point for the burgeoning Independence Movement. Mrs Moore, who wants no part of the proceedings, leaves the city and dies in her railway carriage. With the future of the British Raj at stake, all eyes are on Chandrapore as the trial opens. As Adela is being led through the specifics of the fateful day, she backs down and refuses to name Aziz as her assailant, claiming that he is...

Mtv's Passage to India Case Study

...Module 1 ~ Critical Thinking “MTV’s Passage to India” is a case study that concentrates on an American based corporation in MTV that moves into India to reduce costs and expand their product into the global market. There are other “giants” in the media industry that are mentioned that have made the same transition all with the same goal as MTV, to create an economy of scale and have their costs fall and their output increase. Even though the goal, if achieved, would be an advantage in the media market, there are some disadvantages to making this transition and there are challenges as well. Taking a foreign assignment in a global economy, would be a new challenge that would be bring about conflict if it were not approached and handled in the correct way. Furthermore, a foreign assignment would become a harder situation if an ethnocentric attitude were to be present by the person being assigned. Taking a foreign assignment in a global economy would require patience, innovation, assimilation, understanding, apathy, and a true understanding of the culture and the people that reside in the country that the assignment is in. Being successful requires promoting products and services that are of interest in that particular country and are in demand in that particular economy. There are cultural values and differences that have to be understood to truly understand what would be of valuable that a company could offer in a foreign country. This learning and understanding would require...

Classic Books

...hat precisely makes a story classic ? The vast majority depict a story to be exemplary when it has stood the test of time. In my perspective , I believe a story is a classic when it practice a particular influence on people, or when it serve as a standard for writing and it is to be looked upon as of the highest class over time. In this paper, I would focus on what part of Orwell's exposition Shooting an Elephant makes it a work of art. Moreover, I would introduce one book related novel called A Passage to India by E.M Forster and a musical composition by Bob Dylan entitled Rolling Stone. which I would be contending on why these authors and artist works are worthy of being consider classic and on the off chance that they can be considered similarly great. George Orwell is best prominent for his last two books, the anti-powerful, controlling government works Animal Farm and 1984. He was an exceptionally adroit and experienced writer . Among his most puissant essays is the 1931 self- portraying essay Shooting an Elephant, which Orwell reflects on his experience as a police officer in pioneer Burma. Shooting an Elephant can be identified as one of the most classical essays in the English language. It is an extraordinarily composed article and a dynamite for a topic of portrayal. Throughout the essay, Orwell develops his proposition on the impacts of colonialism on the general population who are abused as well on the general population abuse individuals, also. The...

Distinguishing Republics and Kingdoms in Ancient India

...The state is defined as a political organism, which unites and co-ordinates social forces according to precise rules. There were two types of states prevailing in ancient India. Kingdom or monarchies enjoyed immense popularity and were the most prevalent form of government in ancient India. They are defined as a state having a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in one individual, who is the head of the state, the king. A republic on the other hand is referred to as state in which the supreme power rests in the people and their representatives or officers, as opposed to one governed by a king or similar ruler; a commonwealth. Although while classifying a system as republic, we must keep in mind that a republic need not always be democratic as was the case in ancient India where power vested not in the whole body of citizens but in a small aristocratic class. Thus Sparta, Athence, Rome, Medieval Venice have all been described as republics though none of them possessed that full democratic character which is now considered the distinguishing feature of a republic. Speculation regarding the origin of kingship occurs in the Vedic literature. Aitareya Brahmana refers to war between the devas(gods) and danavas(demons) in which gods were repeatedly defeated. The gods then realized the reason for their defeat was the absence of a leader to lead them while their counterparts had one, the king. They decided to try this experiment, elected a king in either Indra...

Male Relationships in Be

...difficult, and often risky, to develop. In order to maintain unity and authority, British men identified with one another and supported the discrimination of colonized men. Exceptions to this social routine are evident with characters from Mangal Pandey: The Rising, A Passage to India, and My Beautiful Laundrette. In Mangal Pandey, Pandey and Officer Gordon develop a unique relationship that is often tested by the lack of respect for Indian customs by the British. A Passage to India shows the relationship between Dr. Aziz and Mr. Fielding, which demonstrates the complications of maintaining English identity without succumbing to the exploitation of Indians. A homosexual relationship between Omar and Johnny during the Thatcher Era in Britain is shown in My Beautiful Laundrette. Although the first two films are set in colonized India, they both draw parallels to the difficulties of having a biracial male relationship during post-colonial England. My Beautiful Laundrette also uses the most fascinating cinematic craft to portray male bonding by using unique camera angles and shots in combination with a relevant soundtrack. Based on historical events, Mangal Pandey encompasses a pivotal period for British presence in India. It is vital to understand the strategy of the British in order to analyze a relationship between a British officer and an Indian male. The British acknowledged that they were outnumbered by Indians and used sepoys, or Indian men under British military authority,...

Comparing and Contrasting Two Cultures

...way or the other. According to Crapo (2013), a careful study of these cultures reveals that although there are some fundamental differences in the practices, sometimes it is common to find some similarities. In this study, I will focus on comparing the rites of passage between two communities in different countries. Each culture has its own rites of passage and its unique ways of celebrating such events. Some of these practices may have been restructured due to globalization and modernization that is turning the world into a global village. However, many communities still maintain their traditional heritage, preferring to continue with these practices despite the changes brought about by globalization. In this study, I will compare and contrast the cultural rites of passage among the Egyptians and that of the Hindus. I will be confirming even although these two cultures differ in their rites of passage practices, they also share a number of cultural values. Hindus have been able to maintain their cultural practices despite the changes that are taking place in the global world. Although they have embraced modernization, they have been able to maintain most of their cultural practices not only in their home country in India, but also in various other parts of the world where they live (Rinehart, 2004). On the other hand, the Egyptians have maintained their heritage within their country. Most of the Egyptians that travel to other countries, especially the West, are always easily converted...

...without a joint’. This line conveys to the reader the boat and crews current location, it being the Thames, but also where they are going. This is stated by the words ‘The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway’, telling the reader that they are using it as a waterway, a passage to the sea, and then ocean. This is further conveyed by the fact Conrad writes “the seas and sky were welded together without a joint’. When you see the sea and sky appear to join together, it means you are looking into the horizon. Often, people look into the horizon on the start of a long journey, in anticipation of the new experiences they are going to face, so this line could indicate his excitement he now holds, because of what he will see. Secondly, throughout this opening passage, there is a constant theme of exploration. Firstly, the sheer fact they are on a ‘cruising yawl’ indicates that they are going to explore foreign lands, as ships were the form of travel of choice in that time, especially as planes were not really operational, so the most convenient way to cross the seas would have been a ship. Later on in the passage, Joseph Conrad writes ‘The tidal current runs to and fro in its unceasing service, crowded with memories of men and ships it had borne to the rest or to the battles of the sea.
