A Peak in My Life

It was the summer after I turned fifteen. I had never been away from home for this long. It was a three week adventure that I begged to go on. I consumed myself by planning the trip for months. It was going to be the greatest experience of my life. The trip took place in Washington, and included hiking, rafting, canoeing, and, mountain climbing. The three weeks had all been leading up to summiting Mount Saint Helen. The mountain looked beautiful; however, it is also an active volcano. The scenery is absolutely stunning during the day. There were snow covered peaks, and tons of trees. The views took your breath away. At night however it became a big scary mountain in the middle of nowhere. Mount Saint Helens is a vast place that never seems to end. My group and I made it to the base camp that fateful night to set up our site before the big hike the next morning. In contrast to the big mountain, what seemed to be very tiny, tents surrounded the bottom of the peak. We hiked all day, so by the time we got there we had exhausted all of our reserves. The 15 teenagers were mostly inexperienced hikers, but even our counselors who had more skill were worn out from the day. After we set up the tents everyone situated themselves around the fire pit relaxing. At that point the 20 of us were all dirty; we probably smelled horrible. None of us had had a good shower in weeks. There remained a certain camaraderie between us because of this. The whole group felt like we weathered this together. Even with this feeling of togetherness I still was sitting off to the side, not talking too much. Since I am a shy person to begin with, I made some friends, but even that took me almost all of the three weeks to do. A number of people came with a friend which made it harder, and I still did not really feel like I truly fit in. All of the counselors had finished their daily meeting and were now sitting around the fire with us. Noticeably absent was Adam. We didn't really think about it. Suddenly, a number of ambulances started showing up. They began setting up their own stark white tent. A buzz occurred amongst us.
“What’s going on?”
“I wonder if somebody has gotten sick?”
“Is everything okay?” Finally the counselors sat us down as a group. They explained to us that Adam came down with a serious disease.
“He has acquired tuberculosis.” To me tuberculosis seemed like an olden day disease. I knew that as a part of regular check-ups, the tuberculosis test was given, but I thought to myself; “Did people still really get it?” Apparently so. We learned that Adam had been traveling in Africa. This is where he more than likely picked it up. This was the moment when we realized why the ambulances showed up. All of us needed to get tested. I became a little worried because I know that I have had allergic reactions to the skin test in the past. I did not want to deal with having a positive reaction this time around. The nurses and counselors then made a line to the mobile emergency room tent to administer the tests. My fellow adventurers seemed to be a bit panicked. Most of us were around fifteen though, so no one had enough knowledge to be fully aware. I was more scared then the others. I did not let anyone know this because I wanted to be just like everyone else. I held in most of my fears so I could fit in. Even though I am not an assertive person, I knew it was pertinent to tell someone about my situation. I had great fears of not being able to come home because I knew I would test positive. Normally, people who have tuberculosis are quarantined. They are unable to fly anywhere because of this. I got up all the nerve within me and talked to a nurse. I of course did this on the sly so no one would notice me or something being wrong. Once I got the nurse away from the group, I explained my situation. They grabbed a counselor. The nurse told them to phone my parents to confirm my story, and explain the situation. After the phone call the nurse and Katie came to find me. They debriefed me on their conversation with my mother.
“Mrs. deVuono? This is Katie from Adventure Treks.”
“Yes, can I help you? Has something happened?”
“I am calling to let you know that an incident at your daughter’s campsite has unfolded, one of the counselors has tuberculosis.”
“Oh my god. Is he ok? (Long pause and a sudden moment of revelation.) I am assuming you will need to test everyone. You must know Lucy has had allergic reactions to the TB test in the past. It may come up positive.”
“She has told us that, and we wanted to confirm with you. It is important that she is tested regardless, but I am sure she will be fine. As for the counselor, he will be under quarantine. There is no reason for us to believe that he will not be okay.”
“That is so good to hear, but the quarantine worries me. If Lucy’s test does come up positive, will she be able to fly home?”
“If that is the case, since she has had a history of allergic reactions, she will need to be tested again within the first few days of her arrival home. Do not worry though, she will be fine to fly.”
“Thank you so much, please keep me updated.” I learned the full conversation when I got home because my mother has vivid memories of this horrifying phone call. They then ushered me into the tent where they gave me the tuberculosis skin test. My arm almost immediately swelled up. It turned bright red. This made it even harder for me to be around my fellow campers. I became very worried about how others would see me now. It turned out though that they everyone happened to be extremely accepting, and hopeful that I would be okay. In another few days I managed to get on the plane home. I met with my doctor as soon as I landed. I was re-tested. Of course it came up positive. I then went to the hospital to get a chest x-ray to make sure that my lungs had no signs of the disease. After I passed that, the doctors put me on a round of medications for nine months. I remember being so excited to go on this outdoor adventure. I had no idea what an adventure it would be. I ended up conquering more than I ever knew I would. I learned that I could be more assertive than I ever knew. I left as a shy kid that could never stick up for myself, but, I came back as a strong advocate.

Maslow

...Maslow’s concept of peak experiences in daily life. Description In this reflective journal I am going to describe and evaluate concept of “peak experiences” which was developed by Maslow. According to Maslow (1971), peak experience is an unexpected feeling of extreme joy, prosperity, loss of fear and euphoria. Peak experience is an essential part of our life that leads us to a meaningful and satisfying life. Such events can happen anywhere and any time even during listening to music, cooking or doing sport activity (Maslow, 1962). As for me, in this journal I will share one of my daily activities that can be described as a peak experience. Interpretation To begin with, there are three characteristics of peak experience: significance, fulfillment and spiritual (Privette, 2001). From my point of view, it is important to know each of the characteristics to understand what peak experience is and why it is important. First of all, significance means that peak experience allows people to see things differently, from new perspective and his personal awareness starts to increase (Maslow, 1970). That can lead to serious changes in person’s life. Secondly, by fulfillment it is understood that peak experiences always make positive emotions and help to achieve a certain goal. Finally, people sometimes can not sense the time and they feel disorientated due to connection with the world at once. This is spiritual kind of peak experience. For me, the significant experience was when...

I Got Mi

...I Got….Myocardial Infarction 1. My initial response was to laugh because it is not a diagnosis that I thought I would ever hear. I am very slender and athletic and my cholesterol levels are all well under control. I do know that to get to the point of an MI, means that I more than likely have arteries full of plaque which ultimately leads to a sudden and extended obstruction of blood supple to myocardial tissue. My brain is already spinning in curiosity of the severity of ischemia in my left ventricle. What is even more scary to me, as a woman, is the higher risk of silent ischemia in women. Silent ischemia doesn’t produce any symptoms when the heart experiences ischemic events. So I guess after the shock wears off, that is when the “oh shit” moment is about to happen. 2. Myocardial Infarction(MI) is also known as a heart attack. MI results when the flow of oxygen rich blood to a myocardium suddenly becomes blocked. If blood flow is not restored quickly, this results in cellular death by necrosis or apoptosis. Acute MI is an important form of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). MI can occur at any age, but the risk of frequency raises with age progression. It is estimated that MI causes more than 150,000 deaths annually in the US. The American male has a greater than 1 in 5 chance of sustaining an MI or fatal ischemic event before the age of 65. Females that are younger than 45 have a 6 fold lesser risk of MI than men of the same age, however after menopause the rate becomes...

Personal Health Plan

...Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park is one of many fourteen thousand-foot peaks in Colorado. This mountain is world known for its alpine climbing and technical rock climbing. My goal is to some day climb what is referred to as the Diamond. This route is 1500 feet straight up, and can take two days to climb. Physical conditioning as well as mental and spiritual condition is a big part of the climb. Physically I would need to hike to the base of the rock face, which is sixteen miles of up hill, and then proceed with the climb stopping at nightfall and sleeping on a ledge called Broadway. This is all done carrying a pack that weighs forty to fifty pounds. When the climb begins there is no protection except what my partner and I could carry in. Carefully placing each cam and proceeding to the top. This is an extreme mental game, because if my partner or I fall the only link between surviving and falling to the ground is a rope and the piece of protection placed. Spiritually, I have to be in touch with myself and know that what ever happens, it happens for a reason. Luck does not play a big part of climbing, skill and psychological abilities are the biggest assets on the rock. To start a health plan I feel there needs to be a goal. I have established this and now a date to start. First I need to stop smoking and start an exercise program that fits into my busy life style. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to show how I would train for the adventure I have...

Psychological Needs

...and acceptance, spontaneity, problem centering, autonomy, continued freshness of appreciation, and peak experiences. Maslow’s hierarchy explains how people are constantly motivated to realize their potential and better lives. Maslow’s concept is easy to understand once put into perspective. A homeless person that lives on abandoned scraps of food is more motivated to secure food and a warm place to live than to need to feel a sense of accomplishment or self-esteem. According to Don Gorman (“Maslow's hierarchy and social and emotional wellbeing,” 2010) Maslow’s concept suggests “that people are motivated by different needs that can be classified in a hierarchy with the lower level needs having to be fulfilled before the higher level needs can be” (“Maslow's hierarchy and social and emotional wellbeing,” 2010). In other words, as an individual is able to meet their more basic, low-level, needs their determination shifts to higher-level needs and, eventually, may reach self-actualization—a set of self-fulfillment needs. Maslow characterized a self-actualized person as someone who have realistic, accurate perceptions of themselves, spontaneous, open-minded and open in behavior—yet they conform to conventional societal behaviors where necessary, they focus on problems bigger than their own petty problems and focus on a larger purpose, are autonomous, enjoy the simple things in life, and generally have what he called...

Life Orientation Analysis

...Life Orientation: Analysis of results The research I conducted has ultimately disproved my hypothesis that female sexuality is not regarded equally to male sexuality as it is seen as taboo except in the case of conceiving a child whereas for males it is seen as a healthy part of growing up. The results show almost exactly equal responses to questions regardless of the gender in the scenario. In the written results it was seen that if a person believed in the existence and use of the word ‘slut’, they then all said that men can be ‘sluts.’ This furthers the idea that sexism in youth regarding the expression of sexual receptivity or interest, is no longer. Their opinions on the matter is equal for both sexes. Although in the true or false results...

Asthma

...According to the information in the Encarta encyclopedia, many Americans, besides me, have asthma and that number has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. “ More than 17 million Americans suffer from asthma, with nearly 5 million cases occurring in children under age 18. In the United States, asthma causes 5,500 deaths each year… Among all Americans, the prevalence of asthma increased more than 60 percent between 1982 and 1994.” (1) The management of asthma is a health issue for many people besides me. As a result of my research I have found that I can manage my asthma and live a full, active life by minimizing the effects of environmental factors that can trigger asthma episodes, following my physician’s instructions about medications and by sticking to an exercise program Numerous substances can trigger an asthma attack of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Allergens constitute the largest category of triggers (Abramowicz). According to Susan Berg, “Allergens are substances that produce an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to them.” Common allergens are pollens from plants, animal dander, dust mites, mold and mildew (23). Dr. Anders said we would do a series of skin tests for allergies right away. If I am allergic to certain triggers, allergy shots will help by desensitizing me to them, making them less likely to trigger an episode (Anders). If I am allergic to certain pollens, I can reduce the chances of an asthma episode by...

Money Management

...“Well, Annie, it looks like you have asthma,” our family physician informed me. I could not believe what I was hearing. I thought that I had been suffering from a very stubborn cold. Questions started going through my head as I listened to Dr. Davis explain my condition. I’m in high school. Aren’t I too old to get asthma now? How can I stay on the softball team? Will I still be able to go on camping and hiking trips with my family? I already knew that asthma is a chronic disease which affects the lungs and that certain medications help control the number and severity of asthma episodes. (That’s when the coughing and wheezing start.) I didn’t know much more than that. I needed to know more about what might trigger an asthma episode. Will I be able to keep up with other players on the softball team? Are there certain types of trees and plants that I should avoid? After much pleading and negotiating on my part, my parents had finally agreed that our family could have a dog. Will I be able to live with it? I made a list of the things I needed to know. From that list, I was able to form my research question: Can I effectively manage my asthma? Later, I was able to form an answer. The Story of My Search My search took about three weeks. I began my research by doing some background reading in the Encarta online encyclopedia. That site provided a definition of the term asthma, information on how the lungs function, the causes of asthma attacks, and the diagnosis...

...will include a detailed historic and extrapolated Stream Gauge Data Worksheet, as well as a graph of the Discharge Frequency Curve expected on Clearwater River. The report will provide Hazard city with my scientific analysis, conclusions, and provide recommendations concerning potential flood damages. METHOLODOGY The methodology used was to utilize the Recurrence Interval formula (R) = (N+1)/M, to determine the recurrence interval and magnitude of historical floods provided on the Stream Gauge Data of Peak Flood Discharges on Clearwater River in Hazard City. Also, I reviewed the flood insurance map to determine areas of floodplains and I utilized the topographic map of Hazard City to compare with the flood insurance map and to make my own conclusions regarding the geographical areas at most risk. Lastly, I used the discharge-frequency curve data and graph to determine the discharge of a 75-year flood in Hazard City. DATA STREAM GAUGE AND DISCHARGE FREQUENCY CURVE YEAR DISCHARGE M R The data from the Stream Gauge Worksheet helped to prepare the Discharge-Frequency Curve. The Stream Gauge Data worksheet was also useful in determining the magnitude as well as to conclude the recurrence interval of each Peak Flood Discharge. CONCLUSION My scientific assumption based on the data is that areas closest to the Palouse River and Clearwater River will have the most issues with overbank flow, or flooding (Keller, 2008, p. 264). L. T. Zander Personal Biography

Sarah is born in 1834 in the state of Florida to Daniel S. Griswold from Connecticut and Mary Anne Dunham from New York, according to 1870 and 1880 U.S. Federal Census record. The information in regards to where she spent her childhood is limited but, as evidence indicated on a Connecticut official town marriage record, her place of residence is registered as Hartford, which is now the capital city of Connecticut. On February 7, 1848, at an age of fourteen, Sarah marries to a man named Lycurgus T. Zander from New York City who is eighteen years older. Three year after her marriage, Sarah gives birth to her first child named Henry Zander in 1851 then, eight years after, she gives birth to her second child named William Zander in 1859. It is unclear when Lycurgus and Sarah moved to San Francisco from the east coast. It is, however, reasonable to believe they moved between 1851 and 1859 because, according to the 1870 Federal Census for San Francisco County,...

The American Dream

...The concept of American Dream in general can be described as a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S. It is a very vague concept as people tend to input their own perceptions. The American Dream can highly be related to my goals and aspirations. I try to name one personal who wouldn’t relate to the American Dream and I found none. But attaining that level of serenity and comfort is a challenge especially at this point of time. In relations to the context of the book “The Great Gatsby” and basing it upon the author’s emotion, this book portrays the 1920’s as an era of decayed social and moral values. The evidence was verified as a part of greed, empty pursuit of pleasure, and attaining the raging peck by overthrowing anyone that stands on the way. Whereas my professional goals and objective are the exact opposite from the context of this book. Yes, I too want to attain the highest possible peak in relations to my field, but I want to earn it being ethical towards my society and surroundings. The word “ethics”, means a lot to me, and upon the current economic and social standpoint, it is hard to afford ethics but we can. This World is a cruel place to live in but then again it’s a challenge for us young personal’s to modify and make this place livable.
