Music is something that I have been raised with since I have musicians as parents, and it’s also something in lives of everyone. Music is often taken for granted but it lends to our every day in simplistic ways. Music isn’t just something that orchestras perform, but found in movies, bird’s songs, even our rhythmic heartbeats. Life without music would be like life without the enhancement of colors: dull and monotonous.
I love music and it’s something I hope to make a career out of, music performance in particular. I’m often told by people that it’s a fantasy that can’t be reached being I play one the most competitive instruments. A teacher once said to me it’s impossible to be a successful musician and get good grades in school. Confidence is something I struggle with because of this challenge, but my love for music just makes me push myself harder.
Music is significant in my life for several reasons. First, it’s something I’ve grown up with. My parents have provided me with numerous musical opportunities even before I picked up an instrument. Whether it be my mom singing Beethoven’s 7th Symphony to me as a baby or the numerous concert I’ve been brought to, music has always been there. Right from when I picked up a flute for the first time I found it exciting and I was willing to accept any challenge so that one day I could “be like mommy.” Since then, music has built up my work ethic and perseverance through frustration and tears. I’ve made strong friendships with those who share music as a common interest with me. I’ve learned lessons that not only apply to music, but apply to life. Music is just a never ending cycle right from the start. As some things become clearer, other things become more ambiguous. This is something I’ve always found so intriguing and intellectually stimulating. Now I’ve come so far from…...

If I Had to Explain

...If I Had to Explain, You Wouldn’t Understand This is a picture of a recent weekend trip north of Traverse City, MI. my Fiancé and I, spent an entire day just riding. We rode up to a lighthouse, through Sleeping Bear Dunes, and all over some of America’s beautiful roads. Why I chose this photograph is because it reminded me of our recent reading by Allan Johnson, In The forest and the Trees, and Barry Glassner, The Culture of Fear. Johnson talked about symbols and value. “But most of what we value is what we learn to value through socialization in a particular system’s culture”(49). What he meant by this was that we value things we are taught to. Whether we are intentionally taught, even know we are learning values, or just absorbing them as we struggle through life. we are acquiring values. A person’s culture plays a huge significant role as to those values learned. I imagine there are quite a few cultures that would not understand the mentality of a biker. The meditation one gets from serene riding alone; no radio, no conversation, just open roads and thought. This is a culture that was learned as Johnson spoke of. The value one possesses was most likely a conscience choice of preference to things they were exposed to. Many cultures stereotype and fear the culture of a motorcyclist. Most motorcyclists that are not casual riders, but bikers, are not the criminals that America portrays them as. They may be obsessive about their machines, similar to a hot rod guy about his...

Why I Write

...MEDIUM Why do I write? First, I write because I have feelings that are sometimes well said when written. You see, I used to be that someone who is really not outspoken. I keep almost all my thoughts to myself that sometimes, when I get the chance to say it, It gets tangled up making it harder to express. I used to consider writing as my way of letting it all out. As if writing is my refuge. When I was in high school, every time I feel down, I write my emotions to my notebooks. Sometimes when I feel intensely sad, I grab any notebook near me and write on it. I even cry while I write. Nowadays, I no longer feel the same way and as I read through my “diaries”, I never would’ve realized how emotional I was during those days. I also use writing as a way to record my life because I love travelling down memory lane. I love taking time reading through my “diaries” and see myself during that exact time. Like when mom and I had a fight, I wrote with such strength that my pen ran through the paper like a knife. There are also times when I feel too happy that I write with the most beautiful hand writing I could ever produce. Such times tell me that I could be extreme. I would like to call those days as my transition period. The time when I hit rough waters just to get to whom I am now. From the past me who was too introverted to the present me who am a little less introverted and a little more outspoken. Writing really makes a big contribution to my growth. But, I seldom write......

Music Essay

...Sanders Music Appreciation Final Exam My comparison will go between two periods that was classic vs. romantic classical music composers were satisfied to stay and work within a definite boundary of what made up the acceptable music. In this era the chord resolutions were at all times the identical, and furthermore the connection between keys, sections, and movements, maintained proportion. On the other hand the Romantic composers extended these boundaries or rather limitations, and in place they brought in new chords, atypical key changes and in numerous ways went in opposition to the way they were made in the classical period Romantic period dealt with more emotions. Ludwig Van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 in C Minor which is my favorite piece from the classical period and Franz Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody which consisted of great story telling through the music. Exoticism influenced by some ethnic groups music groups from the late 19th-century. This means when different ethnic cultures start to make a dramatic influence on the primary music at this time which led to a major change in music. Nationalism is the fact that various types of political evolution were achieved in each country that in turn affected musical nationalism refers to the various national schools that consciously tried to separate themselves from the standards set in the Classical period. Trying to remove themselves from the boundaries of which classical music set transcending music itself by......

If I Had a Lot of Money

...When I was small, I often dreamt about being rich as my parents were quite poor. We had difficulty making ends meet each month. So, if I had a lot of money, I would certainly fulfill my dreams. First and foremost, I would buy a house for my parents, preferably a bungalow, in a quiet town. I would equip the house with the latest technology so that it would be a smart home. My mother would have a state-of-the-art kitchen as she loves cooking. I would also get a maid to help her with the household chores. I will ensure that my family is comfortably settled in this house. The second thing I would do is to go on a world tour with my parents. I have never been overseas but I long to see the places I have only read or dreamt about. First, I would like to visit Europe, especially Italy, the city of romance. I would visit all the museums and buildings I have heard so much about. My next stop would be Hong Kong or China. There is something mystical about China and her people. This would be my dream come true. Apart from that, I could finally go on a shopping spree, which is my favourite pastime. Thus far, I could only go window shopping and if I had a lot of money, I would go into these stores and buy whatever I fancy. Just imagine that for once in my life, I do not need to look at the prices of the items that I like. I could just shop till I literally drop. The salesgirls would be hovering near me with their latest outfits and my wish would be their command. Ah, I would not be......

How to Write a Compare &Contrast Essay

...How to Write a Compare/Contrast Essay Compare and contrast essays are the other big essay types in academic writing. These essays will follow a specific question and are fairly easy to complete. There are several ways to write this type of essay. The most important thing to remember is structure. Many wonderful essays fall victim to the woes of bad structure, making any ingenuity to fall by the wayside. Go over the rules on how to write a general essay, and then structure your compare/contrast essay in one of the following two formats: 1. Introduction 2. Your introduction — like the five-paragraph-essay, should open generally (with a quotation, anecdote, generalization), and lead into the thesis statement. 3. Topic 1 4. This next portion of your essay (which may consist of one paragraph or several) should cover only the first topic of the comparison and contrast. Compare/Contrast essays take two topics and illustrate how they are similar and dissimilar. Do not mention topic 2 in this first portion. 5. Topic 2 6. This next portion of your essay (which may also consist of one or more paragraphs) should cover the second of the two topics. Do not discuss Topic 1 in this section. Since you have already gone into great detail about it, you may allude to Topic 1 briefly; however, do not analyze Topic 1 in this section. This portion of the paper is to discuss Topic 2 in great detail. 7. Topics 1 and 2 Together 8. Now that you have analyzed both Topic 1 and Topic 2......

Essay If I Had Carlos Slim Money

... Group: 5 Course: 4 IBS-M, RANEPA Essay If you had Carlos Slim money, what kind of business would you buy and what kind of lifestyle would you lead? Carlos Slim is a Mexican billionaire and the world’s richest or second-richest man, with a fortune estimated to be in excess of $67bn. Aged 11, he began his commercial activity from investing in government saving bonds. Then he became a shareholder of Banco Nacional de Mexico, set up own investing company as a stockbroker participating is fire sale of assets during crisis which resulted in owning wide range of retail outlets and manufacturing businesses. He has recently seized control of telecommunication companies operating in all Latin America. Carlos Slim’s experience as a successful investor provides us with an example of overall business strategy that usually works out: investing in distressed assets during global recession that will recover fast during next phases of economic cycle. Therefore, if I had Mr. Slims money, I would partially follow his investing strategy. The most long-lasting financial and economic crisis in recent history has not passed yet, and that’s why taking advantage of global recession with perspectives for the future is the best strategy of employing capital. But there is one thing that I would change: the spheres and regions of investing. Being the richest person in Russia, I would invest only in Russian assets. The first part of capital, as I said previously, would be invested in......

Music Essay

...The Music Conservatory 2015-2016 Season On September 10th 2015 at 7:30 I attended the performance of Susan Nigros and Mark Lindeblad at Roosevelt University inside the Ganz Memorial Hall Auditorium. When I proceeded into the auditorium, I was given a program itinerary, which gave me an insight of both Mark Lindeblad and Susan Nigro’s musical background. Susan Nigro plays the contrabassoon, while Mark Lindeblad is an amazing pianist. Both Susan Nigro and Mark Lindeblad are from Chicago, they worked and played in various symphonies, both have earned degrees in music and have collaborated on music since 1990. While sitting in the auditorium minutes before the performance began; I noticed the architecture of the auditorium. The auditorium was not large, but not too small either. The auditorium can possibly accommodate 100 people comfortably. I would estimate that there were 30 people in the audience. In the auditorium there were wooden seats, wooden floors, and painted morals on the walls with wooden panel surrounding the walls. The ceilings were white and high with golden light fixtures. The stage was wooden, and on the wooden stage I saw there were black chairs, one piano bench, two big black grand pianos and four microphone of different sizes. At 7:30 exactly a woman dressed in all black came onto the stage, she welcomed the audience and informed the audience to silence phones, after her pleasant announcement the light went dim and the performance began. Three people......

Music Research Essay

...Music Therapy: Different Ways Music Can Help Heal People. When dealing with emotions, we all have ways to escape from the stresses of life. One of the most common ways of escaping from our stress is through music. Music can sometimes have a very calming and soothing quality to it. Other times music can inspire us and pump us up for certain situations in our lives. Music is also used as therapy for illnesses. Whether their illness is a psychological disorder or cancer, music has been proven to ease some of the symptoms that these people may have. People who are suffering from any kind of illness are under tremendous stress, confusion, and sometimes they can feel lost. Music therapy can help with all of these problems. Music has been used in medicine for thousands of years. Ancient Greek philosophers believed that music could heal both the body and the soul. Native Americans have used singing and chanting as part of their healing rituals for millennia. The more formal approach to music therapy began in World War II, when U.S. Veterans Administration hospitals began to use music to help treat soldiers suffering from shell shock and to help cope with the tragic events they witnessed during that time. In the remainder of this paper I will be discussing music therapy and the effects it can have on people that are suffering from an illness. Music therapy is becoming a very common practice around the world. In 1944, Michigan State University established the first music therapy...

The Letter I Shouldnt Write

...Dear Ex Future Husband, I think of you everyday. Many things remind me of you. The smell of sunscreen. Taking naps on my futon. Running down the street. The  strike of the clock at 8:00pm where you would call me every single night. Those are just a few of the million things that remind me of you. I cant say I hate it. I cant say I love it. Country music brings everything back into place because country makes everyone think about love.....or drunkiness. I first wanted to write you a letter.  A letter full of hate. Full of anger. Full of regret. I didn't though because thats not what I see now. Thats not what I feel now. I haven't talked to you in over 3 months. Seems like a short time when you date someone for 5 years on and off. Sometimes I still feel my racing heart. I remember when I fell in love with you for the first time. It was a hot summer day. We were both baking in the sun. Laying lazily on our kayaks. I had kayak 5. You had the blue one. Our hands drifted next to each other. Even if it was the slightest touch, I saw myself marrying you that day. Having kids. Growing old. Now I cant even remember the sound of your voice. I wish you hadn't of run away. Being over 1000 miles away is hard for anyone. I wish you would have waited just one more day because that one more day might have been different. I wish I hadn't yelled at you so much to get a job. I was only trying to make you the best person you could be even though you were already being him. I wanted the sky for......
