Keywords: Conflict, Peer Relationships, Conflict Resolution Style, Group dynamics, Interdepartmental Relations, Management communication, Candor, Teams CHATTANOOGA CASE ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT 2 Charles Moore’s conflict resolution style, indecisiveness, and management of group dynamics drove his business unit to near failure. Chattanooga Ice Cream

...decline in sales for 5 consecutive years. The Division is headed by Charles Moore. Although Charles Moore was successful in leading teams he seemed to have major issues with this team of vice presidents. According to the Harvard Business Review Chattanooga Ice Cream Case the team was very dysfunctional; they exhibited a lack of trust, high in conflict, disrespectful of each other and exhibited avoidance issues with accountability. Team members seemed to always lay blame to other member. Moore needs to be more assertive in dismissing the ways of the past and the loss of Stay & Shop business needs to be put aside. Moore needs to give clear direction and assign responsibilities to each team member. Moore needs to convey that team cohesiveness is a must and this will go a long way to help ensure no further loss of business. This paper will examine how Moore’s leadership approach contributed to the teams’ dysfunction, discuss what the group of employees themselves could do to better understand the perspectives of each other and their boss as well as make recommendations about Moore should do now to help his team work together and manage conflicts more effectively.  Charlie’s Leadership Style In assessing where Charlie Moore goes wrong, it’s important to look at his leadership style. According to the DiSC style, Charlie is a “Steady (S) Leader.” Specifically, this means Charlie operates at a methodical pace and likes leading in an orderly environment. He may readily view...

Leadership Is More Than Interpersonal Skills

...acknowledged in accordance with the University's Regulations regarding Cheating and Plagiarism. 000847905 Fariha Rahman Tutor's comments Grade For Office Use Only__________ Awarded___________ Moderation required: yes/no Tutor______________________ Final Grade_________ Date _______________ The Importance of Interpersonal Leadership Introduction There have been several researches on how an individual leader can improve the skills on managing and guiding the members or employees to reach a desired goal. Building and maintaining relationships with employees or members in a team is what researchers tend to focus on more. There are reviews on psychological research on leaderships and they have been conducted for many years. Examples show that leadership is an independent variable (e.g. Bass, 1990; Rost, 1991; Yukl, 1989). This essay will talk about the importance of interpersonal leadership. But more importantly, this essay will discuss the possible arguments some authors and researches have put forward against interpersonal leadership and also how despite all the arguments, the weight of interpersonal leadership is much heavier. This essay will explore all the possibilities of having an interpersonal approach to leadership and also the criticisms. First, I will discuss about empirical evidence of interpersonal leadership followed by the criticisms. After which I will put forward my...

The Role of Leadership in Shaping Organizational Culture

...shaping a healthy organizational climate has many facets. Both leadership and organizational culture are difficult concepts to define, as many researchers have chosen to define each in various ways. For the purposes of this paper, I examine leadership as a process that guides both leaders and followers to a common goal, that being a shared culture that binds the members together in a healthy and productive climate. I present several leadership factors that play an important role in shaping a healthy organizational culture. The Role of Leadership in Shaping Organizational Culture One of the most critical roles of a leader is to create and maintain a healthy culture in his or her organization. This needs to happen at all levels of an organization, so the responsibility rests with all levels of leadership, from the most senior executives down to the first line supervisor. Culture represents the organization’s personality and has a critical influence on both employee satisfaction and organizational success. While every organization has a culture, it is often misunderstood by the members of the organization due to various interpretations between departments or divisions, both laterally and hierarchically. While some variation may be necessary to meet business demands in larger organizations, it is important for all organizations, both large and small, to have an overarching culture that is ingrained and functioning throughout the entire organization. Leaders must understand...

Team Leadership Busi 310

...Team Leadership Liberty University BUSINESS 310 Abstract The focus of this paper is on the topic of team leadership. Team leadership is a successful leadership style to use in any organization to be more focused and accomplish more. The next few pages addresses several attributes that can make this style of leadership successful or unsuccessful. Leadership is an important topic in todays world as many search to follow a great leader, we study to be great leaders and many strive to write what defines a great leader. The book stores are always filled with current leadership books and just one search on the internet you will find hundreds of opinions on current leadership strategies and styles. What does leadership need to look like in 2012? Leadership is going to have to be bigger than one person. “Scholars suggested that the shared leadership approach potentially provides a more suitable solution to team management than the classical, hierarchical, or vertical leadership, as represented by the solo leader approach” (Day et al., 2006; Gronn, 2000, 2002; Hoch, 2007). The definition of team leadership does not need to get lost some complex translation. Team leadership can be seen simply on the basketball court. On the court you can see 5 different size men, different talents, different abilities but all are focused on one thing. Each player is contributing their part in different ways. At the end...

...Motivational Plan for Team C Virginia Allen LDR/531 April 27, 2015 Franz Gottleib Motivational Plan for Team C Devising a motivational plan requires several elements to increase motivation, satisfaction, and performance of a sales team. The plan is based on individual values to be effective. Second, managers have to apply extrinsic motivators to affect their intrinsic motivators. The following describes a motivation plan for cautious and dominate type personalities based on the DiSC Assessment and the position of territory managers for DermaTran Health Solutions for members of Learning Team C. Territory Manager Position Description “DermaTran Health Solutions is a group of compounding pharmacies that specialize in the compounding topical pain creams based on a prescription from a physician” (DermTran Health Solutions Compounding Pharmacies, 2015). Developing High Impact Teams

...done through projects involving teams across all levels as they offer greater flexibility, better outcomes and better innovation than individuals. As such, teams permeate all levels in local, national and global organizations. Such a design means that people often have membership in multiple teams resulting in outcomes that are frequently suboptimal and fraught with frustration and inefficiencies. The demand for increased teamwork has created a need for a way to help teams succeed yet most training programs do not take into account the full experience of team life in development efforts. In this entry the authors propose a conceptual framework to develop High Impact Teams. A High Impact Team is one that is: 1. Aware and has the ability to align actual and desired interaction (quality of team interaction); and 2. Has the knowledge and ability to harness the innovative and executional capacities of their team within its embedded organizational or educational contexts. This entry posits that meaningful team development programs must incorporate assessments of both the quality of a team’s interaction (function) and its capacity to innovate and execute (performance). The authors provide a structured methodology involving measures of interaction and capacities together with engaging in well-developed team coaching process so that teams will be able to develop and become high impact teams. Team Life in Organizations and Educational Settings A recent study reported in the Gallup Business...

Nurse retention and recruitment are the top issues that all health organizations are facing in nowadays. They most effectively develop strategies not only to recruit nurses, but to retain experienced and knowledgeable bedside nurses who will deliver an excellent care. Practical retention plans and strategies are crucial to the financial and quality outcomes of an organization (Golden, 2008) Factors that are contributing and affecting nurse retention and consequently causing workforce disruption are related to high turnover, aging workforce, and job dissatisfaction. Literature Review Turnover is costly to an organization, creating significant financial burdens and affecting morale and clinical quality (Golden, 2008). Although the full impact of staff nurse turnover on hospital costs has not been assessed, costs associated with recruitment and hiring, personnel processing and training of new nurses are known to significantly increase as result of high turnover (Weisman, Alexander&Chase, 1981). Polarity Skills Project: Polarity Paper

...both/and perspective to the either/or viewpoint” (Catalyst Training, 2013). It appears to try to take advantage of gleaning the best from opposing viewpoints when it comes to dilemmas, contradictions, or polarities.   Most complex problems don’t have a specific solution. Thus, the task of becoming an effective leader is dependent upon one’s ability to recognize and then manage those complex problems. Polarity management has the ability to present a unique set of principles that will test anyone to view a situation in a new light, especially when you’re dealing with a team, whether virtual or standard. “These situations are not problems to solve; they are polarities which require effective management. Leaders, teams, and organizations become more effective as they learn to distinguish between the two and deal productively with both” (Johnson 2006).  To be an effective leader of a team or an organization, management has to be able to manage unavoidable and unsolvable circumstances on a continual basis. So, the question becomes not if you can manage a problem, but how well do you manage problems?   Which brings me to the issue of how well can we work in virtual teams when polarities are inevitable? In my current Marketplace Business Fundamentals simulation exercise polarity management is something that has both benefits and drawbacks. One area of...

Nsw Values

...NSW Health Values Introduction Values are important in any organization. Values give an organization credibility in the eyes of its clients. Promotion of ethical values is a role of every stakeholder of the organization. At New South Wales (NSW) Health and private employers ensure promotion of value through adherence to their value statements. This reflection portfolio evaluates the said values assuming that one works within that organization. In order to perform this reflection, one has to make sure that personal values are not compromised by the employer. Compromise may hinder independent comparison of one’s personal values and those of NSW Health. This work will analyze the influence of these values on health teams and demonstrate how NSW Health leaders may use these values to impact effectively on patient’s healthcare. An independent evaluator needs to follow the criteria that ensure professional practice. I adopted my values in a collage characterized by strong family bondage and commitment, sharing, love, happiness and family pets. This collage values happiness, wealth and family bondage than other matters in life. I express my vision for a happy family, values and goals to measure progress. My vision aims to ensure family safety, health and togetherness. In order to have a happy family, one must attend to all their needs including shelter and food. One also has to try and be the best father or mother and thus promote common family values that ensure commitment...

How to Foster Creativity in Decision Making

...HOW TO FOSTER CREATIVITY IN DECISION MAKING Abstract Creativity is the most critical and important factor for all organizations to take advantage of in order to survive during these challenging times (Kanter, 1983; Tushman and O'Reilly, 1997; Utterback, 1994). Ongoing uncertainties of both the economic and global financial markets, indirectly forces almost all successful companies to adopt a new corporate business model largely based on using individual creativity to facilitate and enhance organizational innovation. In order to build and sustain an effective organizational culture conquered by creativity and innovation, organizations must effectively identify to maximize all creative wealth of their members, develop creative leaders and management teams and provide a kind of work environment that is highly supportive of creative expression. The focus on this paper is to examine the ways to foster creativity in decision-making since it can easily be seen and understood that fostering creativity is not an easy task as there are no easy formulas to make creativity happen. Introduction Creativity is significant in management research (Shalley et al., 2004) and it is well defined as the production of novel ideas, which are not only unique but also useful. They are deemed to be useful when “they have potential for direct or indirect value to the organization, either in the short or long-term” (Shalley et al., 2004). Ideas can always be generated by anyone, and are either...
