A Review of " Did the Players Give Up Money to Make the NBA Better? Exploring the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement in the National Basketball Association" It's a long but clear title; and I use two whole lines to write it. I'm a basketball fan. When I planned to find a prime resource to read and write about it, I'm aware of some researches or business events involving my interest and business, so I chose this article. After reading the whole essay, I felt perplexed because it wasn't a general primary research that I could recognize at once and the author used some data from sports association. Finally, I thought it's available deliberately. I have two sample reasons: one is that the author collects the valuable data; the other is that the author analyze and flow the idea to the conclusion.
Statement of the Problem What is the implied research question in this study? The answer is obvious. Just like the title, this research is to talk about effects of the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement in the National Basketball Association. As we knows, because of the new bargaining agreement, players will earn less money that before, and make contribution to the league, but people doesn't it affect or not. This research gives the author's analysis.
Review of Related Literature The author, David J. Berri, is a professor of economics in the Department of Economics and Finance; and his current main research topics are the economics of sports. At the beginning of this research, the author gives some background of strikes and lockouts in professional North American sports. Besides NBA, Major League Baseball(MLB), National Football League(NFL) and National Hockey League(NHL) also had several times labor disputes in the past three decades. And then he talks about the financial origins of the 2011 labor dispute. Based on the old agreement, the NBA league lost money in every year from 2005 to 2011.The owners claim it's not fair enough. The owners win; and the money will be transfer from the players to the owners. At this part, the author explains that it's hard to find evidence such as a luxury tax, salary cap, or a payroll cap to impact competitive balance. After describing the basic details of the new agreement. The author starts to analyze the league's goal of the new agreement that is to narrow the gap between large and small market teams. By using some data and example of LeBron James, the author perorate that the new argument is able to transfer additional revenue money from large-market to small-market teams, but it won't prevent stars from being willing to play in larger markets. Less salary may lead players get "a free pass" for too long.
Method
The data in this research is not from author's questionnaire, but maybe from the sports associations. These kinds of data are vast and various. How can they help for this article? This is the author's work. When the author talks about labor disputes in North American Sports in the past three decades, he makes a table and show the exact year, event and games lost for each strike or lockout. It's a visual way to let me realize they have become commonplace. When the author says that the new argument may be not as good as thought. It's hard to prove because there's less evidence such as a luxury tax, salary cap. The author uses Actual Salary vs. Expected Salary in Wins Produced to show that sometimes the value of a players doesn't fit his salary. And then I find the play who should have high expected salary but has low salary in fact is from small-market team. These numbers are objective and I start to think that maybe the new argument won't solve the promblem.
Analysis and Results As showing the data of Expected Salary in Wins Produced, the author start to analyze why the league's new argument is not effective. In my opinion, in his analysis, the most successful strategy is to make an example relating to data on display. Like Lebron, he started his career in the Cleveland from 2003-04 season. During this time, he and the team became successful. But in the summer of 2010, although the Cleveland could give him more money, he signed with the Miami Heat. This case explains that the gap between large-market teams and small-market teams is not just about money, so the league's hope isn't achieved. Finally, the author explains that the new argument can work as well as the league hope.
Summary, Conclusions, Recommendations In conclusion, this research is a professional and concise study paper. I like his title. The author use lots of tables and examples to help him explain some advanced information. He uses quantitative evidences to show objectively; and then based on the data, analyze and figure out qualitative results.

...Running head: PROS AND CONS Pros and Cons of Compensation for NCAA Division I Student Athletes Mark Dunkley PEP 461 Student The College at Brockport Abstract This paper weighs in the pros and cons for the compensation of Division I college student athletes. This paper also introduces a plan that would allow monetary compensation of college athletes in the United States. A survey was distributed to 14 males of the Suny College at Brockport basketball team Pros and Cons of Compensation for NCAA Division I Student Athletes The exploits of student-athletes in sports have variously been advanced as generating a lot of dollars in forms of revenues for their respective institutions, which has generally raised the question as to why they shouldn’t be compensated for their sporting prowess. Student-athletes generate tens of millions of dollars for their respective athletic departments and ideally then should be reimbursed. However, as per the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletics Associations (NCAA), athletes are not supposed to receive any commercial use of their personas and likenesses and are indeed not expected to gain any monetary compensation for their sporting engagements. This has generally been interpreted to mean that they cannot enter into agreements for endorsements in their sporting activities as has been the case with professional engagements. Instead, students are expected to benefit from the payment for tuition fees from their sporting activities...

...not be transgressions in the athletic arena as they are all human, but even this can serve as a valuable lesson to young fans.  Charles Barkley is correct when he says in the Nike commercial that "parents should be the most important role model for kids" and no one expects a sports figure to replace that position, but it also takes a village to raise good citizens.  Everyone that occupies attention in a child's life should realize that their actions will be seen and will affect the child's perspective of the world. Sadly, sometimes the lesson learned is to avoid the bad behavior that defamed an athlete who previously was admired.  Life itself is a responsibility and if we continue to make lame excuses for bad behavior, as you did in this editorial, we not only disappoint those around us, we will end up with a society that has little regard for the well being of its...

Sports Ethics

...Todd Gillispie Prof. MacAdams 8/23/10 Sports Ethics: How Technology Alters the Balance of Fairness Over the years sports have made great strides in improving fairness so as to create a more competitive form of entertainment. In the early years before the advancements in technology and development of enhancement drugs, it was talent that set athletes apart from one another. But as the number of athletes rose and the revenue generated by sports, as well as the salaries of players, escalated exponentially, so did the need to excell. Accordingly, athletes looked for anything that would give them an edge. Sports enhancers were used to obtain a competitive advantage, thus disrupting the concept of fairness. The problem of fairness did not only lie in the use of enhancers, but also with play calling. In most sports you have an official or team of officials who are solely responsible for ensuring all calls are made correctly. Because of “human error”, as well as the possibility of biased officiating, the idea evolved of using camera systems whose sole duty is to record all plays that can be replayed to ensure that calls were correctly made. In this paper I will analyze two forms of technology – one from a pure technology perspective and one from a medical perspective - that have both positive and negative aspects in tipping the scale of fairness. For most sports, the sole purpose of a video replay system is to determine the correctness of close calls or...

Not just market leader & challenger but all players in the industry were playing with keen interest because of the size of this industry in India. The Indian DTH Market is projected to become the world’s largest DTH Market in 2012 itself. The regulations that necessitate digitization of television content & signals will also drive the sale of this product in the time to come. The advantage over cable & satellite service providers that it gives, rural & remote transmission because of wireless service, technological advances like electronic program guide that it provides makes it an enticing product for consumers. In race to acquire maximum customers companies have been fiercely fighting on the price point as well. Doordarshan’s DD Direct Plus with a conglomeration of free to air channels only plays at a different level for rural masses & economy seekers. The competition in the mainstream is mainly between the Dish TV & Tata Sky, with Airtel Digital TV, Reliance Big TV, Videocon D2H & Sun Direct Plus playing on a different platter. It becomes very interesting to see how these players fight it out between themselves on different fronts of positioning & differentiation; when the core offering of bouquets & prices are almost the same everywhere. Research on Challenges Facing Sport in the Country Still Doing Litereature Review.

...represents approximately 2% of GDP. For developing economies, though, the challenge remains making sport a factor of economic development, and a driver for social change, so it benefits all citizens in the long term. UNESCO's 1978 International Charter of Physical Education and Sport classified sport as "a fundamental right for all." But the low place sport occupies in the developing world's priorities shows that its importance as an educational and social tool is not yet universal. Everyone agrees that sport contributes to economic development by creating jobs and stimulating business activity. The organization of a major sporting event, for example, is a great opportunity for the local economy. The thousands of people who attend will spend money on food, lodging, transportation and other, related tourist activities. However, in recent years, we see these economic benefits are obvious only the short term. If we take the example of South Africa in 2010, the positive impact of the World Cup was, in terms of job creation and reduced crime, only temporary and fell far short of pre-tournament projections. For example, the 309,000 tourists who came to the World Cup spent about $400 million, based on studies of the tourism department. The estimates prior to the tournament were three times higher. While the World Cup saw FIFA profit more than $2 billion, it cost South Africa $4.3 billion -- including nearly a billion dollars to...

...government to shut down the No. 2 nuclear power plant in northern Taiwan, citing concerns about the safety of the plant. The protesters gathered outside the Legislature, calling for the government to review the operations of the 30-year-old plant in Wanli, New Taipei City. They pointed out that in a routine safety check on March 16, the state-run Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) found that one of 120 bolts that anchor the plant's No. 1 reactor to its concrete base had broken and six others had cracked. Taipower recently applied to resume operations of the No. 1 reactor after replacing some parts and carrying out other safety checks. But the environmental groups said the cracks in the bolts indicated deterioration of the nuclear power plant's structure, operating systems, parts and components. Allowing continued operation of the aging plant would jeopardize public safety. At a recent public hearing on the matter, Tsuei Su-hsin, secretary-general of Green Citizen Action's Alliance, said the decision to resume operations was not transparent. ...THE PLAYER Good game design is player-centric. That means that above all else, the player and her desires are truly considered. Rather than demanding that she do something via the rules, the gameplay itself should inherently motivate the player in the direction the designer wants her to go. Telling players they must travel around the board or advance to the next level is one thing. If they don’t have a reason and a desire to do it, then it becomes torture. In creating a game, designers take a step back and think from the player’s viewpoint: What’s this game about? How do I play? How do I win? Why do I want to play? What things do I need to do? MEANINGFUL DECISIONS Distilled down to its essence, game design is about creating opportunities for players to make meaningful decisions that affect the outcome of the game. Consider a game like a boxing match. So many decisions lead up to the ultimate victory. How long will I train? Will I block or will I swing? What is my opponent going to do? Where is his weakness? Jab left or right? Even those few, brief questions don’t come close to the myriad decisions a fighter must make as he progresses through a match. Games invite players into similar mental spaces. Games like Tetris and Chess keep our minds busy by forcing us to consider which one of several possible moves we want to take next. In taking these paths, we know that we may be prolonging or completely screwing up our entire game. The Sims games and those in...
