The former correction officer Brian Coll was sentenced to 30 years in prison after kicking an inmate in the head while being held down by other officers. Ronald Spear died due to the kick from Brian Coll. Ronald Spear was a pretrial detainee at Rikers island in the infirmary unit when he was killed in 2012. Coll and Spear got into an altercation where Coll tackled Spear while other inmates got control of the situation. During the altercation this is where Coll repeatedly kicked spear in the head causing his death. A witness Anthony Torres said in court that Coll was kicking his head as if he was kicking a field goal. After Spear was kicked Coll picked his head up from the ground and told Spear that this is what he deserves and to make sure remember who did this to you. Once the cover up began Coll told his captain that he was attacked with the cane and eventually used the can against spear causing the bodily damages spear had. Torres testified against Coll stating that his accusation about using the cane that cause spears death was incorrect, and told the judge that he repeatedly kicked him in the head. Torres told the jury that he kept silent up until the trial because you do not snitch on other officers.
