A Time to Listen, A Time to Speak

Chapter 3 of the book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there is an appropriate time for everything, such as planting and harvesting; building up and breaking down; crying and laughing; getting and losing; making war and making peace. Included in this list, in verse 7, is a time to keep silent and a time to speak. Good advice of course, but just how do we decide when to listen and when to speak?
Like most things, the Bible gives us guidance in this area. Proverbs 18:13 tells us that it’s foolish to speak in a matter in which we have not heard. In other words, we need to hear the whole story, not just a rumor – get the facts. Likewise, James 1:19 tells us to be “swift to hear, slow to speak”. Both of these verses seem to imply that listening is actually more important than speaking. That makes sense to me, since God gave us two ears, and only one mouth.
One of the things that influences how often a person speaks or listens is personality. Extroverts tend to be more talkative and think out loud; introverts tend to be quieter and think a great deal before speaking. You’ll often notice this at meetings. A few of the people do most of the talking. In the article “The Silent May Have Something to Say”, Kelley Holland describes this phenomena and compares a meeting to a tennis match in which a few vocal people talk back and forth , with most heads following those few speakers as they volley ideas. That’s a shame, because silent people often have a lot of good ideas that are not always vocalized.

Another reason people tend to speak or listen is because how they were taught. The book “The Loudest Duck” by Laura Liswood explains that while some people were taught to speak up (“the squeaky wheel gets the grease”), many others were taught jus the opposite, to keep quiet (“the loudest duck gets shot”).

When people speak or listen too much or too little, it can decrease the effectiveness of our organization, since good ideas may not be stated, or stated but not really heard. So what can we do to help?

First, if you are a good speaker who naturally dominates a discussion because you think and speak so quickly, be sensitive to others who aren’t as quick or vocal, and give them a chance. Second, if you are the type who is too often silent throughout an entire meeting, try to get up the courage to say something worthwhile. If need be, resort to raising your hand to get the chance to do so. Also consider attending Toastmasters which is dedicated to helping people formulate their thoughts and speak more quickly and confidently. Finally, if you’re the leader or facilitator of a meeting, make sure that everyone gets heard. One technique is to solicit a thought, idea or comment from each person in order around the table.

Perhaps the wisest decision ever made was by King Solomon when he had to decide which of two women was the true mother of a baby which both women claimed was hers (see I Kings, chapter 3). Each woman told a convincing story that it was the other woman’s baby who had died. Solomon had to listen with his ears, eyes, heart and mind while saying just a few carefully chosen words to enable him to make the right decision. We should strive to have the same effective balance of speaking and listening.

...Fluency is the ability to speak (and understand) English quickly and easily... WITHOUT translation. Fluency means you can talk easily with native speakers-- they easily understand you, and you easily understand them. In fact, you speak and understand instantly. Fluency is your most important English goal. The research is clear-- there is only ONE way to get fluency. You do not get fluency by reading textbooks. You do not get fluency by going to English schools. You do not get fluency by studying grammar rules. The Key To Excellent Speaking Listening Is The Key To get English fluency, you must have a lot of understandable repetitive listening. That is the ONLY way. To be a FANTASTIC English speaker, you must learn English with your ears, not with your eyes. In other words, you must listen. Your ears are the key to excellent speaking. What kind of listening is best? Well, it must be understandable and must be repetitive. Both of those words are important-- Understandable and Repetitive. If you don't understand, you learn nothing. You will not improve. That's why listening to English TV does not help you. You don't understand most of it. It is too difficult. It is too fast. Its obvious right? If you do not understand, you will not improve. So, the best listening material is EASY. That’s right, you should listen mostly to easy English. Most students listen to English that is much too difficult. They don’t understand enough, and so they learn slowly. Listen to easier English, and...

The Chosen By Chaim Potok Character Analysis

...being nothing left to say, or it hurts too much to speak about it. At the same time, silence could also present love. For example, just simply looking at a person a certain way, can capture their attention to the deep meaning of what one wants to say. In other words, silence could display pain, but also love, and sound louder than words while doing so. Believe it or not, you can sense more pain through silence than anything else. Almost as if silence speaks to a person’s heart, as opposed to their ears. It comes as a rush of emotions that are strong, almost as if heard. “You have to want to listen to it, and then you can hear it. … It doesn't always talk. Sometimes-sometimes it cries, and you can hear the pain of the world in it. It hurts to listen to it then, but you have to.” To emphasize, a person’s heart can...

...the candle burns itself out to give light-that is it gives of itself for others so too we must give of ourselves in love to others. I want to tell you the story of the Prophet of Elijah, who was told by an angel to go up to the mountain of Horeb. The angel told Elijah “Yahweh, God wants to speak to you.” When he reached on the mountain he experienced a terrible thunderstorm. But God did not speak to him in the thunderstorm. Then he experienced a great earthquake. But still God did not speak to him. Then there was a raging fire----------but still God did not speak. Finally there came a sound of gentle breeze and God spoke to him then. Just as for Elijah, when we focus on the noise and the tumult of life in this world, we may get our eyes off of the LORD. However, if we listen for His still, small voice and walk in obedience to His Word, we find victory and reward. This is why occasionally we need to retreat and be alone to give God a chance to speak to us , to speak in the silence of prayer. Ask them to close their eyes, pause for 2-3min Listen to what? Listen to God!!! How?, In each other-----with each other. I know people who have done CORs and it happens every time. A miracle takes place. Whatever happens has never happened before and it will never happen again. That’s part...

Listening

...listening. By that, I mean listening to truly understand the other person, not listening to agree or disagree, but simply listening to understand. There is an old Buddhist saying that goes something like: "Are you listening, or just preparing to speak." Recently, I heard someone from Europe speak on the subject of communication in America. He said this: "Americans aren't listening, they're just reloading." Ouch! That certainly does describe one kind of communication that seems to be increasingly popular these days. Have you ever been the victim of someone who is good at "reloading," someone who has been through one of those "effective listening" or "effective communications" courses? You know who I mean - they can make eye contact, lean forward, toss in the occasional "I see" and make every outward appearance of actually being attentive. The really good ones can also paraphrase or even repeat verbatim what is that you have to say. I am not referring to the person who is seeking to listen and to paraphrase before carrying on themselves; rather, I am thinking about the person who has become highly skilled at what I call "malicious listening." The malicious listener has mastered the art of listening with a not-so-hidden motive. This person listens to prove you wrong and uses your own words to make their case. They can quote you ("you said . . . .") and quickly follow with a retort, rejoinder, or snide comment about how wrong you are. Indeed, they are skillful at "reloading." The only...

Speak Essay

...It's not hard to speak; between rumors and confessions, words spill from our lips all the time. After all, we all naturally enjoy verbalizing our thoughts and being listened to. Those who are unable, or unwilling, to gain such attention always have a reason. Usually, these individuals are the ones who have something important to share. Melinda Sordino - the main character of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - is the epitome of such a character, she had several reasons to be silent. Melinda took nearly a year to speak out because she was surrounded by people who wanted to speak more than listen. For her, every reason became another wall, blocking and limiting her capability to speak. The start of Melinda's degeneration into utter mental and physical seclusion was the scarring event that took place at a party over summer. It was then she unwillingly experienced her first sexual encounter with senior Andy Evans. From the first protest to the last (verbal or otherwise), Melinda's voice was not heard, not listened to, and not heeded. Consequently, when she called the police, the teen couldn't say that she had been raped before the voice on the other line made the decision to send aid. Police rushed in to find a rowdy crowd of partying teens with alcohol. The party attendees and her friends were quick to make a cursory assessment and a superficial inquiry of the truth before promptly labeling her as the Squealer. Subconsciously known or quietly acknowledged, a prison began to build...

It is because children of migrant agricultural workers move so frequently to accommodate their parents’ search for employment, they often fall behind their non-migrant peers developmentally, socially and academically. So many different people or ethnic group was involve in the program. The whole week of my spring break, I went to the office, school, and some friends’ house to observe their culture. I am going to talk about the most people or ethnic groups who involve in the program. They are: Karen (who from Burma and Thai refugee camp), Chin (who also from Burma and Thai refugee camp), and Nepalese (who from Nepal). My whole week of spring break I went to the office located in 2029 S. 8th St. Philadelphia, PA 19148 to do my observation on the migration students and parents. Every Monday and Wednesday they had after school program and they also had Saturday school every week. About 300 of migrant students in the program and the building was small and had little tinny space and not enough for all of the students to come and participate. Because of that reason the coordinator of the program decided that on Monday and Wednesday they only allow students from Pre-K to 8 grade to come to the building for after school program. For high school...

...learn about three models of communication:  a. Linear model   b. Interactive model   c. Transactional model    1.2.1   Linear Model The linear model views communication as a one-way or linear process in which the speaker speaks and the listener listens. Laswell’s (1948) model was based on the five questions below, which effectively describe how communication works: Shannon and Weaver’s (1949) model includes noise or interference that distorts understanding between the speaker and the listener. Figure 1.3 shows a linear model of communication:    Figure 1.3: A linear model of communication Source: Wood, J. T. (2009). Communication in our lives (4th ed.). Belmont, CA: Thomson-Wadsworth Top 1.2.2     Interactive Model The main flaw in the linear model is that it depicts communication as a one-way process where speakers only speak and never listen. It also implies that listeners listen and never speak or send messages.   Schramm (1955) in Wood (2009) came out with a more interactive model that saw the receiver or listener providing feedback to the sender or speaker. The speaker or sender of the message also listens to the feedback given by the receiver or listener. Both the speaker and the listener take turns to speak and listen to each other. Feedback is given either verbally or non-verbally, or in both ways.  This model also indicates that the speaker and listener communicate better if they have common fields of experience, or fields which overlap (please...

Programming and Networking

... Many institutions offer evening and weekend classes, as well as online or distance education options. As more adults return to school, more services and resources become available to assist with this challenging but worthwhile endeavor. Ultimately, adult learners face a very unique set of challenges when deciding to enter or re-enter the educational sphere. In my case, I am facing some challenges since I started classes at ITT. I will talk about three of them, because they are the biggest ones for me. * Taking classes at not my first language is the biggest challenge for me. * Due the difficulty level, the stress that going back to school brings, is the second one on my list, * It is been more than ten years since the last time I took classes. So I have forgotten the techniques of study. Taking Classes in Second Language. Learning a second language is a real challenge, especially when you are an adult. Your first language is so entrenched in you by years and years of listening, writing, reading and talking your native language. This fact sometimes makes hard learning a second language because your brain is used to thinking in another language. The challenge is bigger is you want to go to school, because there is another challenge coming, to...

Listen

...There is a radio commercial that many of you will remember. “When E. F. Hutton speaks, people listen.” This morning we have to think about the question, when God talks, do we listen? It’s a serious question, and one that we always hope the answer for is a resounding, “yes!” Today is Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday before Lent. We celebrate this now precisely as a reminder that the one who leads us through the coming season of penitence and preparation is preparing us to participate in such glory with him both now and at his second coming. Hear the recounting of these events from Matthew: After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus...

Sound of Love

...Zihe Zhao EN 101-Composition 1 Joel Gabel July 4th, 2011 Sound of Love Life whispers in our soul and speaks to our heart. Sometimes, we don't have time to listen. Do we sometimes ignore lovely things because our lives are too fast and busy leaving them to wonder whether we really love them? I thought I was a patient man, but I was not until I met a nine year old boy. He let me know that people should pay attention to the small things, even a smile or a sound. I was almost tortured to the point of madness by my neighbors when I arrived in Omaha. I lived in a cheap place so I had to put up with the noise. One of my neighbors is a guy from Nepal, an international college student who only goes to school on Tuesdays and works six days a week for tuition and bills. Ironically he was a delivery man whose car engine sounded like an asthma patient with a megaphone. Every night when I had just fallen asleep in bed, the car would be back with its “cough” to wake me up. Another neighbor was Korean and bought a saxophone; he liked early morning practice the best. Every night I was devoid of sleep from drowsiness by the car, and I was woken up by the saxophone’s weeping sound in the early morning. I often, out of anger from sleep deprivation, wanted to make my way over to speak with them both, but didn’t right away. That car is the Nepalese guy’s career; and the saxophone is the Korean guy’s hobby. How could I let them give up their career and hobby? On behalf of my...

Latine Women Pray

...College where she received a B.A. in English and later an M.A. in English from Florida, Atlantic University. In the poem, “Latin Women Pray” the author, Judith Ortiz Cofer makes it seem that the women’s prayers are pointless. The women realize that prayer could be pointless, but keeping hope alive (being bilingual) they can find a reason to keep their faith. It signifies the faithfulness and devotion of Latin women in church. In line three, Cofer mentions “They pray in Spanish to an Anglo God with a Jewish heritage.” Meaning that these women have to pray to a God that is not like them. She characterizes the women’s God as a “Great White Father” and not as a Spanish one. It may be a representation of the American culture. They don’t speak the same language, they don’t share the same culture, indicating that the women are worshipping a being unlike themselves. They pray to a God that doesn’t understand what they are saying. Despite those differences the women keep praying to him with hope that someday they might understand each other. “Imperturbable in his marble pedestal looks down upon his brown daughters”, implies that even after all that praying these Latina women do, God sits calmly upon his pedestal and not impressed by all the prayers and candles lite up for him. He greets his women with a down look star. He is deaf to his followers from another culture. These women are blindly devoting themselves and praying to a God who is “unmoved by their persistent prayers”...

Effective Listening Strategies

...also discuss my thoughts on how I will use these strategies and how effective they may be. The first article I read is called “Listen Carefully." This article is discussing teaching listening skills to school-aged children. Some of the research reviewed shows the importance of listening when it comes to human learning and development. Learning how to listen is the first skill in language most children will develop first. Once children begin school, listening becomes even more important because the majority of what children learn is through listening. An interesting fact to me was when McPherson (2008) stated, “Teaching listening skills to middle school at-risk readers improved their reading comprehension scores and found that listening to a story while reading the story's words also improved elementary children's reading comprehension.” (McPherson, 2008) This speaks volumes to me especially when the teaching of listening skills in the classroom is not being done today. Teachers who start teaching listening strategies have shown children quickly acquire these skills by most K-7 students. What I learned from this article is the way effective listening strategies are being taught to these students. According to the article, listening strategies fall into two areas. The first is the strategies that help settle down the students and prepare to listen, and the other is strategies they use to demonstrate actively to...

Listening Skills in Business

...Expressive skills and receptive skills make up the two skills of communication. Speaking and writing are generally referred to as expressive skills; they provide the means by which we express ourselves to others. The receptive skills, listening and reading, are the ways in which we receive information. It has been reported that senior officers of major North American corporations spend up to 80 percent of their working time in meetings, discussions, face-to-face conversations, or telephone conversations. Most employees spend about 60 percent of the workday listening. Since such a large percentage of one's waking time is consumed by listening activities, it is clear that we could increase our productivity through listening training. Listening consumes about half of all communication time, yet people typically listen with only about 25 percent of their attention. Ineffective listening is costly, whether it occurs in families, businesses, government, or international affairs. Most people make numerous listening mistakes every day, but the costsinancial and otherwisere seldom analyzed. Because of listening mistakes, appointments have to be rescheduled, letters retyped, and shipments rerouted. Any number of catastrophes can arise from a failed communication regardless of the type of industry. Productivity is affected and profits suffer. Research indicates that we hear only 25 percent of what is said and, after two months, remember only one-half of that. This has not always...
