1 Aalto University School of Business
The Aalto University provides world class education in the fields of art, business and technology. The university was founded in 2010 when three prestigious universities, Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and University of Art and Design Helsinki merged. The merger opened up a world of possibilities for multidisciplinary education and research. The Aalto University School of Business is the new name of the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE) which was founded in 1911. The Aalto University School of Business engages in economics and business research and education. It is the largest institution of its kind in Finland with over 4,000 students. The Aalto University School of Business belongs to the top 1% of schools of business that have been granted the most important international quality accreditations in its field: AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. In 1998 the Aalto University School of Business became an academic member of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS), thus enabling some of the Master’s students to obtain a CEMS MIM (Master’s in International Management Program) degree besides the Aalto University School of Business home degree. The school is also a member of PIM (Partnership in International Management). The Aalto University School of Business has two campuses: one in the city of Helsinki and the other in the city of Mikkeli. In Mikkeli, the Aalto University School of Business offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration (BScBA, a lower academic degree) with a major in International Business. In Helsinki, the Aalto University School of Business offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration (BSc, a lower academic degree) and a degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration (MSc, a higher academic degree) as well as academic postgraduate degrees, i.e. licentiate and doctoral degrees. The applicant may apply in both admissions to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and to Helsinki and Mikkeli campus. The applicant may also be admitted in several admissions, but can accept only one study right. When the student has a study right at the School of Business Helsinki campus, s/he cannot, without a separate decision, study at the School of Business Mikkeli campus or vice versa. The Aalto University School of Business is genuinely international. You can apply to any of the Master’s programmes offered at the School of Business and if admitted, then apply for exchange studies, CEMS and double degrees as a student. The School of Business students may study one semester at a business school abroad and credits for the completed courses are transferred to the degree. In addition, the School of Business has agreements on double degrees with the University of Cologne and Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain School of Management. The International Design Business Management degree programme has a double degree agreement with the Tongji University in Shanghai. More information is available in the Admission Guide section 7.5. Exchange Studies, CEMS and Double Degrees.

3 Admission Process and Eligibility Requirements
The Master’s admission process consists of two phases: 1) General eligibility check, where it is checked that the application fulfills the general eligibility criteria for applying. Incomplete or ineligible applications are rejected. 2) Academic evaluation. Only the applications that meet the general eligibility criteria are forwarded to the degree programmes for academic evaluation. In academic evaluation the applications are ranked and the final admission decision is made by the degree programme according to the predefined academic evaluation criteria. These requirements are explained in detail below. Applicants who fulfill the requirements are not guaranteed to be admitted, because admission to the programmes is limited. Only the best applicants are admitted and the programmes do not have a minimum quota. In addition, admitted students may be required to take supplementary studies (please see the section 7.3 Supplementary Studies).

3 Admission Process and Eligibility Requirements

university level MBA-programme. In addition to the degree granting eligibility to apply also other studies taken at a Finnish or non-Finnish university/university of applied sciences may, by the decision of the School of Business, be taken into consideration. For the studies completed at the Aalto University School of Business Open University, only basic and subject studies (A and C level courses) can be considered as a rule. Only studies completed by the application deadline, 31 January 2014 at 4.15 p.m., can be considered in the admissions (completed meaning that the applicant has submitted an official transcript of the courses and grades). Students in their final year of the Bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply, provided that they complete their Bachelor’s degree by 31 July 2014. Admission is conditional for successful applicants who have not received their degree certificate by the application deadline. Conditionally admitted applicants must submit an officially certified copy of their degree certificate and final transcript (and their translations in English if the documents are issued in any other language than Finnish, Swedish or English) as soon as they have obtained them, however no later than 8 August 2014 at 4.15 p.m. (GMT +2). The applicant loses his/her study place if the aforementioned documents are not provided by the deadline. Please note that if you expect to graduate after 31 July 2014 and cannot submit your degree certificate by 8 August 2014 you are not eligible to apply in the admission round 2014. There will be no exceptions to the deadlines.

Note! An applicant with a Finnish higher university degree in “Economics and Business Administration” (Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration) is not eligible to apply for admission. Also an applicant, who already has a study right to take the Master’s degree at the Aalto University School of Business, is not eligible to apply. However, Aalto University’s cross-disciplinary degree programmes Creative Sustainability, International Design Business Management and Strategy make an exception for the rule. If admitted to one of the three degree programmes, the acceptance of the place will be considered as changing the study programme if the applicant has already chosen her/his Master’s degree programme at the School of Business.

including syllabuses, information on course literature and level of the course (not of courses completed at the Aalto University School of Business Helsinki/Mikkeli campus or the Open University of Aalto University School of Business). Large courses (over 5 ECTS credits) need to be itemized especially if they include several subjects, i.e. explained how the credits are composed of. If only part of the course content is relevant for admission, the School of Business has the right to consider only part of the course credits. If there is ambiguity about the content or level of the courses or course descriptions are not provided, the School of Business is forced to interpret the information in an unfavorable way as regards to the applicant. An explanation of the extent of the courses completed at a non-Finnish university compared to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits and the grades in a 5-point grading scale is required of all studies the applicant wishes to be taken into account in admission – unless they are originally registered in ECTS credits and grades. Information on ECTS credits and grades is available in section 5.3. The School of Business reserves the right to determine which courses are taken into account in admissions and it is decided case by case whether an applicant fulfills the requirement of sufficient previous studies in economic sciences or not. Courses are compared with the Bachelor-level courses at the School of Business (and other Finnish universities of Economic Sciences), and for instance, courses with very much applied content cannot be considered. It is the applicant’s responsibility to demonstrate that

at least the minimum amount of credits (36 ECTS) in the required subjects is fulfilled. In addition to the course descriptions, the applicant can provide a listing of the courses on his/her study transcript that fulfill the requirement in his/her opinion. Applications or the general eligibility of an applicant cannot be pre-evaluated before the application period. The decisions are made during the application period when all the required application documents (including course descriptions!) have been submitted. Note that Master’s programmes may have also programme-specific requirements for previous studies. The programme-specific requirements are listed in chapter 4.

To be considered for admission, the applicant must have completed at least 24 ECTS credits of such studies that give the applicant the ability to start the advanced studies in the Master’s programme in Economics. Those studies can include appropriate methodological studies and studies in Economics which equal at least the intermediate level courses in the subject of Economics taught in the Aalto University School of Business. Thesis work or internships cannot be included in the credits. The applicant’s previous methodological studies and studies in Economics, giving the ability to start the advanced studies, are assessed by a representative of the degree programme. However, to be considered for admission, the previous studies always need to include intermediate level courses in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics (basic courses are not sufficient to meet the requirement), and intermediate studies in Econometrics and in Mathematical Methods of Economics OR adequate enough studies in mathematical and statistical methods used in advanced Economics studies. When the above-mentioned prerequisites are fulfilled, the applicants are ranked on the basis of the previous studies giving the abil-

ity to start the advanced studies in the degree programme in Economics, the grades in them, GMAT/GRE test result and motivation letter (total max 20 points). 1) Points for the previous studies giving the ability to start the advanced studies are given as follows: ≥ 60 ECTS 5p 48 – 59 ECTS 4p 36 – 47 ECTS 3p 24 – 35 ECTS 2p < 24 ECTS not eligible for admission 2) Points for the weighted GPA of the courses taken into account in the above criterion are given as follows (5-point grading scale 1-5, where 5 is the best grade): 4.5 – 5.0 5p 4.0 – 4.4 4p 3.5 – 3.9 3.5 p 3.0 – 3.4 3p 2.5 – 2.9 2.5 p < 2.5 not eligible for admission 3) Points for the GMAT (Total Score) test result (or comparable GRE) are given as follows: ≥ 650 5p over 600 but under 650 3p < 550 not eligible for admission GRE is compared to GMAT using ETS guidelines and comparison tool. 4) The applicant must show his/her motivation for studying by writing a letter of motivation which will be graded on a scale 0-5 points. The motivation letter should answer at least the following questions: • Why am I applying for admission to this particular study programme? • What interests me in the degree programme in Economics? • Why should I be admitted? • What are my abilities to study Economics? Particular attention should be paid to explaining how the applicant’s previous studies cover the requirements of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and adequate methodological studies (Econometrics, Mathematical Methods or other methodological studies). The applicants are ranked on the basis of the total score gained in the above-mentioned criteria. In a case of a tie, the applicants are ranked on the basis of the GMAT or GRE test result. The applicants are not interviewed.

2) Motivation to study (motivation letter, Open University, further education training): 3 points if excellent motivation to study; 2 points if good motivation to study. Not eligible for admissions, if little motivation to study (1 point). The motivation letter must be written in the electronic application system in English and the maximum length of the letter is 100 words per question (max.500 words in total). The motivation letter should indicate that the student will be engaged in full-time studies, and touch at least the following points: • your entrepreneurial experience and competences • skills and competences you’d like to acquire while studying Entrepreneurship and • ways you plan to acquire them • and topic/s of Entrepreneurship research you’re interested in 3) Suitability of the previous credits for the degree programme in Entrepreneurship: 3 points if excellent suitability; 2 points if good suitability; 1 point if little suitability 4) International studies and experience: 3 points if excellent international studies and experience; 2 points if good international studies and experience; 1 point if little international studies and experience; 0 points if no international studies and experience

The authenticity of the qualifications will be verified with the HEC. Please note that a faster verification process applies for academic documents certified by the HEC after February 2009. We therefore urge everyone with older attestations to arrange for new ones. For more information, please see the HEC website www.hec.gov.pk.

5 How to Apply credit hours) 1 credit may often equal up to 2 ECTS credits (the degree totals to about 240 ECTS credits) In a Russian degree the work load of the degree is often measured in hours. In Finland one ECTS credit equals 26,66 hours. Therefore 26,66 could be used as a divider to work out how many ECTS credits a Russian degree corresponds to.

5.3 Information on ECTS Credits and Grades
ECTS credits ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a full-time student during one academic year. For example a Finnish 3-year Bachelor’s degree equals nowadays typically 180 ECTS credits (sometimes more). Student workload in ECTS consists of the time required to complete all planned learning activities such as attending lectures, seminars, independent and private study, preparation of projects, examinations, and so forth. The student workload of a fulltime study programme in Europe amounts in most cases to around 1500-1800 hours per academic year and one credit stands for around 25 to 30 working hours. In Finland the standard is 1600 hours per academic year, and 1 ECTS equals 26,66 hours of work. The general idea of ECTS conversion of the studies that the applicant has taken outside of Finland is needed for the application (not course by course). Normally 60 ECTS credits are taken within one academic year. Here are some examples of converting the international degree into ECTS credits: • In a Chinese 4-year Bachelor’s degree (~160 credits) 1 credit normally equals to 1.5 ECTS credits (the degree totals to about 240 ECTS credits) • In a UK 3-year BA degree (~360 credits) 1 credit normally equals to 0.5 ECTS credits (the degree totals to 180 ECTS credits) • In a US 4-year Bachelor’s degree (~120 •

More information for example on the European Commission website at: http://ec.europa.eu/education/lifelonglearning-policy/doc48_en.htm. ECTS grades The School of Business uses 5-point grading scale (ECTS grades) in the Master’s admissions. If the applicant’s university does not use a 5 scale ECTS grading, the grades need to be transferred into a 5 scale system. The Table 1 shows how the grades in Finland and at the School of Business would be compared to ECTS grades. Notice that only the passing grades are mentioned in the 5 scale system. A failing grade is not part of the grading, so if the grading is 4 scale and includes 1 failing grade, it is not yet a 5 scale system. The ECTS grading scale is based on the class percentile. The passing grades are divided into five subgroups: the best 10% are awarded an A grade, the next 25% a B grade, the following 30% a C, the following 25% a D and the final 10% an E. The academic year begins officially on 1 August and ends on 31 July. However, courses are mostly offered from September to May. When starting the studies, the first term starts around the end of August with the orientation to studies, the objective of which is to familiarize the students with the facilities of the School of Business and the other new students, as well as to advise them on how to start and proceed with their studies. Later on, teaching usually begins at the beginning of September. The last exams of the academic year take usually place in May. 7.5 Exchange Studies, CEMS and Double Degrees
The School of Business Bachelor’s and Master’s students may study one semester at a business school abroad. Annually over 300 students have used this opportunity. Credits for the completed courses are transferred to the degree. The credits completed during the exchange period have usually formed the student’s minor studies in the degree.

7 Studying at the School of Business
Design Business Management degree programme has a double degree agreement with the Tongji University in Shanghai. Within these agreements the students have the opportunity of completing a double Master’s degree parallel to their home university Master’s programme. A double Master’s is completed during two academic years, one spent at the Aalto University School of Business and one at the host university. There is a separate application system for exchange studies, CEMS and double degrees. The process takes place after the student is admitted to Master’s degree, usually during the first semester of the studies.

7 Studying at the School of Business fulfill the normal credit transfer rules and regulations of the Aalto University School of Business. The School of Business considers that the admission of a student is based on all of the studies and courses which can be seen from the application documents or the enclosures that the applicant has provided the School of Business with. Thus, all of those studies and courses have been taken into account in the admissions process. This means that the same studies cannot be used first for applying to the School of Business and then also to be transferred into the Master’s degree.

There are a number of partner schools (currently about 110) all over the world, which accept the Aalto University School of Business students as exchange students. Over 200 exchange students from abroad come annually to the School of Business for an exchange period. The membership in the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS) provides the Aalto University School of Business Master’s students with an opportunity to apply for the CEMS MIM (Master in International Management) Programme. Selected students can pursue the CEMS MIM parallel to their Master’s degree. Students will complete most CEMS elements, including studies at the home university and a semester abroad, during one academic year. The CEMS MIM is most suited for a student who is interested in languages, aims at a European career and is committed to a long-term study plan to achieve this goal. There are internship opportunities with the partner companies already during the studies and the corporate partners may recruit CEMS graduates for permanent jobs. The Finnish corporate partners are Nokia, Kone and Stora Enso. Some of the credits completed during the CEMS MIM usually form the student’s minor studies in the Aalto University School of Business Master’ degree. More information on CEMS: www.cems.org and http://biz.aalto.fi/en/studies/cems_studies_at_aalto_university/. The Aalto University School of Business has agreements on double degrees with the University of Cologne and with Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain School of Management. There are a number of clubs for various hobbies, sports and cultural interests.

8 General Information
8.1 Residence Permit
International students planning to study in Finland for more than three months need a residence permit. Citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland do not need a residence permit. The residence permit application should be submitted to a Finnish embassy in the country of your legal residence (usually your home country) as soon as you have received the acceptance letter from the university. The embassy will forward your application to the Finnish Immigration Service in Finland for a decision. The processing time of residence permits vary and it is important to start the process as soon as possible so that you receive your residence permit card in time. You must wait for the decision to your residence permit application abroad. The decision will be given through the embassy at which you submitted your application. A residence permit will not be issued without a proof of sufficient funds for supporting yourself during the entire period of study in Finland. You will need to have at least 560 euros per month to pay for your accommodation, food and other expenses. For one year of residence you are required to have 6,720 euros at your disposal. During your stay in Finland you must be covered by a private health insurance for your residence permit. Your insurance must cover medical expenses in the amount of 100,000 euros if your studies in Finland last less than two years. Your insurance must cover medical expenses in the amount of 30,000 euros if your studies in Finland last two years or longer. Do not take out a regular travel insurance, which is meant for holiday trips lasting less than three months. The insurance must be valid for your entire stay in Finland. The Finnish Immigration Service has introduced e-services in residence permit process. Submitting a residence permit application still requires a personal visit to a Finnish embassy. The processing of the residence permit application starts only after the student has identified him/herself in person at a Finnish embassy. At the embassy, you will also be fingerprinted for a biometric residence permit card. Please note that the Aalto University does not have authority in residence permit matters. For more information on residence permit; please see the Finnish Immigration website: www.migri.fi. Information on issues regarding foreign students in Finland can also be found in www.studyinfinland. fi. See also the health insurance package for Aalto students at www.aalto.fi/en/ studies/student/for_future_students/ insurance_policy.

8.2 Accommodation
Degree students at the Aalto University are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. The Aalto University does not own student dormitories and cannot provide assistance in this matter. It is recommended that you apply for an apartment immediately upon receiving your admission letter. Student housing is provided either by the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) or the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS).

Note! The Aalto University School of Business does not have any funds available for supporting students in the need of financial assistance. Foreign citizens can get financial aid for studies from the Finnish government only if they have lived in Finland at least two years for purposes other than studying, and their residence in Finland is considered permanent.

8 General Information

8 General Information

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) apartments are located in the Helsinki area. Students who have been accepted to the Aalto University and who have signed up as members of AYY and paid the membership fee can apply for AYY apartments. See www.ayy.fi/en. Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS) offers rooms in shared apartments, apartments for families as well as studio apartments. Most student apartments consist of single rooms and shared apartments, and they have quite good public transportation to the School of Business. Many students in Finland live in shared apartments, which are cheaper and usually easier to get than private housing. A shared apartment is basically a big apartment where every student has a private room and where the kitchen and bathroom are shared. Further information: www.hoas.fi. The demand for student housing has been steadily increasing and HOAS and AYY do not have the capacity to accommodate all the students. Therefore students should be prepared to seek for accommodation from the private rental sectors too. Similar to the other European metropolises, the housing situation in the Helsinki region is challenging. Rental level is relatively high and finding affordable accommodation can be difficult especially in the beginning of the autumn term. It is usually easier to find accommodation in the spring term.

8.3 Insurance and Student Health Services
University students have their own health center, Finnish Student Health Service, which provides preventive, dental, and mental health care. The services include free medical examinations and consultations, vaccinations, maternity care, and general medical treatment. For specialists’ appointments and dental treatment a small nominal fee is charged. To receive these services the student must have a valid student ID card, which s/he gets after paying the student union membership fee. The Finnish Student Health Service system does not cover all medical costs, therefore international students are strongly recommended to have a medical insurance of their own while staying in Finland. See also the residence permit chapter for the insurance requirements for obtaining a residence permit.

8.4 Student Union AYY
The Aalto University Student Union (AYY) is the official student organization of the Aalto University. Every Bachelor’s and Master’s degree student enrolled in the Aalto University is a member of the Student Union. The purpose of AYY is to represent the students, look after their interests, and support the community of 15,000 students. AYY provides its members with a variety of services such as health care and housing. It is home to over 200 associations for activities varying from sports, music and games, all the way to events and parties. The Student Union is financed by membership fees, investments and profits from student housing. To enrol at the Aalto University you have to pay the Student Union (AYY) membership fee. The obligatory fee includes the health care fee of the Finnish Students Health Service FSHS (YTHS). Note that the FSHS fee is not an insurance policy neither does it cover hospitalization costs. The students of the School of Business may also join the Association of Economics Students in Helsinki (more information www. kyweb.fi). KY membership is free of charge.
