In the world there are several countries who conduct their correctional systems the same as the United States and then there are some who do just the opposite. The American correctional system is designed to incarcerate and try to rehabilitate offenders, if possible. I chose to compare the American correctional system with that of the Iraqi correctional systems. This paper will show the differences in the two. It will also show how the American correctional system is run in comparison to that of the Iraqi correctional system. The American correctional system is set up with different types of prisons. Most prisons are run by the state government although the United States does have federal prisons. The federal prisons are run by the federal government. In the United States, prisons are operated at various levels of security, ranging from minimum-security prisons that mainly house non-violent offenders to Supermax facilities that house well-known criminals and terrorists (DeMaille, 2007). In the United States, prisons house more than two million prisoners. The majority of criminals in the prison system are because of drugs and violent crimes. As of the end of August 2010, there were approximately 210,000 prisoners in federal prisons with about half of those for drug related crimes (BOP, 2010). In the United States there are two well-known federal penitentiaries. They are Alcatraz, which is closed, and the Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas. The biggest drug related crimes is transporting illegal drugs across state lines. Prior to the American Revolution, the American prisons were not used for punishment, there were used mainly for executions and physical torture. They built prison walls to keep the prisoners in and to keep the public from seeing what was going on inside those

...A World Apart A World Apart Farrah Anglada-Lauer Axia College of University of Phoenix 2 The first penitentiary was opened in a wing of the Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Jail in 1790. This penitentiary operated with the belief that silence and labor was the appropriate rehabilitation tactic. “A system of behavior modification was introduced in the Walnut Street Prison, the system of secondary reinforcement so widely used in today's prisons. Each prisoner was given fair pay for his/her labor. The prisoner was debited for the cost of maintenance, and an additional sum was deducted for the prisoner's share of tools. The prisoner was also required to pay the costs of the trial, as well as a fine to the State. If there was a balance against the prisoner at the time of expiration of sentence, the person was retained until it was liquidated.”(Takagi, n.d) Incarceration in the United States is one of the main forms of punishment for the commission of many offenses. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world and the highest prison population in the world. When researching the American Correctional System there is a lot of information to cover, such as the types of offenders in the system and the different levels of security. How do the United States correctional system compare to Canada’s correctional system? Five Miles Away, a World Apart

...Five Miles Away, A World Apart by James E. Ryan The public school system in the United States of America has undergone many transformational policy changes since its inception in the 17th century. These policy changes have largely been proportionate to the epidemic that is segregation. Segregation in the public schools of the United States has been the focus of many political agendas. Politicians, activists, scholars, and citizens have fought long and hard to create an equal public education for each and every child regardless of race, religion, or creed. To better understand the history and timeline of segregation within the US public school system, we need not look much further than James E. Ryan’s book, Five Miles Away A World Apart, One City, Two Schools, And The Story Of Educational Opportunity In Modern America. Mr. Ryan gives an immensely detailed portrayal of the educational divide in this country by using two high schools in the state of Virginia. These schools, Freeman and Tee-Jay, located a mere 5 miles apart, are representative of the educational segregation plaguing our schools. On the one hand we have Freeman High School, which is almost 80 percent white and Tee-Jay High School, which is about 80% black. It is clear to see that Ryan chooses these two schools, as they represent the great divide between urban and suburban public schools throughout our nation. Five Miles Away, A World Apart does a great job informing us on all of the policies...

...keep families apart. Imagine today's family gathered in the kitchen for dinner. Maybe the TV is on, a laptop on the kitchen counter and everyone has their phone with them. Mom and dad are keeping an eye on emails even though the work day is technically over. So this family is physically together, but they are not totally focused on and paying attention to each other. They are at least partially attentive to a ping or a beep indicating that there is a new text message, email or missed call. * So how can we use ICT to our advantage - for increased productivity, reduced stress, and better work+life fit? We'll need our organizations to pitch in by providing guidelines about expectations and strategies for effectively managing our devices. Comparison Between Things Fall Apart and Nervous Conditions

...1.)Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Nervous Conditions by…and Mine Boyby Peter Abrahams are all novels by African writers whom illustrate various cultural issues and universal issues within the dynamic continent of Africa. However, there was a focus on three major themes that contributed to the relevancy of the novels which are tradition vs. progress, gender inequality, and the “white dream”. Traditions vs. progress or change was one of the most poignant themes throughout all three novels. There have been several universal biases against Africa implying that Africa is a resilient country that opposes change and as a result of their stubborn ways suffer, living an expired life struggling in poverty and disease. As a result, the authors of the novels write in a way that demonstrates how Westerners imposing their industrialization, religion, and cultural views upon the African people have in some ways handicapped the actual African society from revolutionizing themselves. For example in Things Fall Apart Okonkwu constantly resisted change and eventually let his resistance become his demise by committing the moral crime of suicide. However the majority of his Igbo society transitioned to Christianity, denying their own culture and joining the oppressors whom mocked their culture. Nonetheless, this proves that Africa is a society that can change because of the lasting legacy of colonization in Africa. What are the postcolonial themes and concerns of the novels we have...

Politician

...a class apart from all others but, the Indian politician is a class apart even from the politicians of the world. It would be very interesting to study why this class is a class by itself. In most cases, the reason is not far or difficult to seek. The reason is simple and straight. He is the person who at one time was on some lower strata of the hierarchy of the social set up and, once he becomes a politician, he has a magical rise to the highest rung of the same hierarchy - as, now it is he who rules the country. So, this individual who was once a part of the general public having attained the top slot in society is bound to develop a sort of a web around himself. Through this web people may be able to see him but they will not be able to touch him. This web is created by him and, is added to by his cronies who wish to take advantage of him and his position. This situation of a politician being someone high and mighty exists everywhere in the world but the position in India achieves a higher rank than politicians of the world because he is also there to wind up the work for the people and start looking after his own interests as, he may lose the position any time and any day. The special characteristic of the Indian politician is that, though he is on the highest rung of the social order but, unlike other politicians of the world, he is also on the lowest rung of discipline and character. It is this feature of the Indian politician makes him a class apart from the...

Butter

...From the title of W.B. Yeats poem, "The Second Coming", one might expect to read about the glorious return of Christ to save his followers. However, Yeats portrays a dismal world where anarchy reigns over the innocence of man. The passage portrays a dark and foreboding atmosphere that serves as a warning to what may lie ahead for humankind if we continue on our current path. The poem appears to be written in free verse which adds to the poems references to "things falling apart" and "anarchy loosed upon the world." This lack of structure within the poem helps the reader feel as if they are a part of Yeats' condemned world. Yeats uses this poem to show his views of the world and its "right" paths of science, democracy and heterogeneity which are now beginning to come apart. This is shown in the first stanza. The lines "The falcon cannot hear the falconer", "the center cannot hold" and "mere anarchy is loosed upon the world" show the disintegration of our society. He follows this with the description of a "blood-dimmed tide", which could represent war tearing apart our civil world. It seems Yeats wishes to show us that we are approaching an inevitable end to humanity as we know it. In the second stanza, we are introduced to the second coming. However it does not appear to be the Savior for our problems. Instead Yates writes of a sphinx with a "blank and pitiless" gaze. Why Yeats chose this image to represent the coming of a new age seems mysterious. However, from this...

...“Until the lions produce their own historians, the story of the hunt will glorify only the hunter.” Chinua Achebe, Home and Exile Literature is the expression of life in words of truth and beauty. It encompasses all genres of literature-poetry,prose,fiction,drama,philosophy,history etc.Among them, fiction is any narrative, whether in prose or verse, which is invented instead of being an account of events that actually happened. The voice of Africa in the world of letters tries to emancipate Africa from its literary stereotype.Africa is no longer a gloomy phenomenon,a dark continent.Chinua Achebe, the major exponent of the modern African novel,is greatly concerned with the two realities of social man –his individual and group identity, the legacy of colonialism, and the shift in the system of values of life leading to rampant corruption- moral and monetary. He is also concerned with the use of English as the medium of expression of African experience defining the relevance of colonial and post-colonial experience to the present .Achebe’s novels are dialectic tranformation of experience, a new way of looking at tradition to create a different order of reality through universalizing imagination.Though he has followed the established tradition of novel writing in English, Achebe has put few things ‘African’ and has successfully employed certain narrative techniques of narration to give authenticity and African flavour to his novels in order to attract the native audience and...

Fidget Spinners Persuasive Essay

...I mean, really? Why is this even a concern! Apparently a fake news article was circulating stating a physicist claimed that with all the people spinners in the world with metals and magnets, it could quite possibly affect the earths center of gravity. However, it has since been been determined that even if everyone in the entire world were to join in one big fidget spinning party, it would have no affect on the Earth's center of gravity or rotation, so spin away! Multiple reports have stated that fidget spinners can become lodged in certain areas of the body. Although I feel this should not be included in any kind of instruction or disclaimer. It is not a good idea to shove a fidget spinner into your anal cavity. It's just not smart. I mean, I don't even understand why this is even a thing. Now, I will say that all the news stories that I have read on this topic appear to be fake news and are on mostly satire websites. But I will end this section with this, if you feel that purchasing...

A Look from a Broken Perspective

...From A Broken Perspective Destruction of families all across the world is becoming more recognizable to society due to a families falling in on their selves. Everyone can see the realm of their own world cracked in some manner leading to functioning parts of the society slowing to a halt. Either this falling apart of oneself comes on by divorce or some type of dysfunctional family situation. Only the ones who express these faults to the open public are deemed as social problem. This could cause status to be formed and to put down these people. Families are supposed to be the nurturing source of life which protects its own members from harm, but not all family housing is perfect, let alone normal, considered under these circumstances; we see and know these groups as dysfunctional families. When dysfunctional families are thought of, most tend to think of unruly children, or teenagers, who want nothing to do and who are quite unstable with their parents or guardians (Akerman, 2009). This situation can be true; however it is not always included in the top percentile. Within dysfunctional families, most are caused by the splitting of parental units, divorce. Although this is not the one and only factor that causes a family to begin to tear down the inner walls of compassion, resulting with a dramatic dispersion; this scenario has quickly grown to one of the main factors of this equation. Spouses who have grown apart from each other can and will affect the whole family and the outcome...

Essay On Pantheism

...Perhaps there has never been a more broad and persistent influence in the world of philosophy and religion as Pantheism. “Pantheism is the philosophy of the religious consciousness of India, affirming that there is no God apart from nature, and that everything in nature must be considered as a part, or manifestation of God. Pan means all and Theos means God. Pantheism then, implies all is God and God is all.” Though Pantheism has had some negative effects on the religious world, there are some positive insights that one can gain when looking at this man-made philosophy. First of all, Pantheism attempts to be comprehensive in its perspective. In other words, Pantheism embraces a broad range of ideas both metaphysical and comprehensive. It is...

Things Fall Apart

...Latria Stridiron Dr. Hendricks HIST.350.020 September 27, 2012 Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Chinua Achebe a Nigerian native wrote Things Fall Apart a groundbreaking novel as a response to European writings about Africa such as Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness and Joyce Cary Mister Johnson. Indignant at the way Africans were portrayed in those novels, Achebe looked for a way to show the world the richness of African culture, and in so doing, give his people a voice in the global society. Achebe announced that one of his purposes was to present a complex, dynamic society to a Western audience who perceived African society as primitive, simple, and backward. It was also a response to the Western beliefs that the Africans were uncivilized and barbaric. Achebe got most of his view from his own culture through the writing of Europeans. At first he related to the European writings, but as time went on, he felt they were poor caricatures and stereotypes of the actual people, and he tried to show this through his writing. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe illustrates this vision by showing us what happened in the Igbo society of Nigeria at the time of its colonization by the British. Because of internal weaknesses within the native structure and the divided nature of Igbo society, the community of Umuofia in this novel is unable to withstand the tidal wave of foreign religion, commerce, technology, and government. Unless Africans could tell their side of their story, Achebe...

Reflection Paper

...my faith and the Bible better. I am convinced that to truly know and understand your Savior, you need to understand your need for one first. The Fall of Man The fall of man is defined as the moment when Adam sinned against the Lord. Previous to this day, man had an intimacy with God and regular communion with him. In no way was Adam hindered in his relationship with the creator God. This day brought devastation to the relationship man had with God. The Bible describes it as how sin and death entered the world.[do not change fonts] “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.” (Romans 5:12-14) Sin and death now reigned in the world. But how can we apply this knowledge to our daily life? First of all, it is important to know about the fall and how humanity has been separated from God. We cannot know God on our own because we have fallen. A deeper understanding of this then leads to us understanding how we are born with a sin nature. Sin Nature There is a belief held my many individuals who...
