Chapter 1 – Finding Your Inner Fish
1. Explain why the author and his colleagues chose to focus on 375 million year old rocks in their search for fossils. Be sure to include the types of rocks and their location during their paleontology work in 2004.
In 365 million year old rocks the amphibians had characteristics that were not similar to fish, but in 385 million they found fish that were dissimilar to amphibians. The scientists then looked at the 375 million year old rocks to find the missing piece. The rocks were sedimentary rocks in composition which are formed on the bottom of rivers and some seas as well, where most marine life live. Some places they looked were Ellesmere Island, in Canada, a good location due to the lack of human effects on the environment.
2. Describe the fossil Tiktaalik. Why does this …show more content…
Refer to the timeline on p.121 in Your Inner Fish – what is most surprising to you about the timescale? Explain your choice.
The thing that is most surprising to me is how recent humans came into existence on earth, it brings up the question of what earth was like before humans.

2. What is the most common protein found in the human body? Name it and describe it.
Collagen is the most common protein in the body, it shows similar characteristics to a rope because of its tiny fibers, it is strong when held tightly but weak when slack is given.

3. How do cells communicate with one another?
Cells comunicate by emmitting signals (molecules) back and forth with one another, the signal goes from the membrane of the new cell to the nucleus, therefore completing the communication.

4. What are choanoflagellates and why have they been studied by biologists?
Choanoflagellates are single celled microbes that are the closest microbe relative to an animals body. They are studied because scientists now have a pathway to compare the bodybuilding apparatus to

...Describe one weakness or area of growth that you overcame in our class and how you overcame it. Before I entered AP Biology this year, I was really self-critical of my own work. My self-esteem was not at the level I wanted it to be, and I deemed any success that I had as a fluke. Throughout the year, I gradually grew more confident about my own work. I would have to attribute biology to being one of my favorite subjects and my willingness to help others. I was so eager to learn more biology this year, and inevitably I had the opportunity to help others. I became progressively more confident about my abilities to say the correct answer and produce high quality assignments and projects not just due to chance, but because of my dedication to learning the...

AP Class Reflection

...Before I took this class, I was already afraid of its difficulty. This is my first science AP class and I was anxious that I wouldn’t be able to handle it. As the year went by, I continued to still be afraid of failing, but not as much as I was before I took the class. I now know that if I complete all my tasks and study, I will do fairly well. As a junior, I feel like taking this class now is the best time for me. This course is preparing me for what college classes are like. I am also learning a lot about college applications and what to do in my senior year. The most difficult task in this class so far was the very first lab that we were assigned to do in the summer. It was hard for me because I did not like writing lab reports and I am not good at them. I also did not like working with the pill bugs. My proudest achievement in this course was when I got an 84.5 on my midterm. I studied for a long time and was in fear of how difficult it was. After I took the test, I thought I had failed. I was happy when I saw that I had passed. I think I still need to work on my studying habits. I need to study more before a test and actually read the textbook instead of skimming it for important information. I am a visual learner. I feel...

Essay On Being Raised Bilingual

...Wanting to be like the other kids gave me a goal, a perseverance and a tenacity which has helped me in all areas of my life. Being unable to read, write, or do math when it was expected of me, gave me a drive which pushed me to my breaking point, refining me to my full potential. It made me want more for myself, push myself to new frontiers. But I also have a deeper understanding for certain levels of education because I had to truly process what I was learning in order to move on to the next chapter. Now essays come easy to me, dividing numbers with letters makes sense, and biology and chemistry come easier than before. Furthermore, struggling in certain subjects made me work harder at every assignment and turned me into a well rounded student. Being bilingual at a young age might have seemed a misfortune and a torture when I was little, but now it is the biggest blessing I could have asked...

Patter for Research Paper

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction English language teaching has become very important because of the global status of English and people all over the world are learning this language. English language programs worldwide have become increasingly aware of the needs for curriculum review due to both demographic and situational changes taking place. As students’ populations, societal views, and institutional factors are constantly changing, English language programs need to be implemented routinely to make the changes necessary to facilitate the desired outcome of the program. Determining the needs of students is seen as a direct way to inform the teachers of the possible goals and objectives necessary to create a teaching and learning environment suited to the needs of the students. According to Nunan, 1989, the effectiveness of a language program will be dictated as much by the attitudes and expectations of the learners by the specifications of the official curriculum. It is important to understand how students’ perceived language needs because this will give the language teachers the idea on what to teach to the learners. The needs of a learner represent the gap between what the learner wants to get out of the learning experience and his or her current state of knowledge, skill, and enthusiasm (Noessel, 2003). Each learner is unique, and brings to the learning situation his or her own different learning style, knowledge set, pool of past experiences...
