ABC Inc. Case Study

ABC Inc. Case Study Carl Robins, the new campus recruiter for ABC, Inc., is currently encountering an issue in his new role. Robins only has been with the company for six months when he came across his first major task. Robin’s first assignment was to recruit several new hires who would work for Monica Carrolls, the operations supervisor for ABC, Inc. Robins, fell short when he attempted to complete these tasks. Background This case study involves many issues because of Robin’s lack of planning and using his time properly. Carl hired 15 new employees in May to work for Ms. Carrolls; expecting to start in June. He scheduled a new hire orientation to take place on June 15th. Ms. Carrolls contacted Carl on May 15th to follow up with him on some of the following things; orientation, manuals, the training schedule, drug tests, and everything else that goes into the process of hiring new employees. When Carl returned to the office after Memorial Day, he pulled out the files for his new trainees to finalize the paperwork needed for the new hires to start orientation on the 15th of June, which is coming up quick. When looking through the files, Carl became worried when he noticed some of the new trainees did not have applications completed, nor were their transcripts on file. He also found that the mandatory drug test has not yet been sent to the clinic for screening. After going through the files, he searched the orientation manuals, and found that he was short on manuals and they had pages missing. After all that, Carl decided to check on the status of the room where the new hire orientation would be held. He found, the room occupied for seminars that would be held during the entire month of June.
Key Problems Carl became involved in some stressful situations which will need to be addressed and resolved immediately. These problems are stated as follows: • Applications not completed • Transcripts not on file • Mandatory drug screening not done • Conflicts with the orientation room Applications Not Completed The first thing Carl needs to do is to take immediate action and contact the new hires to have them complete any necessary paperwork that has not yet been completed. Carl has limited amount of time, so he must act quickly. Transcripts Not On File The next step to resolve this problem would be to make sure when he contacts the new hire employees about the incomplete paperwork; make sure to mention that the transcripts are also needed, and they need to have those on file immediately. Carl has two weeks to obtain focus, which should allow enough time to complete the files. Mandatory Drug Screening Not Done Once Carl contacts the new hire employees he needs to take the next step, and contact the Drug testing clinic and have them send over the results as soon as possible. If the drug testing has not yet been done, he needs to make sure the new hires know that this is a priority that needs to be done immediately upon starting. Conflicts with the Orientation Room This problem here is a lack of communication that Carl failed to take into consideration. The next step for Carl would be to communicate with technology services, and see if there is not a gap in the day which Carl could reserve the spot to hold the orientation at that time. Carl needs to figure out how long orientation will take so he can plan accordingly to work around technology services seminars. Possible Solutions ABC Inc. would not benefit from firing Carl Robins. “According to John Dooney, manager of strategic research at the Society for Human Resource Management, if no other employee leaves due to the departure of the original departing employee, the cost of losing an employee is about 38 percent of the departing employee's annual wage. If another employee of similar rank/pay leaves the percentage doubles.” (Entrepreneur, 2001) Therefore, by loosing Carl as an employee, due to his lack of planning and following up on his work would only result in more work and money for the company. ABC Inc. would have to spend a ton of money in order for it to be legal to let Carl go. For example, ABC Inc. would have to go through an exit interview, possible severance packages, and unemployment pay. Also it would take time and money to hire new employees due to drug testing, orientation, interviews, training someone to do Carl’s job, and possible signing bonuses. Another thing ABC Inc. would have to consider would be the legal aspect of firing an employee. Previous employees have the right to sue a company if they believe that they were treated unfairly. Perhaps the best course of action to take would be to consider the problems and create a list of the best solutions. There are several approaches when understanding the situation and figuring out the outcome.
Proposed Solutions In order for ABC Inc. to run properly, every department needs to know what exactly is expected in their role as an employee. Carl Robins existing in his role for only six months should have been looked at closer by his supervisor. The director or supervisor in Carl’s department should have checked in with Carl periodically to make sure his tasks were being completed on a timely manner. Carl should have asked questions, or let his supervisor know if he were developing a hard time completing certain tasks. He also could have kept a checklist or a timeline, so he knew exactly what needed to get done and how long he had to complete each task. If Carl would have prioritized his assignments, he would have known that everything as far as, the drug test, and the completed applications, needed to be done upon the starting date of the new hires. In order for Carl to succeed on this recruiting assignment, he needs to find a way to cope with his procrastination so he can better manage his time. The first step to stopping procrastination is to figure out what needs to get done and make note of upcoming deadlines. Next he needs to “prioritize the tasks he finds difficult to complete.” (Study Guides & Strategies, 1996) Start by putting them in order from most important to the least important.
Conclusion
Considering the circumstances listed above, Carl can better prepare so he can accomplish his assignments. By looking at the possible solutions to this problem, Carl can take a better approach to try to solve the issues listed above. If Carl can find a way to help him with his procrastination problem, he can move forward with his assignment and succeed.
