Abraham and Lot

1. How does Genesis 18 contrast with Genesis 19 regarding God’s character and activities?
The eighteenth chapter contrasts Abraham’s fellowship with his guests as a good fellowship filled with loving respect and blessing from God. The latter is filled with violent destruction of Sodom and Gemorrah. It shows God’s loving concern and interaction with each of us, but is very concerned about wickedness and that it will be dealt with.

2. Describe the typical hospitality displayed in Genesis 18 during this time.
Abraham’s hospitality is that of oriental Asians today in that he would not allow a visitor to pass him by without showing hospitality. When the three men appeared it was the custom to fall down and show respect to one who is greater than yourself or is considered greater than yourself, as the visitor was addressed as “my Lord”. Then with respect many people were put into action to serve the person the best of what you have. So a whole meal was prepared, as well as washing the feet of the visitors showing servitude. Jesus displayed this type of servitude at the “last Supper” with His disciples.

3. Describe the kind of laughter of Sarah.
The laughter of Sarah was of unbelief, or considered derisive as the book puts it. She might not have known of the promise that was given to Abraham. Then in her old age thinking it is impossible by this time to have a child as she has not had her own, in the many years she has been alive.

4. How does the Lord evaluate Abraham?
Abraham was considered a friend of God because of his faithfulness, obedience and consistent behavior and love for the Lord. Therefore the blessing of his generations would become great in the future.

5. When is intercessory prayer effective?
Intercessory prayer is effective when we realize the awesomeness of God’s righteous judgment. It is not possible to pray for one’s soul, if it is not understood that literal and eternal punishment results due to ones depth of lostness.

6. What was the sin of Sodom that caused God’s judgement?
The sin of Sodom was that of sexual sins. Incest and bestiality and other immoral offenses that would result in capital punishment. These offenses would not be tolerated by God and are often referred to in the New Testament as serious offenses against a Holy God.

7. How did God destroy Sodom?
God had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with “brimstone and fire.” Perhaps, according to Davis; a large earthquake may have occurred along with lightening, resulting in large explosions causing great destruction of the two cities. Whatever happened, it is certain that the conflagration was very supernatural.

8. Where has Sodom been located?
It is not absolutely certain but it is believed, after mush study in detail, that Sodom was located on the lowest portion of the Seil en-Numeirah, which flows into the Dead Sea at approximately the center of the east side of the embayment.

9. How is this story often depicted in the New Testament?
As a warning, it constantly implores believers to fellowship and strengthen their relationship with the Lord.

10. How is Lot described?
Lot is described as one attached to the things of this world and materialism. Though he left Sodom it was difficult to remove the philosophy of the place from his human character.

12. From Deuteronomy 2:9-21. How does God bless Lot?
The Lord gave the command to the Israelites to not harass or provoke the inhabitants of Moab. The Land of Ar was given to the descendants of Lot as a possession. Also the land of the Ammonites was given to the descendants of Lot. The Lord drove the people of these lands out and gave the land to the Moabites and the Ammonites.

According to Davis; Abimelech is a dynastic title. The definition of”Abimelech" is a name claiming the inherited right to rule. This was also a common name of the Philistine kings. The real name of this person, who was the king of Gerar in Isaac’s time, is unknown. But so is the name of the King of Achish of Gath in David’s day called Abimelech

.

15. How does this encounter (Gen 20) put the promise in jeopardy again?
It was the lie that Abrahm tried to use to save his own skin. The lie was that instead of saying she was Abraham’s wife, she was to tell Abimelech that she was his sister and that Abraham was her brother. It was the use of deception that may have caused jeopardy to the promise once again.

16. How is the word “prophet” used of Abraham in Gen 20?
As Abimelech took innocently took Sarah as his wife, God kept him from sinning with Sarah. Ishmael had the proud suspects of winning the inheritance of his father Abraham. With the birth of Isaac, came shattered dreams of that reality. Ishmael was angry. Davis says; “Ishmael is moved to mad hatred. Proud and impetuous…..On the occasion of a great feast given in honor of Isaac, Ishmael is guilty of insolence, mockery and insult.”[1]

18. What does Abraham’s covenant with Abimelech tell us about Abraham?
That Abraham was a just and peaceful man. He did not want trouble but they both wanted control of the valuable water sources in the area. Abraham was not a weak person. He was strong in that he agreed to this covenant between them that peace would be maintained, an exchange of gifts was celebrated and Abraham celebrated by planting a grove and worshipped God at this location.

19. How is the promise in jeopardy again in Genesis 22?
As called on Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. God meant to sacrifice in dedication, not in death. This was misinterpreted by Abraham. Abraham took Isaac to a place that God commanded. With him he took wood and a knife. He tied Isaac up and was about to sacrifice him as a sacrificial lamb. God had stopped the act and provided a ram to be sacrificed instead. Abraham’s responses demonstrated is unadulterated faith in God. This was done to develop Abraham’s spiritual character.

20. List three ways of trying to explain why God told Abraham to do what he did. a. The trial of faith was necessary to mature and develop Abraham’s spiritual character. b. I t resulted in renewed assurance that God would fulfill His covenant. c. God promised that Abraham’s seed would “possess the gate of his enemies”, which indicates the successful taking of land under Joshua.

The trial of faith, to mature his Character, so that all these other promises may come to pass.

22. What does Hebrews 11:17-19 tell us about Abraham’s beliefs?
That Abraham’s beliefs were solid. That his first priorities were of God, and to be obedient to Him. His faith was solid. It had to do with Hittite law and the selling of land. Ephron was reluctant to sell Abraham only the cave because he did not wish to remain responsible for the feudal services required by law. So Abraham purchased the field along with the cave.

25. How does this encounter affect the authority of scripture?
It actually confirms scripture. They preclude a late date for the composition of Genesis. Davis states “We have thus found that Genesis 23 is permeated with intimate knowledge of intricate subtlities of Hittite laws and customs, correctly corresponding to the time of Abraham and fitting in the Hittite features of the Biblical account.
It also confirms the authenticity of the “background material” of the Old Testament.

26. Name all the ones buried in this cave.
All the people buried in the cave at Machpelah are, Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob. Rachel is the only exception.

27. What does Abraham’s act of bury Sarah in the land indicate about Abraham.
This is proof of Abraham’s unwavering faith. The true saint has no buried hopes, only anticipation of a glorious future. Abraham is then remembered for his far-reaching faith which caused him to look for a city “whose builder and maker is God.

Why Is Abraham Lincoln Unjust

Unfortunately he was assassinated in April 15, 1865 by a man that goes by the name of John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln was assassinated because of his beliefs that slavery was amiss and because the south feared that he would snatch their slaves. Abraham Covenant with God

...Abrahams Covenant with God Abraham takes a great leap of faith with God. Abraham leaves behind everything to fulfill his covenant with God. Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12, 1-3). Abraham and God are entering into a covenant together, God is promising these things to Abraham and in return Abraham is promising his faith to God. God proves to Abraham that he will protect him, in Genesis 12, 17-20; 17 But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had. God is proving to Abraham that they are in this covenant together, God inflicted hardship onto the Pharaoh who had taken Abrahams wife as his own. Abraham’s wife was returned to him after the hardship God had placed on the Pharaoh. God reinforces his covenant with Abraham; Genesis 15, 18-21; 18...

Movie Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

...Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Movie Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Timur Bekmambetov is based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, which offers a vivid description of the untold story and secret life of the 16th president of America, Lincoln Benjamin Walker from his days as a boy to his presidency, which apparently shaped America as a nation. It often construed that many movie adaptions do not necessarily do justice to the well-written books that they are based on; however, in the case of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Timur Bekmambetov, it does quite well. The narrative of the movie takes the form of secret journal entries, in which Lincoln as a young boy reports witnessing the death of his mother at the hands a plantation owner who he claims was vampiric. As a result, he swears vengeance; and with the guidance and help of another hunter, Henry Sturgess, a role played by Dominic Cooper, Lincoln starts a life-long mission to find and destroy all the vampires lurking amongst humans, and they hold on the mortal society. After several years, Lincoln’s attraction towards politics, mostly fuelled and motivated by his belief that he had the opportunity and ability to make a difference in the mankind war, not as an assassin, but as a leader. We also witness Lincoln’s election, we see him signing the Emancipation Proclamation, and the outburst of the American Civil War. In addition, we also get to see how these abrupt changes in...
