Question 1: Case related to the COSO objectives, components, and principlesThe basis of internal control is founded by the objectives stated in COSO (2013), thus, it is necessary to identify them: First, the operational objective of the Absolutely Sure Insurance Company (AS) is especially dominated by financial performance goals, such as increasing sales. According to the case and related exhibits, AS was successful in achieving this aim. Secondly, in the case of reporting objectives one can see that AS conducted internal audits with the aim of providing non-financial information. The audits seemed to have reliable information, as they detected fraud in earlier stages, but this was simply ignored or not followed up by the management. The third objective of compliance with laws and other regulation cannot be properly determined with the information provided. According to KPMG's statement, it appeared to be not a main objective of the company, as the management was inconsistent in their doing and did not follow laws and regulation for customer protection.
To achieve the objectives, AS would have to make sure that components and principles are present and functioning. Yet, we determine that this is not the case: The control environment, as the basis of the other components, is not in place. The managers build up a corporate culture driven by sales with no place for ethic

Scenario

...SCENARIO PLANNING Scenario planning, also called scenario thinking or scenario analysis, is a strategic planning method that some organizations use to make flexible long-term plans. It is in large part an adaptation and generalization of classic methods used by military intelligence. The original method was that a group of analysts would generate simulation games for policy makers. The games combine known facts about the future, such as demographics, geography, military, political, industrial information, and mineral reserves, with plausible alternative social, technical, economic, environmental, educational, political and aesthetic (STEEEPA) trends which are key driving forces. In business applications, the emphasis on gaming the behavior of opponents was reduced (shifting more toward a game against nature). At Royal Dutch/Shell for example, scenario planning was viewed as changing mindsets about the exogenous part of the world, prior to formulating specific strategies. Scenario planning may involve aspects of Systems thinking, specifically the recognition that many factors may combine in complex ways to create sometime surprising futures (due to non-linear feedback loops). The method also allows the inclusion of factors that are difficult to formalize, such as novel insights about the future, deep shifts in values, unprecedented regulations or inventions. Systems thinking used in conjunction with scenario planning leads to plausible scenario story lines because the causal...

Fund Raising Notes

...Q1] what is the maximum permissible bank finance? As per the recommendations of Tandon Committee, corporates should be discouraged from accumulating too much of stocks of current assets and should move towards very lean inventories and receivable levels. The committee even suggested the maximum levels of Raw Material, Stock-in-process and Finished Goods which a corporate operating in an industry should be allowed to accumulate These levels were termed as inventory and receivable norms. Depending on the size of credit required, the funding of these current assets (working capital needs) of the corporates could be met by one of the following methods: · First Method of Lending: Banks can work out the working capital gap, i.e. total current assets less current liabilities other than bank borrowings (called Maximum Permissible Bank Finance or MPBF) and finance a maximum of 75 per cent of the gap; the balance to come out of long-term funds, i.e., owned funds and term borrowings. This approach was considered suitable only for very small borrowers i.e. where the requirements of credit were less than Rs.10 lacs · Second Method of Lending: Under this method, it was thought that the borrower should provide for a minimum of 25% of total current assets out of long-term funds i.e., owned funds plus term borrowings. A certain level of credit for purchases and other current liabilities will be available to fund the build up of current assets and the bank will provide the balance (MPBF)....

Lean Management

...THE ROLE OF LEAN MANUFACTURING AND LEAN TECHNIQUES IN THE SUCCESS OF AN ORGANIZATION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Requirements of this project were rather stringent as sufficient knowledge of the topic was not enough. It was also necessary to have abundance of devotion and willpower together with an ability and willingness to perform hard labour for successful completion of this project. It would be unfair on my part not to acknowledge the contribution of all those who had encouraged me all through and kept my spirits from flagging and that include my parents, friends and well wishers. These people, though not directly involved with the project, did most certainly provide the ambience that was sorely needed while undertaking such a strenuous task. I feel extremely fortunate that I had Mr/Ms Xxxx as my project leader and cannot thank him/her more for the unstinted encouragement I had received throughout this period. If his/her suggestions that resulted in necessary and timely course corrections were not there, I doubt very much whether this project would have at all seen the light of the day, let alone being successfully completed within the deadline. ABSTRACT The word that is most significant in Lean Manufacturing process is ‘lean’ which literally means a body or a system that does not have any unnecessary or avoidable flab or float. Such flab or float exists in manufacturing systems and are manifested through unnecessary or nil value movements or costs that do not add to the final...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
