...Academic Language Needs of English Language Learners Name Institution The development of reading and thinking abilities relates to oral language development. With this consideration, there is a possibility of enabling ELL students to use specialized language features by teaching them language construction, which also gives them a well-built foundation in English (Short and Echevarria, 2005). For this reason, some of the functional words that students should know and understand in order to master the curriculum include words such as bed, walk, look, clock, animal, insect, and radio. These words do not require extreme academic instruction since they are common expressions whose components are easy to understand. Conversely, some of the abstract words to consider include words such as fortunate, chance, coincidence, maintain, plot, setting, and between, among others. These are words that allow the students to connect some ideas that will enhance their language ability. It is vital to emphasize on learning and using these words frequently since they are necessary for language comprehension. By using word-smithing, a strategy suggested by Vanessa Girard, it is possible to teach the ELL students on the manner in which they can select words (Girard and Spycher, 2007). This involves the altercation of words in order to improve its precision in a sentence. For instance, many students use the word chance when in sentences that might...

...What characterises academic writing? It is perhaps tempting to think that Academic Writing (AW) is guided by a fairly homogeneous set of rules and aspects. This is so, possibly because we frequently see books with titles such as Academic Writing and Writing Academic English, and we hear from fellow students, teachers, colleagues and friends about the need for skills within written academic English. However, even if there arguably are core aspects and skills, it is important to acknowledge the fact that many differences exist when it comes to how certain disciplines grapple the challenges of writing academic discourse. The question, then, is whether we should rather talk about Academic Writings, to highlight this heterogeneity. A General Approach Indeed, in the debate on teaching approaches to Academic Writing (AW), there are proponents of a more generalised stance. The advocates of such an approach argue that there are commonalities across academic writing and that a number of core skills can and should be taught (see e.g. Bloor & Bloor, 1986). These core skills could have to do with features of academic prose and text-type patterns that recur in academic writing across disciplines. One of the more frequently proposed arguments in favour of a generalised approach is the lack of subject knowledge and expertise among writing instructors. Such lack of knowledge places restrictions on what can be taught and consequently focus should be placed on more broad principles. Examples...

...attempt to search for academic honest in higher learning using search engines, little was found. When I first said searching, I decided to use google.com and ask.com as my search engines. I decided to look for academic honesty in higher learning (in its entirety). I had more luck with my findings when I used google.com than when I used ask.com. I picked a few websites that sounded like they'd be useful when writing a paper on the topic. The first two that I chose to visit were findarticles.com and wiki.answers.com. Wiki.answers.com literally gave a one sentence definition of what is believed to be academic dishonesty. Findarticles.com gave a short and simple description on academic dishonesty in online courses and provided a few links to articles about academic dishonesty. Those articles gave very little information on plagiarism and other terms defining academic dishonesty. One of the articles only informed a person about using correct citations in a paper and it was only six to eight sentences long. As with google.com, ask.com provided many links to many different colleges and academic institutions. I'm looking for academic integrity, not links to colleges, or links to different colleges' guidelines on their ideas on academic integrity (although they could somewhat prove to be useful). One thing that I was hoping for were statistics (real case studies) on academic dishonesty in higher learning. I did a search using ask.com for statistics on academic dishonesty. A lot...
