...that I find a certain level of success. Failure is not an option for me, whether it is knowing that my parents want, or need, to live vicariously through my achievements, a dream of giving my children more than what I had growing up, or my need for a sense of fulfillment. In my past attempt to get my degree, I didn't approach the situation the way I should have - I didn't have a game plan. Learning has always come easy to me, so I just assumed that I could glide right through like I had done since kindergarten. I was wrong. The possibility of failure that I had completely dismissed became very real. I was embarrassed and and wondered just what my future would hold for me without my degree. Now, in my second attempt at Phoenix, I know that there are certain essential practices that I will need to reply to reach the level of success I want to see. The main factors that will aid in my academic success are setting goals for myself using specific learning style and abilities, developing my writing skills using resources provided by the university and other credible sources beyond the university, and a complete understanding of the importance of academic integrity. Setting goals have been proven to improve performance on any task. When a student sets goals for his/herself and then is successful in reaching those goals, they feel better about themselves and about their capabilities, and thus continue to set and accomplish goals throughout their academic career (Morisano et. al. 2010)...

Essay On Academic Success

...My Plan for Academic Success Nick W Are we truly prepared for any possible event that may happen in our future? If I were to gauge my academic success so far, I’d probably give it a 7/10. This is because while my freshman year was amazing, and I did well for that year, my sophomore year was terrible, pessimistic and depressing. I did the bare minimum of everything that was assigned to me, and what I did do was terribly prepared and the effort that was put in was the bare minimum as well. But, as I did poorly, I still managed to obtain decent grades. Even though I was depressed, I still managed to gather the energy to be at least somewhat better at the subjects I did like. But all in all I must say I do not like school. The major problem...

...Continuing Academic Success Joseph La Corte GEN/201 12/1/2014 Portia Dennis Continuing Academic Success Despite the time needed and money spent, returning to school as an adult is never a bad idea due to the opportunities it can present. If approached with an open mind the idea of returning to school, while daunting, is easily justified. A person who feels stuck, spinning their tires so to speak, can go back to school to gain more traction by learning new skills and earning a degree. It’s not supposed to be simple, in fact, approximately 60% of undergraduates attend more than one college while earning a bachelor’s degree (Kinser & Deitchman, 2007), but with determination and persistence it can be done. Setting Goals Goals can be set by being honest with oneself. What do I want to achieve in this endeavor? What are the real reasons for my enrollment in school? (Callin, 1983) My particular goals are, like many others, based on financial success. I want to be comfortable. I want to be able to provide for my family, and when I have children of my own I want my wife to have the option of not working. How do I do that without getting a degree? The answer for me was no. So I decided then I would set an educational goal for myself, to earn my bachelor’s degree. After selecting my degree I set a professional goal of becoming an IT specialist or programmer, more specifically a mobile applications developer. These goals will serve as a driving force for me in school. Critical...

Academic Success of Working Student

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM Introduction There is no greater financial investment in one’s future than a college degree. It is the only way for sustained personal and professional success. It makes lasting changes in the lives of those who seek it. Earning a college degree is such an important step in life that it has become a central part of the “Filipino Dream”. Go to college, get a job, buy a house, and raise a family. It may not always be that simple, but it all starts with your college education and yes, it changes people’s stories. Earning a college degree is all about opening up opportunities in life. It prepares you, both intellectually and socially, for your career and your adult life. A college education can open many doors in a person’s search for a career. People that have attained a college degree are hired in at a higher pay and are considered to be much more employable. This means that a college graduate would be more likely to be offered employment than another who did not attend college or did not attain a degree. College will also assist in preparing a person for a career in a particular field. In a vast majority of highly specialized jobs, if one does not have a college degree, there is little to no possibility of securing a career in that chosen field. College will give a person the tools to succeed in the field of their choice. These tools would not be available to most people who do not attend college.  However, all of this benefits of having...

Proper education and learning the core fundamentals of our major is very important, but without learning about how we learn as individuals and exposing ourselves to all of the services the university has to offer we may not be as successful as we can be. Short term goals will always help bring us to our long term goal without it becoming overwhelming and working toward that goal one step at a time. One way to help achieve a short term goal of succeeding academically is the writing process. Getting your thoughts on paper, completing...

...Academic Success 1 Each year about 2.75 million students enroll in a 4 year degree program at a university. On average 33 percent of these students drop out within their first two years of school. Academic success is an ongoing effort and can be a struggle for many students that have outside factors affecting their ability to attend school. Following a few simple steps can help students manage their lifestyle and continue academic success. Goal setting, thinking critically, understanding the writing process, and decision making are all steps to continuing academic success and avoiding road blocks. The first step to continuing academic success is goal setting. Setting S.M.A.R.T goals or goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely can help make a huge endeavor seem attainable. Psychologist Camille Rodriquez states that “any goals that students set should be meaningful to them, not just words on paper.” Students that take the time to truly understand what they want to accomplish and set goals to get them there are 83 percent more likely to achieve that goal. According to a study at the University of Michigan 70 percent of college students drop out because of lack of time and being burned out. Setting small attainable goals can help keep a student focused on something small that may not be as daunting as four years of school. Setting goals can help with time management and avoid the dreaded burned out feeling...

...Academic Success: A Road Paved by your Own Decisions While there are many factors that will contribute to your college education, holding yourself personally responsible is the most important. It is your name on the assignments, you make the decisions on how to spend time, and it is your work ethic that will determine the level of success you achieve. There could come a time when you will be asked to work in a team environment, but even then you are responsible for a portion of the team’s accomplishments or short falls. The days of spoon fed answers and hands held are over, now is the time to stand alone and accept responsibility. Ron Haskins, a former White House and congressional advisor, describes personal responsibility as “the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards” (para. 1). Standards are set by society for every aspect of our lives, punctuality at work, obeying laws, and even general conduct in public. It is the job of the individual to both recognize the standard, and then to meet those standards. That only partially describes personal responsibility. It is not enough to meet standards, but to take responsibility for failures as well (Haskins, 2012). An individual must take control of the available time and opportunities that they are given on a daily basis, while at the same time accepting the consequences of their decisions...

...Continuing Academic Success Essay John Smith GEN 201 Continuing Academic Success Essay Even though you're scared of academic failure, make sure you know yourself because knowing what your goals are and how to accomplish them and to know what resources are available will help you succeed. Going back to school can be terrifying, especially after being out school for so long. You, like myself, are probably telling yourself that you can’t do it. You haven’t been in school in so long; things have changed so much. We all hate the thought of failure; the truth is you won’t know until you try. There are things you can do to help yourself prepare for returning to school, and I’m going to go over some that I have learned along the way. The most important thing you need to know when returning to school is yourself. You can’t be successful if you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses. By taking a look at yourself, you can get a grasp on what areas of learning you might struggle with and what part of learning should come easy. There are many factors that can influence how we learn. These factors can include your behavioral characteristics, how much life experience you have, which of your senses are most predominant and whether or not you are self-directed in your learning (Reuter, 2000). For instance, I know that I need to be shown a few times, then I need just to dive in and try it myself. If I don’t get that hands on experience, all the telling me in the world doesn’t...
