Paragraph Writing

Paragraph #1:

Purpose: Describe
Write a complete paragraph about a person who has influenced you in positive ways. Focus on at least one way in which this person has made an important impact upon you. Use specific ideas and examples to illustrate your points and make sure to refer to the Paragraph Structure chart located at the end of the Unit 4 Reading. Include a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion (minimum 5 complete sentences).

There have been many people who have influenced various aspects of my life and career; based on their values, characteristics and commitment. Out of all the people that I’ve encountered, the person that stands out the most, who has influenced me in a positive way; has been my first “Supervisor”.
In the five years that I have known and reported to her, she helped me to enhance my attributes in financial reporting within the healthcare company we worked for. One of my responsibilities was to analyze the finances and report them to senior management. During my tenure with my supervisor; she taught me how to navigate and understand the process of the financial reporting within the healthcare company, relative to our work. Nonetheless, with this new knowledge and understanding; my reporting was much more structured, precise and accurate.
As a result, this has impacted my career throughout the healthcare industry and has since made me more successful.

Paragraph #2:

Purpose: Share an Opinion
Write a complete paragraph about the advantages and disadvantages of taking online classes. Use specific ideas and examples to illustrate your points and make sure to refer to the Paragraph Structure chart located at the end of the Unit 4 Reading. Include a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion (minimum 5 complete sentences).

There are some advantages and disadvantages for online education. Balancing career and family life can both be rewarding and detrimental to a student’s continuing education. In other words, online learning works very well for some students, and not so great for others.

The advantage of an online education will give the student both time and geographical flexibility in dealing with their busy lifestyles while learning in any location. This is great for working people and parents with young children. Also, online classes do not require commuting, thus saving both gas money and time. However, in a traditional class room setting, the student’s schedules are prearranged. A student is expected to physically attend classes and just dedicating that time is impossible.

A huge disadvantage is the lack of direct interaction with the instructor. In a traditional classroom you have the opportunity to hear questions and participate in direct interactive classroom discussions with both faculty and students. Many students may not do as well due to the lack of direct contact and interaction from their instructors. Another disadvantage is the mandatory efficiencies in managing their time. Online students are fully responsible for learning on their own time and schedule, however, for the students that procrastinates; an online education may be detrimental for them.

The student that participates in online studies must be able to stay focus and maintain many different perspectives in balancing their education, work and family.
