Acc/290 Week 5 Summary

...` Team A Weekly Reflection Summary ACC 290 May 6, 2013 Mike Arnone In 2002, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was enacted because of several high profile companies conducting shady accounting practices. The bankruptcy of Enron in 2001 totaling $62 billion in assets financially crippled employees and retirees of the Enron Corporation. The shear lack of attention and respect of the accounting system by corporate officers of Enron had to be addressed. Several things where put in place to ensure this type of financial disaster would not happen again. The internal control principles are the primary control solutions. The corporate officers are required to review, approve, and sign off on all financial statements. SOX has affects the practice of accounting because it lead to the creation of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), whose role is to oversee and inspect the audits and auditors of public companies (Nichols, 2009). SOX make the manager’s responsible for financial reporting. For public companies, it requires the Corporate Executive Office (CEO) and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to certify the statements that have to be submitted to the SEC. The Act also requires that all of the public companies have to issue a report on internal control, acknowledging management’s responsibility for maintaining controls and assessing the effectiveness of the company’s internal control structure and procedures. (Nichols, 2009). SOX requires all United States (U.S...

Comparing Ifrs to Gaap Paper

...Comparing IFRS to GAAP ACC/290 June 5, 2016 Arin Smith Comparing IFRS to GAAP As international business increase those with financial responsibilities should be well versed in the two primary accounting methods: GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). The Financial Accounting Standards Board set the GAAP which is primarily used in the United States and the IFRS is used in several other countries. It has been reported that the United States Security and Exchange Commission is planning to switch to IFRS in 2015 (Logue, 2011). While the two accounting methods share some similarities, there are some differences that could result in different reporting. Having a good understanding of both methods will allow companies to make business decisions that are effective and compliant. IFRS 2-1: In what ways does the format of a statement of financial or position under IFRS often differ from a balance sheet presented under GAAP? In my understanding, the IFRS does not give any specific order for the statement of financial position. If anything the, IFRS requires separation of current and noncurrent assets and liabilities. For a lot of the companies today they just report their assets in reverse order based off their liquidity. Now, the GAAP recommends separation of current and noncurrent assets and liabilities and also. require that all the accounts be in a specific ordered based on the liquidities hierarchy. IFRS 2-2:...

Accrual vs Cash

...Differences of Accrual and Cash Basis Cesar Roldan ACC/290 3/9/2014 Walter A. Corrigan Introduction Accounting and bookkeeping is part of the foundation to any business, small or large, family business or public corporation, accounting is necessary. Before invemtory takes place, before any transations are processed the business must determine what basis suits the business better, the accrual basis or the cash basis. Deciding what basis to use is simple after understanding their functions and how it can influence the business bookkeeping. One of the main differences between these two basis is the timing of when transactions are recorded, in accrual basis the transaction or revenue is recorded at the time the transaction is made whether there was any cash payment involved or not. In cash basis transactions are recorded only when payment is final, or when cash is paid out. “For example: Let's say you own a business that sells machinery. If you sell $5,000 worth of machinery, under the cash method, that amount is not recorded in the books until the customer hands you the money or you receive the check. Under the accrual method, the $5000 is recorded as revenue immediately when the sale is made, even if you receive the money a few days or weeks later. The same thing occurs for expenses. If you get an electric bill for $1700, under the cash method, the amount is not added to the books until you actually pay the bill. However, under the accrual method, the $1700 is recorded...
