Auditing standards note that three conditions are generally present when fraud occurs. Research the authoritative standards for auditors and provide a brief summary of each of the three fraud conditions. Additionally, provide an example from the Comptronix fraud of each of the three fraud conditions.
The Fraud Triangle is one of the most well-known theories, taking a look at motivation, opportunity, and rationalization. The first factor, motivation, can also be seen as an incentive or pressure. Motivation can include personal failures, gaining status, or poor relations between an employer and employee. The second factor of the fraud triangle, opportunity, builds upon an individual’s desire and pressure to commit fraud. Without a perceived opportunity to do so, the individual most likely will not act upon his or her motivation. An opportunity can be the awareness of the company’s poor internal controls and the individual’s access to the information, as well as the technical skills needed to actually commit fraud. Rationalization, the third aspect of the fraud triangle, revolves around how the individual justifies committing fraud. Usually, individuals who commit fraud are first time offenders, so rationalization plays a key component. Examples range from unfair treatment, to the intent to reverse the fraud after some time.
With regards to the Comptronix fraud, the three individuals who committed fraud are Hebding (chairman and CEO), Shifflett (president and COO), and Medlin (controller and treasurer). Looking at the three fraud conditions, their motivation may have stemmed from the loss of a key customer in 1989 to their previous employer, SCI, keeping up with their high status and reputation, bonuses, and poor personal relationships. Secondly, the executives all had the opportunity to commit fraud. With their high and multiple positions, they controlled the

10 Major Accounting Scandals

...Unraveling the Details of 10 High-Profile Accounting Scandals written by: ciel s cantoria • edited by: Linda Richter • updated: 12/30/2010 Before digging into the dirty details of each of these major accounting scandals, we’ll take a look at some of the tools that were used to first detect them – including sophisticated accounting systems and advancements in high-tech communication. Technology Fighting Against White Collar Fraud Looking back at the 10 major accounting scandals that changed the business world, it was noted that most of their unraveling came about during the turn of the new millennium, which was a time when the American trade and industries were beginning to experience the benefits and detriments of high-tech computerization. Information storage and communication became sophisticated, which made possible the compilation of hordes of information in an instant. Recording and verification of accounting transactions in realtime were made easier and more accurate, which facilitated the reconciliation of supporting documents versus sources, with very little effort needed. Federal regulators were provided with data that revealed the corrupt practices of high-profile companies and their CEOs. Their bankruptcies became inevitable as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and financial analysts began to see the signs of irregularities among numerous companies. When the SEC ordered the restatement of their financial reports in accordance with the GAAP rules, it...

...Virtual Lab Demonstrating the Scientific Method SCIE207-1302B-06 Biology Lab American Intercontinental University Purpose: To determine how added nitrogen affects the growth in arable and non-arable soils. Introduction: Nitrogen is known by others to be the main component that is most likely to limit growth in several ordinary terrestrial and marine ecosystems (Vitousek & Howarth, 1991). Arable soil is the perfect kind of soil used in agriculture that allows a variety of crops to grow (M.U.S.E., 2010). Hypothesis: It is determined that plants only grow on arable land when receiving an adequate amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Methods: To get my lab results I started with the introduction video titled Using the Scientific Method. At the end of the video a table appeared which represented the amount of mineral nitrogen fertilization. To gather data for the Arable soil, and the Nonarable Sandy Loam soil this following process was taken, in step 1 I clicked on the amount of mineral nitrogen which started with 0, and then I clicked the Arable Soil button which gave me the amount of yield of maize. I clicked the Nonarable Sandy Loam Soil button to get the amount of yield of maize. I repeated this step 1 process from the chart that is measure in multiplies of 20, up to 180. After gathering this information I filled in the lab report with the number of yield of maize for each amount of mineral nitrogen for the Arable and Nonarable soil. Results: This...

Advanced Accounting Chapter 10

...Chapter 15 Partnerships: termination and liquidation Answers to Questions 1. A dissolution refers to the cessation of a partnership. In many cases, this process is simply a preliminary step in the transfer of business property to a newly formed partnership. Therefore, a dissolution does not necessarily affect the operations of the business. In a liquidation, however, actual business activities must cease. Partnership property is sold with the remaining cash distributed to creditors and to any partners with positive capital balances. Dissolution refers to changes in the composition of a partnership whereas liquidation is the selling of a partnership's assets. 2. Many reasons can exist that would lead to the termination and liquidation of a partnership. The business might simply have failed to generate sufficient profits or the partners may elect to enter other lines of work. Liquidation can also be required by the death, retirement, or withdrawal of one of the partners. In such cases, liquidation is often necessary to settle the partner's interest in the business. The bankruptcy of an individual partner can also force the termination of the business as can the bankruptcy of the partnership itself. 3. During the liquidation process, monitoring the balance of the partners' capital accounts becomes of paramount importance. That amount will eventually indicate either the cash to be received by the partners as final distributions or the additional contributions...

Management Accounting Chapter 10 Decentralization

...Chapter 10 Decentralization Solutions to Questions 10-1 In a decentralized organization, decision-making isn’t confined to a few top executives, but rather is spread throughout the organization with managers at various levels making key decisions relating to their own spheres of responsibilities. 10-2 The benefits of decentralization include: (1) relieving top management from day-to-day problem solving and allowing them to focus their time on broader issues; (2) training lower-level managers in decision making, thereby preparing them to assume greater responsibility; (3) greater job satisfaction and greater incentive for lower-level managers; (4) better decisions, since decisions are made at the level where the problem is likely to be best understood; and (5) a more effective basis for measuring managerial performance through the creation of profit and investment centers. 10-3 A cost center is any responsibility center whose manager has control over cost, but not revenue or investment funds. A profit center manager, by contrast, has control over both cost and revenue. An investment center manager has control over cost and revenue and investment funds. 10-4 A segment is any part or activity of an organization about which management seeks cost or revenue data.
