Strategic Management

...Course Description This course introduces the concepts, tools, and first principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis. It is concerned with managerial decisions and actions that materially affect the success and survival of business enterprises. The course focuses on the information, analyses, organizational processes, skills, and business judgment managers must use to design strategies, position their businesses and assets, and define firm boundaries, to maximize long-term profits in the face of uncertainty and competition. Strategic Management (BUAD 497) is an integrative and interdisciplinary course in two important respects: 1. The course assumes a broad view of the environment that includes competitors, buyers/consumers, suppliers, technology, economics, capital markets, and government both locally and globally. It assumes that the external environment is dynamic and characterized by uncertain changes. In studying strategy, this course draws together and builds on all the ideas, concepts, and theories from your functional courses such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, and Statistics. However, it is much more than a mere integration of the functional specialties within a firm. 2. The course takes a general management perspective. It views the firm as a whole, and examines how policies in each functional area are integrated into an overall competitive strategy. We designed this course to develop...

We have a more highly educated workforce, yet face diminishing resources with an increased demand for productivity, and the essential services we provide to the American public. To be successful at navigating these challenges leaders must develop the essential skills to motivate their employees, effectively communicate with others, fine-tune critical thinking skills, and build and leverage partnerships. Future leaders must also be visionary; i.e., possess the ability to identify trends and the courage to be innovative. Being technically adept in your field will no longer be enough. In response to these demands on senior executives, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management identified five Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) that all aspiring government leaders and executives must possess. These ECQs and Fundamental Competencies were developed by OPM after extensive research on the attributes of successful executives in both the private and public sector. ...Industrial Project Management: A Handbook of Planning, Scheduling & Evaluation Techniques Dr. Miltiadis A. Boboulos Eng. Lazar Peshev Chapter 1 Decision modelling in management 1.1. Decision Modelling Modelling decisions in management is a process of developing models reflecting the interrelations between relevant factors in a real situation. The model is reality presented in a simplified form. Modelling is a specific method and means of comprehension. It is applied in company management to study various activity alternatives using developed models. Every individual model comprises various components, variables, parameters, relations, limitations and criteria [1]. • Components correspond to the elements of the system under study. • Variables are used to describe the relations between individual components of the model. They can have more than a single value [2]. • Parameters characterize the influence that various variables have in the model. They are constant for every individual model, i.e. they have just a single value [2]. • Relations reflect the links, relations and interaction between various components, variables and parameters in the model [3]. • Limitations point out the variation limits and can be either placed in space and time, can be single-value or multi-value, one-sided or double-sided, global or local, etc [4]. • Criteria are means of evaluation, comparison and selection.
