2. Active listening is something that I struggle with, not because I am uninterested or do not care but because I lack confidence in myself. I am worried about what I am going to say in response. For example this week one of my coworkers was talking to me about one of her past jobs, her life and why she had moved around so much. I did, and often to consciously give effort to not have distractions. I am good at giving the person my full attention and tend to be have lots of open body language. I ask a lot of questions and responded appropriately “wow I can’t imagine” and “well I am glad you ended up here with us” were two responses that I utilized during the conversation. One of the other issues that I have is fidgeting, I have to be moving my fingers or taping my foot. It’s a bad habit and I have tried to curb …show more content…
I choose to write about the 4-H group that I am in. The scenario: The family wanted to have a reunion at the 4-H Camp and she sent in her money and sent out invitations. Meanwhile the date was already booked but she had asked a board member so she thought everything was good. However, the date was double booked by mistake. So once the mistake was figured out we sent back her money and apologized for the mistake however that was not enough in her opinion. She immediately wanted to go to court over it. We tried to talk it out with her and offered to give her the date and cancel the other party but by that time it was to late she had already hired a representative. I feel as though his could and should have been handled through mediation of some sort. Brainstorming a solution to the issue would have been great, the 4-h agent of Marion County is very open minded and kind, she would have tried hard to make this woman happy and to rebuild a relationship rather than have a tarnished record. Through my ministry experiences with those of the elderly population, two aspects of active listening have shaped my interactions; I never complete a sentence unless specifically asked, and I listen attentively rather than plan my response. In active listening one should be comfortable with silence; allowing that silence to fill the room while the speaker contemplates their message or searches for just the right word is important in allowing the speaker to feel authentically and fully heard.
