...Understanding Phonemic Awareness and Phonics for K-3 Instruction Grand Canyon University: RDG 512 August 27, 2014 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to gain an understanding of how phonemic awareness and phonics impacts reading and writing for beginning readers. A definition of both phonemic awareness and phonics will be given as well as strategies to teach both. Developmental stages, appropriate ages for teaching these skills and strategies, and the purpose of both will be explained. Different assessment options will also be discussed. Introduction Children begin learning sounds and words from the time they are born. They are even exposed to hearing their mother’s voice while still in the womb. It is important that children are exposed to letters and words at an early age as well as have books read to them. These are factors in learning how to read. Two of the most important elements that emerging readers need to know in order to successfully read are phonemic awareness and phonics. These two concepts are different, but must work as a team for one to read. Another way would be for the teacher to use some hands on activities for Doug during group reading time. There is also the fact that the teacher could also have the whole class get up and stand in one spot on the circle carpet and act out the story during story time. In South-east Peru located in the Amazon Rainforest is The Posada Amazonas eco-lodge. It’s situated in a national reserve called Tambopata that conserves 275,000 hectares of land. It’s a sustainable eco-lodge in that only small-scale development is allowed here, so all activities helping development for tourism is not going to exploit the natural resources. The land and the lodge are owned by the local indigenous community of Infierno, who are in partnership with Rainforest Expeditions who are a Peruvian company. The 30-roomed lodge allows tourists to view the nature around them, and with doing so this boosts the local economy, yet still protecting the environment as there are only 40-50 visitors arriving by small boats at a time. The construction of the lodge allowed people to have jobs in building and designing the area, furthermore, the lodge was constructed with local natural materials, avoiding the use of non-renewable material and instead using recyclable material where possible. There was a girl in Massachusetts named Phoebe Prince that after being bullied for months went home after school on January 14, 2010 and committed suicide by hanging herself. She just couldn’t take it anymore. Prior to this, the school where she went did little in the ways of anti-bullying education. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, “In 2007, about 32 percent of 12- to 18-year-old students reported having been bullied at school during the school year and 4 percent reported having been cyber-bullied”(“Indicator 11”). Our children are dying due to being bullied at school. My own children have gone through being bullied at school. My twelve-year-old was bullied to the point of being physically injured. The College Gamer Recent data from UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute provides useful information about video game usage on college campuses. The data show that most college students have played video games, many play them regularly, and a small percentage use them as a primary means of entertainment and leisure. In the 2009 Freshman Survey, around 1% of respondents admitted to playing over 20 hours of videogames per week. Over 35% of the respondents stated that they play at least one hour per week. There is an enormous gender disparity in the amount of time spend on videogames. While less than 1 in 50 incoming freshmen women played more than 10 hours of videogames per week, 1 in 10 males admitted to doing this (UCLA Higher Education Research Institute, 2009).
