Uptown glamour, affordable prices
This advertisement I choose is an ad for New York Color (NYC) makeup. This ad was from a teen fashion magazine. Anything glamorous gets my attention. Also, I really like makeup. So this ad really caught my eye. With the target audience being women, this ad in many ways makes the product appealing to female consumers who love an expensive look but want an affordable price tag. This ad uses details such as bold colors, wording, and layout, and strategies such as the lighting, affordability and attractiveness to persuade the target audience to choose their product over another. This ad uses details such a variety of bold colors to make the ad attractive and in order to make the consumer stop and take a second to look at it. The color makes the ad look very appealing and stand out in a crowd-in this case, stand out in a magazine with many other advertisements throughout the pages. One example is the products brand logo at the bottom left of the page “NYC”, each letter is in a different color. One letter is blue, another letter is yellow and the other letter is a bold hot pink. Inside the letters is part of New York City’s city scenery to emphasize the brands name of New York Color. Another example of the ads use of color is the way the makeup is displayed on the models in the ads faces. Bold red lips and bright eyes, really catches the consumers eye directly to the product. The stylist of this ad made sure that the right makeup went on the faces of the models to show just how good the products of the brand NYC are.
Wording is another detail this ad uses to sell its product to the consumer. There is minimal wording, so it’s important it says what it needs to say and sells the brand. In big white letter near the bottom left of the page, it says “UPTOWN STYLE, DOWN-TO-EARTH PRICES. From 99¢ to $4.99”. Also, the words “NEW” on the

Anywhere from using a short video advertisement to just using a simple picture. Every company has been known to do it and it is not just because it is fun to do. They do it for one simple reason. To get somebody or something’s attention. One ad that seems to be very attention getting is by an organization called The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF). They do a great job of using the three most well-known forms of advertisement, which are ethos, pathos, and logos. Throughout this paper the advertisement and how these three appeals are used will be described. Now let me explain to you how CDF uses ethos, pathos, and logos to attempt to help prevent teen pregnancy in their advertisement. First, let me explain what ethos is. In advertising, ethos is essentially having credibility to what you are advertising. The CDF does a great job of using ethos in this advertisement. For example, the CDF uses a quote at the bottom of the picture that says, “Being a teenager is tough enough. Why make things more difficult by becoming a mother too?” It says this right below the stomach of a pregnant teen girl. In order to conduct a data-driven study, the author builds a corpus of 60 English advertisements. It is hoped that through the detailed survey of three types of advertisements: namely, daily consumer goods ads, technical equipment ads, service ads, similarities and differences in advertising language features can be summarized and possible reasons will be given in the light of the meaning, and function of language. This paper will be presented in five parts. The first part is the introduction and the last conclusion. The focus of the paper is laid on the three middle parts which respectively analyze language features at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. The conclusion of this paper is drawn from the data analysis.
