Adil, who values family and tending it, believes in static sumud which is a more passive way of resisting by adapting to the difficulties of life under Israeli occupation. His idea of resistance is surviving and not surrendering and leaving. Adil has to support the family and talks much about having to care for his father’s kidney machine. Adil first talks about the nation as a lost cause, reaching in vain of hope.“The entire nation [drowns] while the radio goes on spewing out songs of hope and freedom” (Khalifeh 61).
