Introduction

What exactly are reasonable accommodations and how does a person qualify? At some point in time, employees may need further assistance in the workplace. Problems may come up at work and outside of work. It is important that the employee communicates with management in regards to seeking the help they need. Reasonable accommodations can help an employee to better perform in the workplace. In some instances, an employee may need to care for a family member and it is important that the employee communicates with management to request leave as soon as possible. It is also important that employers understand their requirements in providing reasonable accommodations and leave requests by keeping up to date with the current laws and company regulations. As technology advances so does the need for higher productivity in the workplace. In the growing population and aging workforce, some people think that if they ask for a reasonable accommodation that there may be retaliation from fellow co-workers or management. Reasonable accommodation may include but not limited to: ergonomic equipment and leave options. Our body does not advance and change as technology does but there is equipment out there that can make it easier to function. These available resources do come at a price and to determine who pays for the equipment to help employees with their disabilities can be difficult.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

In the past several years, laws have changes vastly to adjust to the changing times. The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law that has helped people with disabilities from being discriminated against (ADA-Guide for Small Business, 2012). According to Akin and Gump, Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) helps to protect qualified individuals with disabilities from discrimination…...

Adjustment Bureau

...Culture Alert “The Adjustment Bureau” leaves its audience entertained, however it also gives them something of great significance to discuss and think about. The movie broadly addresses concepts of predestination, free-will, and to what some would view as God. Although “The Adjustment Bureau” does not reflect a biblically view of God and his nature, however the movie does a nice job of demonstrating the importance of these issues. Throughout this paper I will explore the worldviews in correlation with Ravi Zacharias’ components presented in this film, and discuss my views and opinions on the issues portrayed. Having a consistent worldview can often be challenging with the different influences in life, therefore seeing a consistent worldview in a movie can be difficult. “The Adjustment Bureau” relates to “free-will” concept that philosophers have debated for years. David, the main character, is a politician running for Senate. His campaign is going really well until a photo from college is leaked to the media of him. David also meets a woman, Elise, and immediately falls in love. Elise inspires him in many ways and he even gives a very impressing speech. David soon realizes that his choices are not his own and the direction of his life is not under his control after he tries to start a relationship with Elise. His life direction is decided by a higher power. David actually accidently sees a mysterious group of men, “the adjustment bureau”, performing mind manipulation......

Adjustment

...Adjustment to Health Change or Crisis This essay will discuss a patient that I worked with during year two of my course, who has experienced a health change. I will also explore the psychological, social and physical changes to the patient and how adjustment was used on her lifestyle. Corsini (2002,p 20) defines Adjustment as “ Modifications of attitudes and behaviour to meet the demands of life effectively, such as carrying on constructive interprofessional relations, dealing with stressful problematic situations”. In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Councils Code of Conduct (NMC, 2009) to protect my patient’s confidentiality, I will refer to the patient as Margret and her husband as Charles. Margret is a 62-year-old lady who is a recently retired shop owner. She has been married for 40 years to Charles. Margret lives with her husband in a 2- bed bungalow. Margret and Charles have three sons. The sons live abroad but Margret has regular contact with them via the Internet and telephone. Margret has no other close family around her. Margret is an active lady and enjoys walking, swimming and other light exercise. Margret had attended a Doctor’s appointment at her local General Practice (G.P.) as she had not attended a check up for well over 30 years. Margret has no other medical problems and has reported to feel fit and well, with no concerns. The Doctor decided to perform a full health check and take a urine sample. The urine sample had detected glucose.......

Proposal of Fiscal Adjustment

...the west have to use fiscal adjustments in order to get their public finances straight. In this paper we want to establish which lessons can be learned from the past when it comes to conducting successful fiscal adjustments. While not looking at the factors which contribute to the appearance of a fiscal adjustment, we will focus on the factors which influence the success of the adjustment. Examples of these factors are revenue increases, cuts in government spending, the debt-to-GDP ratio and some political variables. In general, each factor accounts for one hypothesis. The paper which comes closest to ours is the one of Alesina et al. (1998). It deals with the success of fiscal adjustments. The authors found that expenditure cuts are more effective than an increase in government revenues. Papers as for example the one of McDermott and Wescott (1996) also focus on this aspect and investigate the question whether fiscal adjustments result in periods of small or even negative economic growth. However, the prevailing research has only been focusing on one type of fiscal adjustments. We think that the distinction between rapid and gradual fiscal adjustments can be of important use to prove existing research findings or even indicate new insights in the topic of the fiscal economy. De Haan et al. (2007) took the aspect of gradual adjustments into account, by concentrating on the impact of factors on the appearance of rapid and gradual fiscal adjustments. In this research, we use......

Audit Adjustments

...Audit Adjustments.  Jose A. Santos Nov. 19, 2013. Audit adjustments are proposed corrections of the financial statements that may not have been detected except through the audit procedures, regardless whether or not recorded by the entity. (www.wikiterm.com) According to AU Sec.380, Communication with Audit Committees, the auditor should inform the audit committee about adjustments arising from the audit that could, in his judgment, either individually or in the aggregate, have a significant effect on the entity's financial reporting process. Whether or not recorded by the entity, an audit adjustment is a proposed correction of the financial statements that, in the auditor's judgment, may not have been detected except through the auditing procedures performed. Matters underlying adjustments proposed by the auditor but not recorded by the entity could potentially cause future financial statements to be materially misstated, even though the auditor has concluded that the adjustments are not material to the current financial statements. The purpose of a financial audit is to add credibility to the assertions by a company’s management that its financial statements are fairly represented and free of material misstatements. An audit is not designed to provide absolute assurance but rather to reduce the risk of material misstatements whether caused by error or fraud. More specifically, a material misstatement is defined as “an error or omission that would affect the users...

Workplace

...Workplace Paper Week 2, MGT/308 Cova, Luis The workplace in America has changed substantially in the last 35 years. Many organizations that were once primarily staffed with white associates now employ people from of various ethnicities in large numbers. The change gradually occurred overtime; initiated by laws like Executive Order 11246 better known as affirmative action, which required federal contractors to hire employees without regard to race, religion or national origin. Although the law was implemented to target hiring practices of federal contractors it was eventually amended to include companies in the private sector as well. Although Affirmative Action laws were met with resistance initially, and still remains a controversial topic within companies today; many organizations are more open accepting of multicultural make up of their associates than ever before. Today some companies have created departments that are structured to managing diversity within an organization. Some companies have also implemented mandatory diversity training aimed at increasing awareness among all demographics within the organization. As things have progressed, opposed to trying to keep......

Portfolio Adjustments

...Assume you are the manager of a $100 million portfolio of corporate bonds and you believe interest rates will fall. What adjustments should you make to your portfolio based on your beliefs? As the manager of a $100 million portfolio of corporate bonds, I believe that interest rates are going to fall. Knowing that “bond prices and interest rates always move in opposite directions” (Ross, S. A., Westerfield, R., & Jordan, B. D., 2013), I realize that this anticipated decline in interest rates will cause the present value of the bond’s remaining cash flow to rise, and the bond value to rise. With this, this would cause the $100 million portfolio of bonds I manage to have a coupon rate higher than that of the market rate, and for them to be worth more than that of their face values. As such, these bonds would be considered to be premium bonds, and investors would be “willing to pay a premium to get this extra coupon amount” (Ross, S. A., Westerfield, R., & Jordan, B. D., 2013). Based on my beliefs, an adjustment I should make to my portfolio would be to sell some of the shorter duration bonds I currently manage, and purchase more with longer times to maturity. Because long duration bonds are more sensitive to interest rate changes, the more the interest rates fluctuate, the more change I should expect to see in the bond’s value. And, with my belief that interest rates are going to fall, the longer the times to maturity that the bonds in the portfolio I manage have,......

Psychological Adjustments to Aging

...Psychological Adjustments to Aging This paper will cover the ongoing changes one makes from early adulthood to middle adulthood. All the trials and tribulations that ensue when taking that next journey into adulthood will be addressed. They can include emotional and personal development; physical changes; decision to marry and raise a family or do you put your career first. The realization that you are no longer a young spring chicken hits some people in middle adulthood. In your mind you feel the same way you did when you were in your twenties, but the body tell you a different story. There are two different stages of love during early and middle adulthood described by. Psychologist Elaine Hatfield: there is compassionate love and passionate love. Compassionate love involves feelings of mutual respect, trust and affection, while passionate love involves intense feelings and sexual attraction. The Evolution of Social and Intimate Relationships Relationships during early adulthood can be a series of emotional and social changes. It often involves balancing intimacy and commitment with independence and freedom. According to Erikson, young adults face the controversy between intimacy and isolation. To solve this conflict, the individual wants to maintain a sense of independence while still having intimacy. A major task in early adulthood is to find a partner that is......

Not only have I learned to think critically, I have learned to set my priorities in order. Prior to this semester, my needs were completely derailed. It has been especially captivating for me to figure out how to manage my new life between school, work, and home with my family. That being said, week two helped me make some incredible adjustments on myself. I came to find out what my strengths and weaknesses were; more importantly, what my priorities are. Going out with friends, watching a lot of TV, or being on social media are distracting to me. I do my home work, go to school and go to work. However, I try as much as I can to balance my strengths and weaknesses to have a better mixture. This led me to ask myself who am I really? John W. Santrock in his book Human Adjustment talks about personality which he defines as a pattern of enduring distinctive thoughts emotions and behaviors that characterize the way an individual adapts to the world. Discussing objectives setting in week three truly made me contemplate certain objectives I have set for myself. I have developed some skills that helped me boost my self esteem. ...Privacy in the workplace can reasonably be expected in three general areas as it relates to the employer, co-workers, clients and customers. When an employee is hired at a new company, there are several security measures that are already in place in order to keep their personal information private and/or confidential. The first being in the Human Resources Department where all the information is gathered by the employee filling out various forms of that are confidential in nature. This information is kept in the employee’s private, confidential employee folder in the Human Resources Department, generally in a locked cabinet or other secured areas. This ensures that no one other than the Human Resources Department can get access to the information other in the file. At times, special permission is granted for a manager to review the file for a specific reason, along with the Human Resources representative. The second place where an employee can reasonably expect to have privacy is in the computer mainframe where all the pertinent records (such as social security number, address, date of birth, banking information, etc.) are stored. This is used primarily for an employee’s timekeeper administration and government reporting purposes. Only key personnel such as Human Resources, Accounting and IT have access. There are also different levels of access allowed based on the need to see the data. Another area of where an employee can reasonably expect to have......

...2016 A Call to Action: How to Intervene in Workplace Harassment Workplace harassment is a significant violation in the modern work environment. (Canadian Human Rights Commission, 2013) If left uncheck accusations of workplace harassment could potentially put a business in trouble with the regulatory agencies. In the workplace, employees experience sexual, gender, and racial/ethnic harassment. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has developed recommendations and guidelines as a way to reduce the occurrences of workplace harassment. On the other hand, employers also a responsibility to put in place “best practices” for employees to follow to ensure a safe work environment for everyone. Intervention is needed because persons who experience harassment have a hard time fight back. Because laws on workplace harassment are not sufficient to punish harassers. The act of workplace harassment/violence on the job is considered a legal and ethical issue. According to Ontario law, employers, managers, and unions have to thwart actively and monitor occurrences of workplace harassment to be in compliance with the “Ontario human rights code.” (Labour, 2015) Additionally, employers must also provide training on workplace harassment when they hire new employees.......
