The team will be discussing the history of the development of this theory, the beliefs on which this therapy is based, The important contributors of the theory, the theory of helping, the relationship the helper and the client, the kinds of problems that can be addressed with this theory, the population on which this technique is used. The multicultural issues in using this approach as well as what we have found during our research for the Adlerian therapy. The History: The history of Adlerian Theory was inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis. The foundering philosopher and psychiatrist was Alfred Adler (1870-1937) born in Vienna and later came to the USA in 1934; it was reinforced and strengthens by Rudolf Dreikurs in America. It was circulated throughout American elementary schools during the guidance movement by Don Dinkmeyer. The core belief system that a therapist begins with is still there, but the platform that a therapist connects most with eventually becomes a therapist’s model. I am aware that my current orientation is rather eclectic in nature. I find a basic connection with Freud and agree that we do have instincts that are innate to every human (Corey, 2013), in essence we are all animals (Freud, 1961) of sorts. People come from the streets, people come from jail, we have gang members, Muslims, Christians, etc. Most of our clients though are in some type of legal situation which has caused them to be there or from jail where they have to successfully complete the program in order to stay out of jail. A lot of them are scared so it makes them come across as resentful or angry. I’ve learned to adapt to these situations and look beyond the negative attitudes to the real root of the problem. Showing these ladies and gentlemen that someone actually does care and understand turns most of their attitudes around fast. Show them compassion and they start to open up and trust (if they’re ready to get better). If the client is not ready to admit he/she has a substance abuse problem though their attitude will not change.
