Life is Like a Gamble

“Life is like a gamble, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But whatever cards in life, whether club, spade or diamonds, always remember - never play with the heart” (Anonymous, SearchQuotes). There are many harsh lessons to be learned from the gambling experience, but the cruelest one of all is being able to fathom the distinction between having fun and being smart. Unfortunately for adolescents, their impression of having fun is very different from that of adults. Therefore, when it comes to gambling, their incorrect impression of “fun” might lead them towards the unforgiving process addiction. Here, we will discover the sad but true statistics of children and young adults addicted to gambling. Luckily for these individuals, there are ways to escape and prevent this demanding lifestyle, and they will be touched on. However, if they choose not to opt out of this routine or their impulses take over, significant dangers can become prevalent. These perils can lead to an unhappy life and in the worst cases, death. Therefore, it is exceptionally important to bring these three things to light in this assignment.
With the widespread acceptance of gambling as a socially acceptable activity, the trend is rising dramatically. Over the last twenty years, legalized gambling has increased about 3000 percent. In the United States, people legally wager about $600 billon on average (Lew, Hall, Williams, Page 400). This does not take into account the large amount of illegal gambling that occurs each year in America. If there were any way to accurately gather the information from the underground gambling market, those numbers would more likely than not, be drastically higher. With the astounding popularity of legal gambling in the United States, it is should be no surprise to anybody that the levels of illegal gambling, especially among

...experience, respond, and perceive global threats (Hipp et al, 2009). Specifically, the attacks on 9/11 were actions of terrorist and exposed the weaknesses of the nation, and specifically Washington DC. The article that will be scrutinized by Bornstein & Hendricks (2007) attempts to analyze the stress responses of adolescents in the Washington D.C. area within an ecological structure including, adolescent perception, maternal personal characteristics, and adolescent personal characteristics. The Theoretical Basis of the Article Bornstein & Hendricks (2007) use, “…a developmental, multivariate approach that allows for the evaluation of interrelations among variables as well as the unique contributions of each…” (p. 72). The extent of this study is distinctive because few studies have investigated the effects of disasters and war on adolescents from an ecological viewpoint. The article reflects upon the adolescent perception, personal characteristics of the adolescent and maternal personal characteristics of the adolescent’s parent or guardian. This last reflection is necessary because a parent’s behavior often takes a backseat to the viewpoint that an adolescent has of these particular behaviors (Bornstein & Hendricks, 2007).Studies have shown that the stress response reactions and...

Adolescent Development

...Stephanie Yeo Adolescent development Professor Faltot Bullying A typical prevention program for bullying helps elementary students recognize, refuse, and report bullying. They teach kids to report bullying and teaching them not to do it. These programs are heard to help decline bullying in schools and other places. This also helps the kids to stand up to people and makes them feel a lot safer. These programs are to help prevent bullying and make kids feel safe going to school and around their neighborhoods. This program is very helpful with adolescents. It is helpful because these programs have a lot to help prevent bullying. It shows that bullying can cause a lot of short time and long time damage to a person. Males are more likely to bully someone rather than a female. The adolescents are told to go to an adult if they are being bullied and talk to them. Bullying effects adolescents a lot and is the main age that is effects. This type of program is very helpful. Adolescent egocentric thinking can play a big part in bullying it may be the reason someone is bulling someone else. This also could play a part in having a problem with the success with the program. This could cause a problem with the program because the adolescent is only focused on themselves and think everyone is looking at them and they think people will judge what they are wearing. This could be a reason on why other kids pick on other kids is because they are insecure about what they are...

Adolescent Sports Injuries

...Sports Injuries While researching further into the major of Physical Therapy, there was a topic that kept resurfacing. That topic was adolescent sports injuries and why/how they occur. Injuries from sports participation are a substantial cause of hospitals visits and medical bills. Sport injuries are the second leading cause of ER visits for adolescents. As I dived deeper into researching this topic I came across scholarly articles though places such as JSTOR, Google scholar, and more through the library databases. One of my favorite articles that I used throughout the semester was Taft’s. Although this article might be slightly out-of-date I think the information is still respectable and still truthful to the current date. Timothy...

...realization that, indeed everyone is exposed to vulnerability and that even within our comfort zone, it takes few seconds for our whole lives to turn upside down. The article chosen for this analysis is of Bornstein & Hendricks (2007), which talks about the stress responses that were faced by adolescent living in the Washington area. The article will include adolescent perception, personal characteristics, and maternal characteristics. The Theoretical Basis of the Article This article sheds light on unique perspective as few studies have examined the after effects of war or natural disaster on adolescence from an ecological point of view. This article concentrates on maternal characteristics, personal characteristics, as well as the perception of the adolescent towards the primary giver (Bornstein & Hendricks, 2007). From a young age, a child will use same or similar communication style of their personal caregiver thus; stress response and reaction of caregivers have significant impact on how the adolescent reacts to a stressful situation. Either it makes the child stronger and learn to deal and overcome stress, or the adolescent lacks in the ability in adaptive to changes. Drug Use

...Checkpoint: Drug Use and Delinquency Response Christina Whitaker CJS/240 August 8, 2013 Kathy Holder In all honesty I feel that with adolescents they may try drugs just in order to experiment and to see what it’s like or they were most likely pressured into giving it a try by member of their peers. Drug use that’s among adolescents behavior will most likely start before the start of drugs and/or alcohol. According to the studies some professionals believe that adolescents who are basically involved with illicit drugs are simply separating themselves from normality of society in order to try to make a statement. Then there other professionals who believes that the juveniles who participate/experiment with certain drugs other than the use of alcohol and tobacco will most likely allow themselves to fall into a negative environment. Studies shows that adolescents will give all kinds of various reasons on to why they decided to turn to drugs such as: 1. My friends made me do it; 2. I just wanted to feel good; 3. All I wanted to do is to fit in and 4. Just want to try to escape the problems that I’m having. So basically these are just a few of the excuses that adolescents will give in order to try the various drugs. (Titus, Godley, and White, 2006) Also, an adolescent may use drugs as a result or a sign of lacked parental guidance, a strong secure family bond, supervision or let alone the physical, psychological and substance abuse that’s been happening within the adolescent’s...

...Adolescent times of storm and stress revised Hanne Op de Beeck Leuven Institute of Criminology (LINC) Hanne.Opdebeeck@law.kuleuven.be ABSTRACT This paper focuses on two issues regarding theories of adolescence. The first one, which has been a topic of discussion for a long time, concerns whether adolescence should be regarded as either an uncomplicated or a turbulent period. In the latter case, it is aspired in this paper to find out which factors account for such turbulence. The second issue, which arose more recently, concerns the continually longer postponement of the transition to adulthood. These topics are empirically addressed using the data of the second Flemish Youth Monitor. Analyses indicate that the loss of childhood innocence causes adolescents to have a more realistic evaluation of live, self and relationships. For adolescents whose ties with parents and their school environment are less tight, this can cause heightened stress in terms of lowered selfesteem and negative future prospects. These stresses, however, cannot account for the rise in delinquent activity during this developmental stage, for the analyses indicate that adolescent delinquency rather results from a more outgoing lifestyle. Finally, the idea of a prolongation of ‘storm and stress’ cannot be supported by the data, since it is found that most youth find their balance back around age 22. 1. STORM AND STRESS? The idea of adolescence being a period of ‘storm and stress’ – a perspective which was introduced...

...“Respect others if you would have others respect you” This, written by Baltasar Gracian, is reflecting that if we want to be respected then we have to learn to respect. Disrespect is lack of respect or disregarding someone. Most disrespect you may see will come from children. At their age it is easier to influence them in a negative way rather than adults. Things such as music, television, and social media are known to be a part of this. Research states it is very common for an adolescent to disrespect adults. It is often provoked by increased stress, depression, or violent feelings. One factor you will see is the lack of discipline. Growing up and learning about what’s wrong and what’s right is a crucial part of one’s life. Without discipline, people can grow up thinking they can do what pleases them and not get in trouble. That can include talking in a vulgar way, physical abuse and crime. Music can influence in multiple ways. The most direct way is the lyrics of the song. Sometimes a song will mention things such as beating up parents, allowing people to think this is acceptable. Another way is the artist themselves. Sometimes they will want to act just like their favorite artist. Sometimes that certain artist will be seen getting arrested or doing drugs and their fans will want to act in the same manner. It can take a post on social media, or an article in the news about the artist. Aside from the music, television may also have an effect on the child’s behavior. Certain...

Gambling and Sports

...Should Sports Gambling Be Legalized? Gambling is a common practice throughout human history, one that appeals to the individual’s desire for gain and offers the thrill of risk or uncertainty. Sports gambling is the “wagering of money or other items of value on the outcome of a sporting event, dependent either wholly or in part on chance” (Thompson, 2008, p. 1). Sports gambling generates billions of dollars annually, with large events like the Super Bowl or World Series alone able to generate wagers in the billions of dollars. This research will explore the arguments of those who oppose sports gambling and those who support it in order to answer the question: Should sports gambling be legalized? There are many individuals who support sports gambling. Though it is illegal in all states but Nevada to wager on individual sporting events in the U.S., a majority of sports gambling takes place between individuals or via Internet Web sites whose origins are offshore. Advocates of sports gambling argue it is a lucrative business that brings in billions of dollars of revenue, provides jobs, and offers consumers an opportunity for gain as well as a thrilling and even mesmerizing activity. As Headley (2007) notes, those individuals who support sports gambling often view it as a leisure activity where wise betting can payoff better than any kind of investment: “Many gamblers believe that gambling on sports will provide both an entertainment outlet and a way to work...
