Adolescent Self Portrait
What is it like to be an adolescent? Being an adolescent can be confusing at times because this is a stage of life when you are transforming from a child to an adult; a teenager. They go through so many different stages of change during this time such as physical changes and emotional changes. The physical change that occurs is called puberty. Puberty is like being stuck in between being a child and an adult because your parents expect more responsibility from you. These bigger responsibilities can be as simple as more chores or taking odd side jobs to help with the family income. This change can also mean learning how to be responsible with money in order to prepare you for when you are independent and on your own. Sometimes these responsibilities are more than we want to take on and, as a result, choose being rebellious toward parental rules and hang around friends instead.
Peer pressure is also a big part of being an adolescent. You have the pressures of growing up, family responsibilities and rules, and friends putting ideas in your head that leave you choosing whether to be cool and fit in or be respectful of parental guidelines. There are pressures to party, be sexually active, or do well in school. At this stage, we desperately want to be old enough to do adult things that some of our friends may already be old sufficient to do. Things like be able to partake in adult activities such as going to the bar or stay out as late as we want. There comes a point when we think that our parents don't understand or care when they tend to not let us do the things your friends' parents let them do. Being part of the popular crowd is imperative for social status from junior high through high school.

Identity versus Role Confusion is Erikson’s stage 5 of his psychological development. It is during this stage that “the transition between childhood and adulthood is most important. Children are becoming more independent, and begin to look at the future in terms of career, relationships, families, housing and more, they just want to belong to a society and fit in”. However as children develop the greatest effect that these changes will have on an adolescent personality are issues with body image and self concept. As girls develop they become very critical and very unhappy about their body and the way they look and its during this period depression tends...

Males and females face the same milestones, yet, are affected and changed by them differently. What It Feels Like To Be a Teenager Being a teenager is an exciting, scary, and overall stressful time in one’s life. Many changes occur physically and mentally and one can experience a new range of different emotions. A teen is also influenced by surrounding environmental factors then they used to be. Teenagers dream of doing cool things away from their parents and gaining a whole new level of independence that all begins when they turn about 13. That is actually a naïve view of what becoming a teenager is really all about. When an adolescent enters their teenage years, puberty begins. The body goes through major growth spurts that affects the body and mind. Boys will shoot up in height and develop a deeper-toned voice leaving them to feel like a man. A girl’s body will fill out as they develop breasts, pubic hair, and begin their menstrual cycle. The increase of hormones comes into play and mentally alters a girl's perception and attitude. Also, their voice will change too, but it will not be as dramatic as it is for a young boy. This stage of adolescence is very awkward...

Reflection of Artists Through Their Self Portraits

...Affandi’s “Self Portrait” depicts himself as an elderly man with unkempt hair and thick features. His signature whipping is used throughout the work; convoluted strokes of paint that imbibe a sense of vitality and dynamism into the portrait. These dramatic finger-painted streaks possess an almost physical energy, bringing to mind a passionate, confident artist who is unafraid of wild, unrestrained expression and exploration, both aesthetically and spiritually. Also, with a strong, vivid palette of primary and secondary colours—red, yellow and green with a hint of brown and flesh undertones—a sense of the artist's emotional depth is evoked. Hence, the self-portrait suggests a robust man whose forceful presence is asserted formally through his unorthodox, expressive painting style and palette choice. Affandi’s expression reveals physical flaws, including his broken teeth and thinning hair. However, the expression captured on Affandi’s face is one of benign good humor as he grins widely out from the picture to return the viewer’s gaze, which brings across a dynamic side of his personality despite his old age. In conclusion, Affandi’s self-portraits reveals an aging artist who realizes his frailty and, despite this, still exudes confidence and passion. Van Gogh’s self-portrait is one of a man with a chiseled face and penetrating eyes, fringed by red and ocher wisps of hair, which all but glows against a field of cool, moody blue-green, set down in fervent, agile brush strokes...

Vincent Van Gogh - Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear

...Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear by Vincent van Gogh 1889 Oil on Canvas a. Describe the subject matter of each of these two paintings [10] The subject matter of both paintings is self portrait, in which case would be Affandi and van Gogh respectively. In Affandi’s Self Portrait, the subject matter depicted is like the title aptly puts, himself, albeit in a more unconventional and abstracted manner. This is as opposed to the more realistic manner in which van Gogh has depicted himself in Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear. In Self Portrait, Affandi has characterised himself as a semi-abstracted figure against a plain background, with the highly detailed face in stark contrast with his torso, which as suggested by its dark green contour only (without any colouring within), appears to only be vaguely apparent. Affandi also seems to be placing extreme focus on the human emotions or mood, presumably meant to be conveyed by the extremely detailed expression on the face that he has painted. In fact, everything is lumped together (in fact, most of the colours used) on the face in his painting. Upon closer examination, one would find that Affandi’s face as depicted in this work is actually more of a mass of red rather than anything else, and lined with blobs of different colours (namely yellow and green) presumably to represent the hair. Details on the face are not clearly made out, rather only a faint outline of the eyebrows, eyes and nose is apparent. This is as opposed to Self Portrait...

Why a Self Portrait? A self-portrait allows you to see your beauty, understand your shadows, and express your feelings and reflections. It is a powerful tool that can help you to understand yourself on a deeper level, ultimately promoting inner peace, change, and personal growth. Where do I Start – and End? Obviously, attempting to understand yourself is a process that necessitates an introspective journey. • Begin by experimenting with some of the warm up techniques that are listed on the back of this page. These techniques should get you thinking in a reflective direction. • Once you have completed some of the warm up activities, log on to Moodle, and review the “It’s All About You” PowerPoint posted there. Titan Artwork

...TITIAN SELF PORTRAIT Name: Institution: Titian (Portrait of Himself) Titian is a high renaissance Italian painter that is famed for his paintings that dominated the 1560’s. As a painter, Titian gained fame for a self-portrait that he did on an oil canvas in his sunset years. This painting differs markedly from an earlier self portrait that he did in earlier years. In this particular portrait, the painter depicts himself as an old tired man. The portrait does not show the self-confident side of the painter that predominate his earlier works (Loh, 2007). This particular painting depicts Titian as an old bored fellow, staring into some distant place, looking lost in his thoughts. Aside from gaining fame on the two self portraits, Titian also made other notable paintings that include the paintings of sacred and profane love, assumption of the virgin, Pasero Madonna, Bacchus and Ariadne, Pierto Aretino, the Venus of Urbino among other paintings. Titian was famed among his contemporaries as a master genius in painting. He was thus given the undisputed title of the Venetian Master of Color. This name resulted from his mastery paintings that fully utilized color. His use of brushwork earned him fame in Venice as he executed classical artworks of both portraits and landscapes (Classen, 2007). The works by Titian are considered masterpieces and have been reviewed variously by different authorities notable among them being Harrt. He sees this painting as discriminatory...

Secret Paper

...A “selfie” is a self-portrait photograph, usually captured with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are frequently posted on social networking sites like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Tumblr. They are usually random, and are commonly taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or a monopod, or in a mirror. The term “selfie” was explained by photographer Jim Krause in 2005, despite photos in the selfie type predate the extensive application of the word. Self –taken pictures were specifically common on MySpace before Facebook became popular online social network in the beginning of the year 2000. Nevertheless, writer Kate Losse depicts that between 2006 and 2009 (when Facebook became well-known than MySpace) the “MySpace pic” (mainly “an incompetent, flash-blinded self-portrait, regularly taken in front of a bathroom mirror”) became a hint of a bad taste for users of the newer Instagram and Facebook social network. A “self-portrait” is a description of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Even though self-portraits have been built by artists since the earliest times, it is not before the Early Renaissance in the mid-15th century that artists can be commonly recognized representing themselves as either the primary subject...

Cat and I

...Cat + 1 Wanda Wulz 1932 1903-1984 Cat + I is a surreal and superimposed self portrait of Wanda Wulz and of a cat. These two photographs come together and create a face of a woman who is half-feline and half-human. As the picture progresses from the right side to the left, the woman acquires more and more feline characteristics such as fur, whiskers, and a cat nose. Wulz’s primary intention was probably to perfectly match up the facial features of the cat and woman to compose a believable, fluid portrait. The emphasis in this photo is on the woman’s face, specifically on her mysterious eyes. My eyes are first drawn to hers, and then travel down the snow-white and thick whiskers. They finally hop from one blotch of black, to the next blotch of white which cover her body. When I spend time looking at this photograph, I notice how her two eyes are completely negative from one another. This photograph is similar to other photos by Wanda Wultz in the fact that this is a molded creation of two of her others photos, one which is a self-portrait and the other a portrait of a cat. The lines of the white whiskers are extremely focused and brought out by the dark background. Wulz used a very shallow depth of field as she, the subject, is more focused than the background. Contrast is strong between the following: the dark background, the white whiskers, the eyes, the different shades of fur and the hair on her head. Cat + 1 made me ponder for awhile. I thought maybe Wulz was trying to show...

Self Portraits

...Self-Portraits Understanding the reason behind self-portraits can be as complicated as understanding ones self. Self-portraits can be the complete embodiment of an artist or his or her own reflection of self. Does anyone’s self-portrait really represent a true reflection of that individual? I would have to say no. A famous painter that I have chosen to discuss the concept of self-portraits is Rembrandt. Rembrandt was- Often more concerned with character and expression than likens and public image, he scrutinized his features in the mirror, made faces at himself and cast his eyes in evocative shadow, paying scant attention to the conventional formalities of portraiture. (Chapman, 1989, pg. 158). While Rembrandt appears to be studying self-portraits to study painting and expressions, I would consider my primary reason for painting a self-portrait is to identify my own self. How do I define myself? What are my outward thoughts of myself? Do I paint myself as overweight or underweight? Do I choose to use expressions or facial appearances of people I admire or do I choose to be overly judgmental of myself? Self-portraits evolved in the 15th century when artists really wanted to improve their social status and make a name for them. (Hall, 1999). Historical evidence strongly supports the idea that a fundamental shift away from a God-centered world-view towards a man-centered one took hold in the Renaissance and gained greater strength in the seventeenth century, and that this radical...

Realism and Impressionism Movements

...essay will be about Realism and Impressionism movements. Both Realism and Impressionism movement was in the 19th century. The differences between these movements are that the Realism movement was in the mid-19th century and Impressionism was in the late 19th century. I will discuss two pieces of artwork that was done in these movements. One will be The Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet and the other one is called Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette by Auguste Renoir. In this essay I will do my best to explain a little about how the characteristics and factors are reflected in these pieces of art. The Stone Breakers was a painting done by a French painter named Gustave Courbet. Gustave was well-known for his work of arts of still lives, self-portraits, females, common men workers, landscapes and many other common places. This painting was done in 1849 and is about hundred sixty-five years old. Addressed as the pioneer of the Realist movement Gustave set a unique artistic movement which caused a lot of disagreement among other artists. This movement demonstrated and signified the everyday life. Realism was exceptional and contentious in the sense that it broke away from the norm which was for centuries illustrating popular, religious figures, however Gustave ideologies were for artists to represent only what they can see or have lived. His painting was a work of social realism, illustrating two laborers, a young male, and one old male breaking rocks into gravels for paving the trail...
