Wuthering Heights
Throughout the novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, the characters endure many losses, including death and other misfortunes. Just as people in real life, each character deals with their losses differently, which helps develop the characters’ personalities. Two characters who experienced very similar situations, Hindley and Edgar, represent this idea the strongest. Hindley resorted to addiction and abusiveness while Edgar was hopeful and focused on loving his daughter. Bronte unfolds the idea that a person’s character is developed from adversity faced throughout life by creating a unique and bleak plot and characters.
Although there are many characters throughout the novel who experience adversity, Hindley and Edgar have the most similar situations; they both endured the death of their wives who they loved greatly. Before Hindley’s wife, Frances, died, Hindley was perceived as strong and powerful since he took on the master position of the household after the death of his father and asserted his dominance through …show more content…
From the beginning she portrays the Heights, where Hindley lives, as a hostile, wild, somewhat sad place. When Lockwood first observes the place he states “‘ Wuthering’ being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather.” The wild and sad Wuthering Heights represents the character Hindley developed after the adversity he faced in the house. The novel also deals with illnesses frequently; almost every character dies from an illness or at some point is sick. A gloomy mood comes along with the characters trying to heal their family members and recover themselves.
