Advocacy Case Study: Lucia Esperanza

Lucia Esperanza is a seven-year-old bilingual female student who has been diagnosed with multiple disabilities (cerebral palsy with intellectual disability and language delay). Currently, Lucia uses a motorized wheelchair and an augmentative communication device. Unfortunately, Lucia’s does not receive all of the necessary resources and services she needs. Lucia’s mother has also made it clear during the IEP meeting about the struggles and concerns she has for Lucia. In order for Lucia to succeed, members of the IEP team and advocacy organizations must collaborate to create an effective and efficient advocacy plan. Lucia has a wheelchair and will need a school bus that comes with a built in lift. The IEP team must discuss special transportation service during the IEP meeting. In addition, the team must also discuss the accommodations and services Lucia might need during transportation. The special education teacher should approach the school’s administration about the appropriate accommodations. - Lucia will need a bilingual bussing paraprofessional to assist her on the school bus to and from school. The paraprofessional must arrive ten to fifteen minutes prior to the school bus’s arrival. The bussing paraprofessional is required to frequently observe Lucia throughout the duration of the ride and must also be trained on how to work the motorized wheelchair.

- Lucia is in need of an adaptive seating. When Lucia is removed from her wheelchair and is placed on the floor, Lucia requires a adaptive seating to support her position on the floor. Currently Lucia’s teacher aide sits behind Lucia to support her position on the floor. I would like to request a positioning aide for Lucia from eSpecial Needs.
