The company, Aetna is an American managed health care company. The company began in 1853 in Hartford, CT where the first president of Aetna was Eliphalet A. Bulkeley. In Sicily there was a volcano called Mt. Etna which is what the company is named after. It was in 1861 that Aetna started offering life insurance policies. The Civil War was happening and many people were interested, so Aetna's business started to rise. In 1899 Aetna was one of the first companies to not only have stock insurance, but also go into the health insurance business. It was not until 1907 that they hired their first home office female employee. In 1912 many people who were insured by Aetna lost their lives on the titanic which resulted in Aetna losing many of their …show more content…
Their vision is to be a leader cooperating with many different job professions to build a stronger and better health care system. When looking at a company, using Porters 5-force analysis is a good way to see all aspects. Threat of New Entrants pushes Aetna to create new products and services they can also spend more money to create and expand their industry unlike the new and smaller companies. Bargaining Power of Suppliers can be tough with many different industries which is why Aetna has a supply chain with many different suppliers. Bargaining Power of Buyers puts pressure on Aetna. They want to buy the best for the cheapest amount so they can make their customers happy without hurting their business. Threats of Substitute Products or Services happens all the time with so many different products coming out all the time. Similar products come out all the time, which is why Aetna has to be more service oriented than product oriented so their customers will want to stay with them instead of going to a different company for basically the same thing they are getting with Aetna. Rivalry among the Existing Competitors, has not hurt Aetna long term, but they have a very competitive industry for that to be able to happen. If I were to apply for the Registered Nurse Utilization Management Nurse Consultant position at this age I would not qualify, but with the right education and experience I think it would be a good job fit for me. One way to determine if someone is qualified is by doing a SWOT analysis so I will be doing one over myself. For strengths, I think my personality and beliefs align with Aetna, because I like to do everything in my power to help someone have a better experience than they were expecting. A weakness I have is that I do not have as much schooling as other people have. I have many opportunities to further my education to be able to meet the requirements the company has to work there. I also have the opportunity to bring a new perspective to things because I would be younger than most of the people who are working there. Being younger than most people could also be a threat, because I will not have had as much experience in the health field as other people. Another threat would be if there are people who are older than me applying for the job they may give the position to them instead of taking the risk of hiring someone as a younger age.
