The whole world saw the movement for the abolition and civil rights that ended the institutions of slavery, lynching, and legalized segregation of African-Americans (blacks) in the United States. Although, in reality, modern and more indirect mechanisms for carrying out systemic racism and all its economic underpinnings have emerged. We see a shift from legalized racism, which was backed up and standardized by the law and legal systems, to a more “informally” adopted style of racism. In this version of racism, African-Americans are subject to unequal protection of the laws, excessive surveillance, extreme segregation, and neo-slave labor through incarceration, all in the name of crime control (Brewer, R., & Heitzeg, N. 2008). Religious and Ethnic Diversity

...Religious and Ethnic Diversity Paper Ryan K Wehrsig, University of Phoenix I have chosen to write the religious part of this paper on the Roman Catholic religion. The Roman Catholic religion differs from other religions in many ways. The Church teaches that it is the one true Church divinely founded by Jesus Christ. They differ from a Christen religion even though they worship the same God. They have unique beliefs, practices, and traditions that set them apart from other Christians. Over the course of the centuries there has been many quarrels and hostilities between Catholics/Christians and Muslims. In the 1500’s the Roman Catholic Church did not tolerate any deviance from its teachings because they did not want to show a sign of weakness. The Roman Catholic religion has contributed a lot to the American culture. About 24 percent of Americans identify themselves as Catholic, making Catholicism the largest Christian denomination in America. One of the biggest religions we have here in our Country. Catholics faced a lot of discrimination and prejudice when they were first being introduced into the United States. Some states even tried to banning Catholicism. Even though the first amendment of the constitution granted freedom of religion a lot of Americans did not accept Catholic newcomers. From my research I have learned a lot about the catholic religion. It helped me to get to understand it a little more in the sense of now I know that they are part of the Christian religion...

State of Union Address

...State of the Union Address Analysis The following paper will discuss the recent 2011 State of the Union address as presented by President Barack Obama with particular regard to the implications the policies may have for African American Politics. Midway through his term, the address reconfirmed many of the policies presented previously. President Obama particularly emphasised the need for bipartisanship and respect for one another as a result of the recent Tucson tragedy. Democrats and Republicans intermingling in their seating displayed this. He called for all members of the “American family” to be “bound together as one people”. This is an important note when taking into account that of race for although over time the situation involving African Americans on the whole has improved, there are still many inequalities that still exist. The address emphasised three major points which will analyse innovation, education and infrastructure and technology. Continuing on the strong theme of unity, President Obama suggests that one of the most important investments the United States of America needs to make is that of innovation. He proposes that the nation needs to aim for “this generation’s Sputnik moment”. In this way, President Obama points out that developing nations like India and China are well on their way to becoming leaders in areas of technology and education. To continue being competitive in these areas he suggests the nation needs to “out-innovate, out-educate and outbuild”...

Racial Society

...Religious and Ethnic Groups Sandy Bruhn University of Phoenix Religious and Ethnic Groups Out of the various religious and ethnic groups that are out there, I decided to research about the Deliverance Ministry because one of the ladies I work with is very devoted to this group. So to get a better understanding, I asked her some questions to help me with my paper. During my research I found that the Deliverance Ministry refers to the activity of cleansing a person of demons and evil spirits in order to address problems manifesting in their life as a result of the presence of said entities and the root causes of their authority to oppress the person. Adherents to this theological concept attribute physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional problems that people suffer to the activities of the oppressing spirits following the example of Jesus Christ given in the gospel. The practices and many of the underlying beliefs of these ministries are not accepted by all Christians. This religious group differs from others in a few different ways. They are compromised from different African countries and backgrounds. They preach in all different types of languages, when usually churches stick to one specific language. The Deliverance Ministry has contributed to the American culture by giving us a taste of a different kind of world and a different kind of view on religion. The Deliverance Ministry has given Americans a worldly view. When I asked my co-worker about discrimination...

Prisoners of Henrietta Lacks, and the Value of Their Fate

...Prisoners of Henrietta Lacks, and the Value of Their Fate Inquiry Question: How does Rebecca Skloot’s depiction of prisoner experiments and research change the way we think about how early medical developments were first brought to life, and who really took the risks we should credit for them? Hypothesis/Working Thesis: Considering the reduced liabilities, rights, and public outreach of prisoners in the past, using prisoners as test rats was viewed as highly unethical and forceful by many. Skloot, Rebecca. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. New York: Crown Publishers, 2010. Print. In the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rebecca Skloot not only argues her point, but also does a great job at informing and teaching her readers the vast risks prisoners were susceptible to while being used by doctors as human guinea pigs. Skloot makes many references to different potentially deadly diseases that were injected into prisoners for further research. The public’s opinion on this happening was shocking; many thinking it was highly unethical and forceful of the doctors. Skloot makes claims about how prisoners were viewed as vulnerable inmates who were unable to give informed consent. Regardless of how the treatment was viewed, prisons and doctors did what they wanted to do in those days ranging from diseases, to chemical warfare agents, to deterring how X-raying testicles affected sperm count (Skloot 129). Throughout her study of how HeLa cells have expanded, and where they...

People are shaped by their traditions and use traditional ways to satisfy their needs for better health (Agec, 2012). America is a melting pot of different cultures. This cultural diversity comes with differences in health traditions and health decisions. It could be a religious approach to health or a cultural tradition. Health has a different meaning for different people. So, everyone has a different approach to his or her health ( Alpa, 2007). Cultural heritage is an important of one’s economic, social and health issues. It helps one understand someone else’s health heritage, as well as traditional health methods that are used to maintain, protect, and restore health. Applying these concepts makes it easier to deal with a person’s physical, mental, and spiritual beliefs. Different cultures have different values and beliefs of health, disease, illness, birth, and death. It is essential to open a pathway for the effective communication of others values and beliefs, in regards to health, illness, family support as well as spiritual values ( Agec, 2012).
