“Dyes and Dolls: Multicultural Barbie and the Merchandizing of Difference” In the article “Dyes and Dolls” by Ann duCille she discusses how many, “manufactures have taken on a global perspective of a nearsightedness that constructs this whole new world as small and cultural difference as consumable (Ann duCille, p267). When Barbie turned the age of thirty Newsweek reported that there were 500 million Barbie dolls sold, on Barbie’s thirty fifth birthday Boston Globe reported that nearly two Barbie dolls are sold every second somewhere in the world; and fifty percent of these dolls are sold in the U.S (Ann duCille, p267). 1990 Mattel Inc discovered a new marketing strategy to make more money by going “ethnic” launching a campaign for Black and Hispanic versions ( A. duCille, p267). According to Deborah Mitchell, say Ann, Deborah ( African American woman) says, “Barbie allows little girls to dream”. “When little girls fantasize themselves into the conspicuous consumption, glamour, perfection, and, and some have argued anorexia of Barbie’s world, it is rarely, if ever, “in their own image that they dream” Regardless of what color dyes the dolls are dipped in or what costumes they are adorned with, the image they present is of the same mythically thin, long-legged, luxurious haired, buxom beauty (A. duCille, p268). But profit still continues to be the driving factor merchandizing of difference (A. duCille, p267).
“As feminist have protested almost from the moment she hit the market, Barbie is not simply a childs toy or just a teenage fashion doll; she is an icon- perhaps the icon- of true white womanhood and femininity, a symbol of the far from innocent ideological stuff of which the (Miss) American dream and other mystiques of race and gender are made (A. duCille, p268).

What It's Like to Be a Black Girl

...Literature Instructor: Karen Lawler 10/06/2012 Assignment 2 10/06/2012 “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” VS “Child of the Americas” The literary works that I decided to compare are “Child of the Americas” by Aurora Levin Morales (A Latino) and “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” by Patricia Smith. (an African American). They were both born in America, which is an important fact because Blacks and other minorities in the U.S. experienced extreme racism and prejudice compared to their peers into the countries. The poems tell how two young girls, from different beliefs. These poems are important because they deal with racism and discrimination issues which occurred prior to the Civil Rights Era and still exist in today world. Although, each of them experienced discrimination their perceptions its effect and how they coped were very different. These two young girls from different American minority sub-cultures, views themselves in a totally different perspectives. One of the young girls wishes to identify herself with the culture and image of her African American ancestor’s slave owners; however the other wishes to embrace and celebrate her African Latino heritage. Assignment 2 10/06/2012 “What It’s like to Be a Black Girl” VS “Child of the Americas” In the poem “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” I believe in the mind of a young black girl is the fuel with racism and discrimination brought through race and gender, this young girl show the transitioning from...

Weapons Focus Effect

...Eyewitnesses and the Weapon Focus Effect in children Adults and the Elderly Maria Urtado Florida International University ABSTRACT The “weapon focus effect” (WFE), states that a witness of a crime remembers fewer details about the perpetrator’s appearance when the perpetrator has a gun. To date, there are no studies of older adults and the WFE. The present study measures the WFE in older adults (60-70) compared to young adults (20-40) and children (8-12). The study consisted of 180 participants, randomly selected to watch one of three videos. The three videos were the same, with the exception of an object being manipulated. Conclusions were based on how much detail participants were able to recall about the target. Older adults remembered fewer details about the target’s appearance than children and young adults. The results suggest that older adults would take longer focusing on an object that is out of context, therefore, not focusing on the perpetrator, resulting in fewer details remembered. Eyewitness and the Weapon Focus Effect in children compared to the elderly Many people have been convicted of crimes that they did not commit. Eyewitness testimony is one of the major causes for these wrong convictions. At least 75% of wrongful convictions are the result of inaccurate eyewitness identification (Innocent Project, 2009). Before the public became aware of the large amount of wrongful convictions, psychology researchers...

Manager

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...

...corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country. —Thomas Jefferson (letter to Tom Logan, 1816) J 1 ustice John Paul Stevens of the U.S. Supreme Court cited the third president of the United States in his strong dissent to the majority’s 2010 decision allowing corporations unlimited spending on behalf of political candidates.1 Quoting the court’s earlier McConnell decision, Stevens wrote, “We have repeatedly sustained legislation aimed at ‘the corrosive and distorting effects of immense aggregations of wealth that are accumulated with Jefferson’s animus may seem curious in light of the history of British corporations that financed the settling of the first North American colonies and, as discussed in this chapter, are often credited with providing the model for representative government adopted by the framers of the U.S. Constitution (Tuitt 2006). 280 Corporations in the Modern Era——281 the help of the corporate form.’” The court’s decision, Justice Stevens continued, “will undoubtedly cripple the ability of ordinary citizens, Congress and the States to adopt even limited measures to protect against corporate domination of the electoral process.” The essence of Justice Steven’s dissent in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is that corporations are legally devised entities that organize activities and are given special legal protections similar to those afforded individuals. Their...
