Ag in the Classroom
AGBE 1120-001
17 April 2012

With the bustle of everyday life and our hectic lifestyles, we sometimes forget the importance that agriculture has on our lives. I recently had the opportunity to visit Ag in the Classroom and observe hundreds of children learning about agriculture. They were learning about everything from where food and clothes come from to how certain farm equipment works. This gave me a great chance to learn a few things myself while I observed the process of how these children took hold of the information given to them.
As soon as you walk in the door, you are immediately drawn to the great atmosphere happening down in the arena. There are sections divided off for each activity and plenty of room to wonder around and find something that interests you. I was greeted and asked to sign in my nice man from the local Farm Bureau. One of the most noticeable things that I believe was a great success was the use of the air horn. A man sat in the center of the arena and every 15 minutes would blow and air horn to mark the time to move to a different activity. This was a simple but very effective way to let everyone know when it was time to move. This is important because 15 minutes is a long enough time to learn but not loose small children’s attention.
However, one thing that I did notice was it was sometimes very difficult to hear or understand what the people were saying. It would get loud or noisy and make it hard to hear what they were trying to explain the kids. Using a small microphone would help eliminate this problem. Another suggestion I had for improvement would be more signs directing students and teachers. The little signs behind the booth were mostly covered up and would have been helpful to see what the name of that particular activity was.
Overall, it was great event. I really enjoyed having the chance to experience Ag in the Classroom first hand. They provided a great learning environment for all the kids and gave them a realistic feel of how agriculture is important in their lives.

After the growers harvest the crops they bring the berries to Driscoll’s coolers where the berries are inspected by graders for quality, and then the berries are chilled to thirty-four degrees in the cooler before being loaded on trucks and sent to customers. Last year Driscoll’s sold over one billion pounds of fruit, filled 150,000 orders, and loaded 38,000 trucks. Driscoll’s is the leading berry provider...

Pediatrician Personal Statement

...Before I fully understood what a pediatrician did, I told myself and everyone else, that I would become one when I grow up. While my specifical vocational interests may have changed, my passion for natural science has not. At the end of tenth grade, my biology teacher signed my yearbook and wrote in it “never stop asking questions.” Through the years, I have done well in all of my science classes; however, more importantly, I have sought ways to further my exposure to the natural sciences outside of the classroom. For my junior and senior years of high school, I was accepted into Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts. Though I am a STEM student with a science emphasis, I still took speech and composition during my first semester...

Turn Taking in Conversations: Overlaps and Interruptions

...Turn-taking in Conversations: Overlaps and Interruptions - Recorded Conversation Analysis - Introduction Turn-taking behavior and interaction patterns play a key role in the process through which the participants interpret each-other's meanings and interactions. The study of "rules" of conversational behavior, turn-taking, overlapping of turns, pausing between the turns, etc. was pioneered by Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson (1974). Interruption, according to West and Zimmerman, disrupts a current speaker - although disruption as such can also be regarded as interaction. Drummond claims that the disruptive potential of a turn can and should be evaluated based on the way the overlap was resolved in the interaction. Lerner (1989) observes that there are interruptions which can be justified in the ongoing interaction based on the sequential context of turns that lead to interruptive turns. He calls these justified interruptions. There are also "delayed completions", which represent a device for resolving overlap; a locator producing them might have been 'interrupted' by a current speaker before reaching the end of a (prior) turn - this gives the locutor the status of an interuptee, and thus the interuptee gains the "right" to complete his or her previous turn by interrupting the current speaker. In defining overlaps, the following qualify as important concepts: 1. Transition Relevant Places (TRPs) - they are a natural place for the occurrence of short overlaps or simultaneous...

Attendance Monitoring Syste,

...“Attendance Monitoring in EARIST” INTRODUCTION The emergence of electronic paradigm for learning compared to traditional method and availability of almost all information on the information superhighway(Internet), nowadays have caused students to be less motivated to come to the lecture rooms than ever before. Laziness on the part of students, nonchalance to school work, extra social activities that have no importance in aiding the objectives of the institution and a lot more, may prevent students from attending lectures. Sequel to these, lecturers and administrators in most developing countries have had to come up with ways to ensure a healthy participation from students, and make sure that the student-lecturer interactive relationship is kept intact. This in some cases have come in simple forms like roll calls, while in more interesting cases, can be formats like surprise quizzes, extra credit in class, etc. These strategies are however time consuming, stressful and laborious because the valuable lecture time that could otherwise been used for lectures is dedicated to student attendance taking [8] and sometimes not accurate. In addition to all these challenges, the attendances are recorded manually by the tutor and therefore are prone to personal errors. There arises a need for a more efficient and effective method of solving this problem. A technology that can solve this problem and even do more is the RFID technology. RFID is an automated identification and data...

...The Bad Effects of Dynamic Learning Program approach in Physics and Math in the studies of Fourth Year students of EHSD INTRODUCTION Dynamic Learning Program was conceptualized by Dr. Christopher Bernido and Dr. Maria Victoria Carpio-Bernido. Both of them are Ramon Magsaysay awardees, they made this learning program in order to provide better education in Filipino students who have their own potentials. This school year 2012-2013 was the very first year that EHSD adapt this program. It includes tons of writings and less discussing, this helps students to study on their own. On the other hand, Physics and Math are the hardest subject areas in Fourth year, these subject areas requires a lot of skills, explanations and patience in order to understand what the concept is. Unlike other subjects like TLE and History, Physics and Math needs a lot of mathematical abilities. This research paper will soon answer what are the bad effects of having Dynamic Learning Program in Physics and Math instead of the normal approach that was given years before. Personal Narrative: Life After High School

...that I have taking over the last four year have been kinda easy to where I can teach myself and home which I realized works better than being in a classroom. My strongest subject has always been English i just find it fun and easy to learn. Math as always been the hardest subject no matter how hard I try to understand it but once I understand it we move on to another thing which I quite understand so I stay after school. Throughout the different math teachers that I have had the experience and their learning styles the one thing that I have noticed about myself when I learn math I learn better when teachers go step by step, do multiple examples, and spend a bit more time on the unit. Overall my math grades have kinda have always stayed at C. Yes, I could've tried harder but I was okay with the C because the way that I see it is that is not a D or an F. The Summer of going into my freshman year I finished my hours at the Family Resource Center where they have taught me to be more of an organized person and they also taught me to understand the meaning of “ There is always something to do”. Doing my hours at the Family Resource Center has gave me a taste of what the real world work force will feel like. Throughout high school I was not the type of person to participate in like school clubs and all, but I was part of the Woodlake FFA Ag class for 2 years. It really wasn't into my Junior year where I decided to join clubs and the club that I joined was SHAPE. SHAPE has really opened...

Archery Club Story

...Izaak Walton League of America, Frederick Chapter #1's youth program. I've watched kids from all over Frederick County, even WV and PA, come into Coach Ben Kelkye's youth hunter education program as shy preteens and leave it as self-confident young adults. What I have rarely seen are Emmitsburg kids on the firing lines or in the classroom. If there is a reluctance to promote firearms and/or hunting the Gettysburg Archery Club is to our north. Some of that club's founding members were Emmitsburg residents. Bob Eiker comes immediately to mind. While the club had declined over the years it currently has new members interested in expanding the sport beyond those only in it for hunting. Archery events do not generate any more noise than a ball game would, nor present the serious safety issues firearm events do. Some of the IWLA kids tell me their public schools now offer archery classes. I'm sure some of the local arrow slingers would leap out of the woodwork should the town take an interest in promoting this sport with or without coordination with the public schools. And last, a youth market garden run primarily by children not involved in the area's school Ag programs. I send emails to all the committee members I have addresses for. I can already hear the refrain: “You can't, we can't...” I am not Socrates. I do not love this place more than I love life itself. I sleep here, but I don't live here, though I'll likely die here. I've no money, no political clout, no entrepreneurial drive...
