French founder of the Encyclopédie, Denis Diderot, once said "Freedom is a gift from heaven, and every individual of the same species has the right to enjoy it as soon as he is in enjoyment of his reason." These words were said during the time of the Enlightenment, which was an intellectual movement that changed society in different aspects. It was also known as the Age of Reason and took place primarily in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Philosophers such as John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith and Mary Wollstonecraft all believed that society would be best through freedom in government, religion, economy and gender roles.
In order to have a good and working government, John Locke believed that freedom was the most important element. According to him, “There is nothing more evident, than that creatures of the same species and rank...should also be equal one amongst another without subordination or subjection…” (Source A) This shows how he believes that a government without people who are superior and ruling (kings and queens) is the most successful type. John locke knew that individual freedom is the best for a good democracy that works for everyone. …show more content…
According to his letter, ”If one religion only were allowed in England, the government would possibly become arbitrary; if there were but two, the people cut one another’s throats; but as there are such a multitude, they all live happy and in peace.” (Source B) This statement demonstrates how freedom of religion in England will allow for peace and peace is needed for a successful democracy.
