The Story Behind Aggressive Driving

The causes for aggressive behavior of some drivers can be caused by different reasons like stress, material abuse, high speed modern cars and mental disorders and in some cases by peer pressure. Most of the time people tend to overlook these causes and ignore them. But they can significantly affect the way people drive.

Violence in any form mainly originates from work related stress. People who are not happy with their jobs or bosses often tend to show their aggression while doing other things, like driving. The effects of anxiety on aggression can be enhanced by family problems and bad relationships. As it is while driving a person transitions from work to home and vice versa, the person who faces tension at these two places will drive more violently.

Mental disorders such as “Tourette’s syndrome” can also lead to aggressive driving. People suffering with such disorders are unable to control their sudden swings of mood, causing them to drive more aggressively at times. There are other disorders where the person cannot control his anger even while driving. Although there is not much these people can do about this, they can train themselves to control their behavior while driving and be more responsible.

Violent video games, watching high speed car races and videos of dangerous car stunts can increase aggressive behavior of drivers substantially. Video games such as “Need for Speed: Underground” encourage the players to drive faster, more dangerous and to evade the cops. These games provide an interactive environment for the player to experience aggressive driving without any dangerous consequences. Although the person who plays these games may think it is just a game, he is likely to drive faster and more dangerously in real life. Viewing Hollywood stunt men

...us act a different way when we are behind something that no one can truly see us. I relate Vanderbilt’s article and Kiki article on how they misuse the new technology. In the Kiki essay she was posting pictures of herself online and no one really knew who it was, until some people hacked into her page. Even when she was posting pictures and video of herself which made people comment nasty things talking about her. If those people that comment mean things talking about her where not just a profile and was someone face to face we usually wouldn't say things like that. Also in the Vanderbilt’s essay he talks about the road rage and the different types of communication while driving. Many people while driving get very upset with other drivers if they need to be somewhere quickly, or even if the person is driving slower then they want to drive, which cause the person that is behind the person that is going slow to speed up and cut them off. I have seen a lot of incidents where people cut someone off and they want to get pay back on they so they try to cut them off back, then it turns into an accident. Citizens do not understand how dangerous cars and truck are when we are behind the wheel, they can hurt someone very badly plus even kill them. We as people need to understand that our ethical compilations need to help us from being cyborgs, to understand that we have to live our own life without having to use all the new technology. People today are totally cyborgs we use technology...

Why Are Car Wrecks Important

...Daily in the United States we lose people to fatal car crashes caused from reckless driving, drunk driving, and speeding. Car wrecks are the number one leading cause of death in the United States today to make the percentage of death by car wrecks go down we need to have have harder consequences on people that break those laws. What is more important to you, driving safely and saving someone’s life or driving how you want to and taking someone’s life or possibly even your own? People lose friends and family daily from car crashes and never get justice for their death, car wrecks affect everyone around people in the crashes, and tickets and license points do not stop people from driving how they want to so we need stronger consequences to stop them from that. I think the in the United States today people get away with driving recklessly, speeding, and drunk driving and we need to create a stronger law and consequence to stop people from causing these deadly crashes. I along with many other people want to stop people from being so careless with their driving decisions. Most people will eventually have a license and a car and...

Road Rage

...In Road Rage can result in belligerent driving behavior from many civilians. I interviewed three teachers and they all had different experience. Psychiatrists call it Intermittent Explosive Disorder. It is a behavioral disorder characterized by extreme expressions of anger, often to the point of uncontrollable rage. Intermittent Explosive Disorder has been a serious problem for years, but no one knew how common it was. (Kessler) Road Rage is a relatively serious act. It may be seen as an endangerment of public safety. There are different penalties for road raging. Most people who road rage are called “Road Ragers”. They can be prosecuted for careless or reckless driving. Drivers with low tolerances for traffic delays might respond by following too closely, changing lanes frequently, or becoming angry at anyone who impedes their progress. Some people drive aggressively because they have too much to do and are running late for work, school, their next meeting, lesson, soccer game, or other appointment. There are many ways to avoid becoming a victim of road rage. First you can obey posted speed limits and traffic laws. You must be cautious and expect the unexpected. If you are cut off, do not make any hand gestures to the other motorist. Also if you are being chased by another motorist who appears to be in a rage, do not weave in and out of traffic. You could cause harm to yourself, passengers, and other motorists. Aggressive driving and road rage is on the rise. With more...

Road Rage

...people are injured or killed in car wrecks caused by road rage/ aggressive driving. Despite this fact many people still are impatient and become angry on the road. Driving is a curious display of public and private acts. A car isolates the driver from the world. The personal sensation of power over a couple thousand pound car is intoxicating. Road rage/aggressive driving starts from things such as illegal or improper lane changes, failing to yield the right of way, and excessive speeding just to name a few. Everyday we deal with this type of driving. Everyone runs a great risk just driving around the corner to the local convenience store or just to the local church. According to U.S. News and World Report, the United States Department of Transportation estimates that two-thirds of fatalities are at least partially caused by road rage/ aggressive driving. This essay will look at some of the arguments for and against road rage/aggressive driving. The major cause of aggressive driving is the discourteous or inattentive driver. Driving behaviors include changing lanes to closely, tailgating and "the number one cause is the left lane hog." (Larson 1) These seemingly small errors infuriate the potentially aggressive driver and cause a transformation indescribable to man kind. Reduced law enforcement, highway traffic, the growing congestion is cities, and personal issues play a large role in the disposition of the aggressive driver. ...Aggressive Driving Should be Avoided (1)Aggressive driving is a phenomenon, which has only recently got the public worried. (2)The National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSC) defines aggressive driving as “the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property”. (3)Actions such as running red lights, improper passing, overtaking on the left, improper lane change, failing to yield, improper turns, running stop signs, tailgaiting, careless driving and speeding are examples of aggressive driving.. (4)Such actions are dangerous to other road users. (5)Aggressive driving should be avoided because it causes crashes, injuries and fatalities.             (6)The first reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes crashes. (7)According to NHTSC between 78 percent (excessive speed) and 100 percent (improper passing) of the cases of aggressive driving resulted in traffic crashes and 96 percent of the drivers cited for “following too closely” or tailgaitng caused crashes as a result of their aggressive driving. (8)Moreover, “running red light”, “improper passing”, and “overtaking on the left” topped other categories of aggressive driving in contributing to traffic crashes.             (9)Another reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes injuries.(10) NHTSC states that the percentages of the injuries caused by aggressive driving are, in almost all categories of aggressive driving, above 100 percent...

That sometimes causes to people get late to their destination and people sometimes actually get frustrated behind the steering wheel without the traffic moving as fast as usual. What causes that is people start getting frustrated start cutting off people from another lane the other person gets mad, and now that car is probably going to try and cut off that same car that cut her off. It just gets worse and worse sometimes people are in one lane and they have to get off in one specifically and their on the last lane, and the people won’t let her pass so she can take that exit, even if you have your signal lights on, people will actually ignore you or even just throw you their vehicle. ...over escalating incidents of “road rage” worldwide [Sleek, 1996]. Concern over road rage has extended to the Internet, where several Web sites have addressed highway agression. The America Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety commissioned three studies of aggressive driving (1997). The studies analyzed 10,037 police reports and newspaper stories concerning traffic incidents that were followed by violent behaviors. Congressional testimony indicated that aggressive behaviors were involved in nearly 28,000 American highway accidents according to Dr. Ricardo Martinez, head of the U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [Wald, 1997]. In Washington, there has been an increasing tendency for motorists to blame aggressive behavior for accidents on the Capital’s roadways [Reid, 1998]. The problem is also of concern in Canada, where the Ontario Provincial Police report receiving 500 telephone calls per week complaining about the aggressive practices of other highway users [Mitchell, 1997; see also Gottleib, 1997; Taylor, 1997]. Vest et al. [1997] describe some of the perpetrators of road rage who do not fit the expected profile of young, risk-taking males with histories of aggressive/antisocial behavior. They report that in Salt Lake City, Utah, a 75-year-old driver, angered over a...
