Aha Moment- After having a strenuous few days, Holden has come to a realization about what he wants to do with the rest of his life. While talking with Phoebe about failing out of Pencey, she brings up the point about what he will do if he does not continue school. Holden stops and really thinks about this and all of a sudden has an idea, “That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye. I know its’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be”(Salinger 225). Although this idea sounds crazy, it must mean something because The Catcher in the Rye, ended up being the title of the book. It is also ironic that Holden wants to do something that helps others because he needs the help of other people to help him through his problems. This is a significant realization for Holden because now he can have something to aim for in life instead of being depressed all the time.
Aha Moment- There are two occasion in the book where Holden has came up with a plan to move to a secluded place and to never be bothered by anyone. In the beginning of the story, Holden visits his old teacher, Mr Spencer to say goodbye to his before he leaves Pencey. Mr Spencer said some words of wisdom to Holden, but he did not care to listen and process what they actually meant, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules” (Salinger 12). So far in his life, Holden has not followed the rules as much as he should have. He did not care about what he was doing and was just “going through the motions”. The words of wisdom given by Mr Spencer can help Holden to understand that you can not take anything for granted and to be careful for what you wish
