The case of Aileen Wuornos, reportedly America’s first female serial killer, has been a subject of news media since the early 1990s when the bodies of several men were found murdered along the highways of north and central Florida (Pike and Linning, 2018)

The first of which, 51-year-old convicted rapist and electronics store owner Richard Mallory, was found in December 1989 in a wooded area after being shot twice in the left lung (Myall, 2018). Construction worker David Spears, 43’s naked body was then found by a Floridian highway on 1 June 1990 having been shot six times (Baker, 2018). Five days later, the body of 40-year-old rodeo worker Charles Carskaddon, was discovered with nine small caliber bullets to the chest and abdomen.

However, more modern biological and psychological theory acknowledges that, while genetically influenced traits, like the aggression, difficulty learning, and psychopathy displayed by Wuornos, do affect the development of a criminal, so too does larger society (Akers and Sellars)(Delsanta).

By this account, Wuornos’ troubled upbringing seemingly allowed any predisposition to violence to manifest. Crucially, she was raised in an environment which failed to provide effective elements of social control.

In exploring control theory, Reckless proposed that internal control or "inner containment" acts as means for an individual to moderate behaviour, thus mitigating the propensity for deviance (Encyclopedia ).

For instance, during trial Wuornos underwent psychiatric assessment and was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder which, by nature, entails a lack of inner containment.

While Wuornos displayed behaviour symptomatic of the condition in early childhood, namely unrestrained aggression, and volatile temperament, she received no psychological treatment/support (del

Women and Communications

...Matt Klaus Professor Firestone Com 4030 4 March 2012 Feminist Criminology, Aileen Wuornos, and the Future of Third Wave Feminism Crime committed by women is on the rise, especially in the area of violent crimes such as murder (Balfour’ 739). This has produced a new form of feminist studies in an area called feminist criminology. What hasn’t been studied as extensively is the question of why women kill. I argue that by using the individuality concept of third wave feminism and doing more research in the field of feminist criminology, patterns of criminal behavior may be established which may prevent severe female crime such as murder. This paper seeks to explain how advancing the study of feminist criminology is good for the U.S. legal system and could have changed the outcome for Aileen Wuornos. In this paper I will discuss what third wave feminism is, then I will discuss what feminist criminology is and how it applies to the Aileen Wuornos case, and lastly I will show that with advanced studies into the field of feminist criminology, odds of severe crimes committed by women could decrease. The third wave of feminism is not easily describable. However, it can be framed by saying that it is a movement that continues to advance the women’s rights agenda of the second wave (Zimmerman et al. 77). Unlike the second wave which was intended to give a voice to all women, the third wave tends to reflect more on the individual. By focusing on personal narratives, responsible...

Media Bias In Court Cases

...Anthony, Amanda Knox, George Zimmerman and many others. What do all of these cases have in common? Large amounts of controversy and media coverage. Extremely publicized cases such as these. It's hard to stray away from opinionated information given when you're a juror, to stick to the facts and evidence given in the courtroom. The media is everywhere, we interact with it all the time in our daily lives. Whether we are watching the news, reading a magazine, or even checking our phone on various social media. When looking for jurors for a case it is difficult to find someone with little to no exposure to the case. The jurors aren't allowed to hear and see the media coverage of the case, but when a case is highly publicized it's harder to stay away from the media because it's all around us. “Social science studies has found that ‘exposure to the various media had a prejudicial impact on people, as they were unaware of their biases.” Upon hearing what the...
