Parallel Journeys

...Book Review Parallel Journeys Parallel Journeys, by Eleanor Ayer with Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck, compares the life of two young people in Germany during the rise of Hitler and the outbreak of World War II. They were born within sixty miles of each other, but their lives took dramatically different paths. Alfons, is a boy who grew up on a farm in Germany. When Hitler came to power he became involved with the Hitler Youth. Alfons grew up on a farm but was a Nazi boy who became a commander at age sixteen. This book truly depicts Hitler's impact and influence on the youth of Germany. Alfons was brainwashed by Hitler's promises, a full pledged Nazi youth is how it is presented in the book he participated in all rallies. He started his training to become the future of Germany and eventually of the world. There he learned discipline and order. He trained to become a soldier and he learned the ways of warfare. He was taught to be a follower of anti-Semitism and was told to hate the Jewish people. He along with millions of Nazi’s believed that they were the reason for Germany's problems. As years went by, Alfons rose through the ranks of the military until the end of the war where realized what atrocities had been committed, he than took off his uniform and went on to help people. On the other side of the spectrum we have Helen Waterford a young Jewish girl who grew up in Frankfurt, Germany. She married Siegfried Wohlfarth and moved to Amsterdam because of tension brewing...

...Spain During Ancient Times or Dates of Antiquity During ancient times or dates of antiquity Spain was under the Roman Empire. It was called Hispania, to it were born Roman emperors Trojan and Theodosius I and the philosopher Seneca. The Roman Empire (Latin: Imperium Romanum) was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization, characterized by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. Spain During the Middle Ages 5th to 8th Century Rulers: Alaric I (Alareiks in the original Gothic) was likely born about 370 on an island named Peuce (the Fir) at the mouth of the Danube in present day Romania. Intercultural Concepts

...1.) A) Explain the difference between Norms and Values as they pertain to society. B) Clarify how Values might have an impact upon social Norms. Norms is best explained by Dr. Fons Trompenaars as “shared orientation that is defined by a group of people of what they should do.” This means that norms is the usual behavior found within a society. This of course can vary from one culture to the next and is adjusted depending on the setting, whether it be an office setting or a home environment. For example, a work place often has a set standard of norms that all employees must adhere to. At times, these norms can be written in a handbook or can be unspoken norms that everyone picks up on once they integrate themselves to the organization. Dr. Fons Trompenaars defines value as “as the things that a society likes to do and when a group likes the ideas or beliefs of what they should do this leads to a value becoming a norm and therefore, leading to basic assumptions. This means any set of principles a person might consider of high importance, like honesty and equality is now part of the expected behavior within a society. Some cultures are driven by their values, which in return directly affects their norms and this become what is considered as acceptable behavior. Norms and values go hand in hand and one directly affects the other. For example, a society might consider that equality is of high value to them so part of their norms reflects that belief by ensuring that everyone...

History ( Germany Between 1918-1934

...I believe that German fascism gained mass appeal because of the political and economic crises. I believe this for a variety of reasons such as the inflation that crippled the Germans, and the Great Depression that crushed them. If the following events did not occur I truly believe the Nazis would have remained clowns. The treaty for many Germans was extremely unfair, which is evident in a few of its main points”6,600 million euro debt, 100million per year for 66 years”. Demilitarization limited the German army to 100,000 men , loss of overseas colonies and parts of Germany that favoured industrial activities. All of these points utterly destroyed Germany. The demilitarization meant a huge increase in unemployment, the loss of land and colonies meant less goods, less people, and the gargantuan debt which could not be payed, this all lead to hyperinflation. Germany was unable to pay the enormous debt, and Germany already had a large amount of debt thanks to Kaiser Wilhelm 2 (war bonds) Because of this Germany began printing money, this decreased the value and caused a massive inflation. Before the war July 1914 Germanys currency was 4 marks to the us dollar after 1918 July it was 40, the next year double, the year after that 500, the year after 350,000 by November 1923 it was 4,000,000,000,000 marks to the dollar. Money was all but worthless, people no longer wanted or used it, instead using possessions such as baskets which worked as a sort of trade or exchange. Many people...

...Indholdsfortegnelse Indledning. Redegørelse omkring filmen med fokus på bandemiljøet. Analysere filmens teknikske virkemidler. Diskussions spørgsmål – hvad er bandeexit. Konklusion. Indledning.

...The Spanish Taxation System and the Manila Food Market: Indications of an Early Commercialized Economy LUIS ALONSO ALVAREZ Translated from Spanish by Trinidad O. Regala Before the Spanish conquest, Filipinos thrived on a system of mere subsistence. The Spaniards realized that in order for them to effectively maintain control of the colony they must improve the production of food and resources in the islands. To do this, the Spaniards instituted revenue-generating measures such as systematic taxation and compulsory sale of agricultural products to the colonial government. Later, having been introduced to better farming equipment, the natives were able to practice a more intensive form of agriculture that enabled them to sell to Chinese traders at higher market prices and fulfill their tax requirements. The 16th century galleon trade and a war against the Dutch, both of which required a vast array of construction materials and manpower, put an enormous strain on food and supply requirements and prompted colonial authorities to implement more coercive taxation and forced labor. By the 17th century, a survey of Manila provisions revealed growing mercantilism and a stable food supply owed to improved trading and surplus from trade and friar farmlands. No longer dependent on galleon trade, new patterns of consumption, foreign demand for agrarian resources and a legitimate labor market at the beginning of the 19th century signaled the era of modernization and growth for the Philippine...
