Lost and Forgotten Many times people realize that if they miss out on something, they can never take it back. What if that something is a generation of soldiers, an army of men losing knowledge, morals, friends, memories and family. Every absence is something less they learn or realize in life. When that generation’s replacement is war, a boy’s simple life turns into a man with formidable memories and a constant effort to survive. The innocent human ways are forgotten, and violence becomes the replacement. The liveliness and spirit that once was in the heart is now full of their loneliness and desolation. It’s almost as if their life is on pause, and they never know when it could resume. The plot of All Quiet on The Western Front exemplifies …show more content…
At this point, their bodies are fragile, their spirit is empty, and they wonder why they should live any longer. They find no value in life, and when the freedom returns all that crosses their minds is confusion. In the last chapter, this statement clearly represents the theme when Paul mentions, "Now if we go back we will be weary, broken, burnt out, rootless and without hope. We will not be able to find our way anymore” (294). The war is like a maze; it can be intriguing, but once people become lost during the time inside, finding their way back almost seems impossible to achieve. Moreover, war is something that people have to take part in in order to understand. Seeing and hearing about it isn’t enough. For that reason, the generation of men in war become easily forgotten, as Paul says in this quote, “And men will not understand us...now it will return to its old occupations, and the war will be forgotten- and the generation that has grown up before us will be strange to us and will push us aside” (294). War itself is memorable, but what people tend to forget are the actual soldiers. The generations of men in war will pass over like a breeze, and sadly very few people actually know the hardship of being in battle. Being in the shoes of Paul, a soldier, this is extremely difficult because not only do they lose a generation of their life, but their generation is forgotten as …show more content…
The timeline of the soldiers lives goes in the order of peacetime, wartime, and postwar time and each period affects the emotions and personality of the soldier differently throughout the book. Although, people’s views on soldiers are vastly different from that of an actual soldier; citizens back home see them sacrificing themselves for their country and that they will come back unwounded and heroes. The reality is that no one comes out of war without scars, no one comes home unbroken. They come back heroes, but the celebration only lasts for a short period of time. The sacrifice looks as if it is easy, but it ends up changing their entire lives, and recovery to normal life is so far away it isn’t even realistic. The country gets the reward instead of the soldier that risks their life. The only reward they are getting is for others, but when it comes down to the individual soldier, all that is left is a lost, confused man with the feeling of no place in

All Quiet On The Western Front Literary Analysis

...Max’s Note: The themes of these stories cannot be accurately compared because of the time period and acceptable behavioral differences. 1918 is not the same thing as 700 BC, and the themes of the books reflect upon the behavioral differences. All Quiet on the Western Front (Erich M. Remarque) and Perseus (Bernard Evslin) were two very different stories with two very different themes. All Quiet on the Western Front had many different ways of portraying its darker themes, one example of this is derived from the quote “It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war.”(5). This obviously portrays that war is a crushing force that destroys the participants inside and out....

The Responsibility of Intelletuals

...the question of war guilt. He asks the question: To what extent were the German or Japanese people responsible for the atrocities committed by their governments? And, quite properly, he turns the question back to us: To what extent are the British or American people responsible for the vicious terror bombings of civilians, perfected as a technique of warfare by the Western democracies and reaching their culmination in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, surely among the most unspeakable crimes in history. To an undergraduate in 1945-46—to anyone whose political and moral consciousness had been formed by the horrors of the 1930s, by the war in Ethiopia, the Russian purge, the “China Incident,” the Spanish Civil War, the Nazi atrocities, the Western reaction to these events and, in part, complicity in them—these questions had particular significance and poignancy. With respect to the responsibility of intellectuals, there are still other, equally disturbing questions. Intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments, to analyze actions according to their causes and motives and often hidden intentions. In the Western world, at least, they have the power that comes from political liberty, from access to information and freedom of expression. For a...

...International University, India Abstract Though organizational politics has been perceived as a threat; negatively influencing levels of staff retention and work productivity, hardly any studies have focused on the employee’s attitude towards the perceived players and the survival strategies in such an environment in the Indian setting. This study aims to explore the employee’s perception of organizational politics, the phase that they go through while working and the ways they adopt to cope up with it, in a sample of 26 employees working in three different automobile manufacturing companies. Qualitative methods have been used in order to understand the feelings and experiences of employees while working in a politically influenced environment. Analysis of the data was done through phenomenological principles. Findings of this study led to the emergence of four major themes namely perceived threat, attitude towards the players, Coping Strategies and intentions to leave. This study has tried to bring out the emotional circumstances that employees go through while working in a politically influenced environment. Key words: Organization, politics, employees, perception and intention Introduction There is a bit of Machiavelli in every one of us. An environment where everyone agrees with each other is a rare phenomenon. People are generally favorably biased towards people they know, like and trust, even when they are trying to be impartial. North American Fiction

...another definition that gathers this essence: American Literature is the one that represents the Americanism, the singularity of the USA philosophy and culture. This way, instead of focusing on who the author is, it is focused on the content of the writing. In that which concerns Fiction, the following documents are the ones considered as narrative: Speeches Letters Short Stories Essays Political Documents Sermons Novels Diaries 1 FIRST LITERARY EXPRESSIONS The first documents in which the idea of Americanism is very present are the Sermons. They respond to the strict Protestantism settled in the New Continent after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers and Puritans in the Mayflower (1620) and the Arabella (1630). They established a theocratic community whose main and only point of reference was the Bible. That is why the idea of the ‘city upon a hill’ is still very present in American mentality. As we all know, their community was also governed by the concept of Predestination. This belief was based in the idea that we are saved or condemned since the very moment we are born or even, since the very moment when the Universe was created. Therefore, the way they confronted Good and Evil was that of effect-cause: if you are one of those who were going to be saved you certainly behaved as they were...
