All Summer in a Day

Children grow up not knowing how the world works. They don’t understand why people are different from each other, and sometimes they react to differences with jealousy or cruelty. In All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury, the children are jealous and even angry with Margot because she has had experiences that they have not, and she suffers unfairly as a result.

You could write a literary analysis about the Figurative Language in this story:

The children pressed together LIKE so many roses, so many weeds intermixed. Simile

They were remembering gold or a yellow crayon or a coin large enough to build the world with. Metaphor

They always awoke to the tatting drum, the endless snaking of clear bead necklaces upon the roof. Metaphor

They turned on themselves, like a feverish wheel, all fumbling spokes. Simile

She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghosts. Metaphor

It’s like a penny. Simile

The great jungle that covered Venus, that grew and never stopped growing, tumultuously, even as you watched it. It was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of fleshlike week, wavering, flowering in this brief spring. Metaphor

You could write an essay about what Ray Bradbury is saying about mob mentality in "All Summer and a Day".

"All Summer in a Day" shows Margot, the quiet, invisible outcast of the class, being singled out by the rest of her classmates, after telling everyone the sun would come out. The sun never comes out on Venus, making this an extraordinary deal. The deal was too much for the class, and the students display a term called "mob mentality." Mob mentality is, unfortunately, very common within society. Human beings don't like dramatic changes in their environment, especially when it is out of the ordinary. When someone comes along and...

All Summer in a Day

...All Summer in a Day  A Short Story Analysis    Have you ever felt a desperate crave for something? If you have, you are similar to Margot fromAll Summer in a Day, a science fiction by Bradbury. The theme of mans inhumanity to man isdescribed by the setting and characterization of Margot. The story takes place in an underground city on Venus. The sun only comes outevery seven years on Venus. Therefore, the children in Margots class are excited when the findout the sun is coming the next day. William, an insolent boy in Margots class, later confrontsMargot. He tries to convince her that the sun wont come out. She does not listen to his ranting, and therefore he and the other children grab Margot and lock her in a closet. During the time tosun is up, the children go crazy and are filled with joy. Then after the sun sets, they aregenuinely guilty and let Margot out. The setting and characterization connect with each other to form a chain reactionthat leads to the theme or inhumanity between men. For example, Margot is a very quiet girl, which is why people pick on her easily. She also has knowledge of the sun, which affects theother children and makes them envious. Her actions are very small, or not there at all. Forexample, when William pushed her, she did nothing in reply. Her most dominant trait, though,is her fragileness.  Bradbury made her actions lack strength and backbone. For this reason, andher knowledge of the sun, the children make her an outcast. The......

...The children all stepped back as Margot slowly came out of the closet. With their heads down in shame, the cold not see the clear expression of pain of Margot’s small features. “The sun,” she whispered quietly, barely audible and without emotion.”The sun.” Suddenly and without warning, all the frustration and pain that had been welling up inside Margot exploded, like a balloon popped by a needle. As these emotions turned into tears, a new emotion began to seep into her soul. This emotion was new to Margot; it was deep, pure, and longing. Every tear that escaped Margot’s eyes reminded her of all the things she wanted. Every tear also took a small shard of pain away from Margot, until there was no more pain and no more tears to be shed. After the last desolated tear rolled down her face, she silently looked up. Sixteen pairs of concerned eyes met her. One by one, the children wrapped their arms around Margot’s body. She soon realized that these were the people who had taken her chance to see the sun. Yet, she felt no resentment or hate, just coldness inside of her. A girl with thin black hair walked over to Margot. She cleared her throat nervously. “It was beautiful,” stammered the girl. “It was just like you said it would be.” Margot could only nod; her voice seemed to have slipped away. “Excuse me,” Margot said meekly, forcing out the words.”I have to go home now.” The children nodded. They let her pass without argument. Marot walked over to the door, and then was...

All Summer In A Day Analysis

...Ray Bradbury’s dystopian story, “All Summer in a Day,” takes place on Venus—a planet where it rains all of the time. Margot, a recent arrival on Venus, remembers what the other children cannot. Grieving the loss of the sun, she remembers its beauty and warmth. The other children are jealous that she even remembers. This conflict creates a sad situation for all. Ray Bradbury creates the theme that when people cannot get over their own pain, they wind up hurting others and he illustrates this by using sentence variety and description. Jealousy and the pain that results from it shines through the story as a central issue impacting all characters. When people cannot get over their own pain, they hurt others is a theme demonstrated by the characters’...

Winter vs. Summer

...10:30am 28 September 2014 Winter vs. Summer Winter and summer have their own seasonal weather, activities, and attire. The main factor is temperature, the weather transition affects what activities people can do and what attire we have to wear in order to be comfortable. We can’t do all activities such as snowboarding or jet skiing all 365 days of the year, doing this in the wrong season would be uncomfortable and possibly unsafe. This is why our clothing must coordinate with the weather, if we wear the wrong clothing, our bodies can overheat or freeze in the wrong clothing. Both seasons have its own individual characteristics that change our environment, which then causes our choice of activity, attire, and our driving route to our destination to change in serveral ways. California doesn’t have incredibly high or low forecasts, but it can be hard to deal with in ways that affect our routes we take and timing to our destination. Why? The weather. On winter mornings, the gloomy, colder weather comes in causing drivers to spend time waiting for their windshield wipers and defrost system to melt the frozen ice. Specifically, the rainy, foggy weather can cause decreased vision making it difficult to drive. When it rains, people tend to drive even slower due to the slippery roads which then can pile up to a lot of traffic. The weather becomes a hassle to deal with as we try to drive safely and arrive quickly to our destination. Yet in the summer, people don’t have to worry......

No Summer Breaks

...3/21/13 Grammar Essay Many people believe that summer break is more interesting than school, but in school you can learn more. For example, if you have all summer in school you would have a longer time for learning. Students can benefit from school because they don’t use electronics all day long. For instance, if you are sitting in front of the computer all day your brain will turn to mush or waste. The students are putting their brains to work doing schoolwork or math problems for example. Students will also get homework that keeps the students busy. If we did not have a summer break I think we should have at least holiday breaks. For example, we should have Easter, Christmas breaks, or important holidays. We should not have a summer break because we can learn more. We would have a little bit of electronics which means we are kept busy. This is why I think we should not have a summer break. 3/21/13 Grammar Essay Many people believe that summer break is more interesting than school, but in school you can learn more. Argumentative Essay: Year-Round School

...Year round school Last August, I was having the time of of my life with all my friends playing some backyard football. When suddenly a school ad came on the radio and we began to talk about school coming up.This gave me chills especially because I did not know anything about the upcoming school year.Weeks later, sure enough it was the first week of my junior year and the most dreaded words a high schooler wants to hear is “pop quiz” or “test” and like I thought it was on what we knew from last year. As I was taking the quiz I could remember nothing but summer fun. As we got our quizzes back I realized I had failed. And as I thought we were going to review last year for the first couple weeks I was wrong we jumped right into this year's curriculum...

500 Days of Annie Hall

...500 Days of Annie Hall Romantic Comedy contains the favorable elements of both romance and comedy genres. Some notables are funny jokes and humorous plots, which surround a love story or the search of a true love. Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977) and Marc Webb’s 500 Days of Summer (2009) are both movies that fall under the genre “Romantic Comedy”. These two movies are connected in many ways, for each film contains relatable characters and effective narrative techniques to portray a realistic relationship. Each film is also able to portray the differences between the reality and expectations of a relationship in humorous ways that allow them to be called a romantic comedy. Alvy and Tom are two different characters with separate mindsets. In 500 Days of Summer, Tom Hansen, despite his passion to be an architect is an unmotivated greeting card writer who deeply believes in the concept of true love and soul mates. Whereas in Annie Hall, Alvy Singer is a pessimistic comedian and control freak that is seen changing things to benefit him. Both characters due to their attitudes on life and relationships bring forth different aspects that make them such unique and likable characters. Tom strongly believes that he will never be happy until he meets the person that he believes is ‘the one’ for him. Whereas with Alvy he pushes Annie and doesn’t fully accept either Annie’s insecurities or support her as she finds ways to work through them. Summer and Annie, like their male......

Year Round School

...go to class the same number of days as kids on a conventional school plan. What’s the difference? A year-round school timetable is spread out more evenly throughout the year. “The traditional calendar is divided into nine months of instruction and three of vacation during the summer. Year-round calendars break these long instructional/ vacation blocks into a pattern of sixty days of instruction followed by twenty days of vacation.” (CA Dept of Education). Students who receive more frequent breaks don't receive a customary ten to twelve-week summer break. Removing any kind of long break from school can enhance a child’s educational accomplishment. Long summers are known for "summer slide," or the decay of cerebral abilities and loss of information throughout the longer break. Summer-slide is different across grade levels, subject matter and family income, according to the National Summer Learning Association. However, it still affects all children in some way. If a student does not have a long break, it helps prevent summer learning loss. Summer learning loss is a significant issue for children. All children – rich or poor - experience a slide in math over the summer. The slide is different for everyone. Despite the fact that it may appear fun, an extended summer break can frequently prompt weariness. Year-round school wipes out the need to fill the twelve weeks of summer break with exercises to keep children intrigued and locked in. If the summer break is not organized,......

Seasons

...angle of approximately 23.4 degrees. Thus, at any given time during summer or winter, one part of the planet is more directly exposed to the rays of the Sun. This exposure alternates as the Earth revolves in its orbit. Therefore, at any given time, regardless of season, the northern and southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons. The effect of axis tilt is observable from the change in day length, and altitude of the Sun at noon (the culmination of the Sun), during a year. Summer: Summer is the warmest of the four temperate seasons. Summer is the warmest season of the year when the sun shines directly on one half of the world. Usually, July and August are the hottest months of the summer season. Crops, trees, and other plants reach their full maturity in summer. Summer is traditionally associated with hot dry weather, but this does not occur in all regions. Summer is one of the seasons of a year which is the warmest. It falls between the seasons of spring and autumn. Summer is generally known to be the season which has the hottest and longest days in a year. The summer nights are usually smaller than those of winter. It is a very good season for outdoor activities like vacationing, swimming or simply lazing on the beach. Various tropical summer fruits like pineapples, watermelons, mangoes, berries, melons, and vegetables are abundant in summer. ...Summer vs Winter in Wisconsin Tricia Pawlowski COM 170 Summer vs Winter in Wisconsin Do you like summer in Wisconsin or is it winter that gets you excited? Do you like frigid temperatures or is it the hot sun that gets your goat? For me, summer is where it’s at. I am patient for 272 days every year waiting for June 21st to come around (even though I start my summer as soon as the local schools let out), and when it does, let the good times roll and the festivities begin! Winter, on the other hand, is a dreadfully cold and treacherous event that I would really rather not deal with or talk about; I will talk about it though just to let everyone know how I truly feel about it. The weather itself is an absolute disgrace and the season in general is horrible (except for Christmas, snowmobiling and sledding)! For some people, winter is their favorite season, but for me, it is summer and its glorious weather that gets my vote. In the summer, the days start to get longer; the sun rises earlier and goes to bed later. There are sounds of children running around playing tag, screeching hysterically because they are about to be “it”. Neighborhood dogs are barking incessantly because of all the commotion and just because they can. The air starts to smell sweet, like that of freshly cut grass. To me, one of the best parts of summer is the sweet smell of freshly cut grass. Nothing beats walking out of your house on a warm summer afternoon,...
