Allston, is a Boston neighborhood located on the western edge, which is bordered by the cities of Brookline and Cambridge. The area does not have adequate transportation to accommodate the growing population. The Green “B” line serves provides transportation from Boston, on the East, to Brighton and Newton, on the West. However, there is very little transportation North-South transportation, connecting North Allston to the rest of Allston, Downtown Boston and Brookline. Furthermore, there are a lack of support for other modes of transportation other than cars. Bike lanes in the area are either nonexistent or unsafe. Furthermore, many large streets have intersections that are unsafe for pedestrians. The I-90(Mass Turnpike) is a major highway that runs through Allston. The highway serves as the major highway for the area serving driver, pedestrians and cyclist in the areas. The highway also serves the main access point to Boston for many commuters from the surrounding suburbs. For years there have been concerns raised by regular users of the highway as well as residents of Allston about the failing viaducts of the highway. In October of 2013, Massachusetts Department of transportation announces the Mass Pike Straightening project, intended to reconstruct the viaduct that was falling apart. Residents mobilized around the idea of “The People Pike”, which is a vision of the project that would improve public transportation, build safe bike lanes and make intersections safer for pedestrians (Aspelund & Barber Grossi, 2014).
