The Feasibility of Aloe Vera as Lipbalm

...ntroduction The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty, medicinal and skin care properties. The name Aloe vera derives from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true.” 2000 years ago, the Greek scientists regarded Aloe vera as the universal panacea. The Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of immortality.” Today, the Aloe vera plant has been used for various purposes in dermatology. History Aloe vera has been used for medicinal purposes in several cultures for millennia: Greece, Egypt, India, Mexico, Japan and China.1 Egyptian queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra used it as part of their regular beauty regimes. Alexander the Great, and Christopher Columbus used it to treat soldiers’ wounds. The first reference to Aloe vera in English was a translation by John Goodyew in A.D. 1655 of Dioscorides’ Medical treatise De Materia Medica.2 By the early 1800s, Aloe vera was in use as a laxative in the United States, but in the mid-1930s, a turning point occurred when it was successfully used to treat chronic and severe radiation dermatitis.2 Plant The botanical name of Aloe vera is Aloe barbadensis miller. It belongs to Asphodelaceae (Liliaceae) family, and is a shrubby or arborescent, perennial, xerophytic, succulent, pea- green color plant. It grows mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In India, it is found in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil...

Insecticidal Activity of Aloe Vera

...Chapter I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Mosquitoes are insect vectors responsible for the transmission of parasitic and viral infections to millions of people worldwide (Kovendan, et al., 2012). These vectors cause a major health hazard by transmitting vector-borne diseases especially in tropical countries. In a tropical country like the Philippines, dengue outbreaks have shown a very alarming number of cases. The National Epidemiology Center of the Philippines' Department of Health reports a total of 132,046 dengue cases from January to 13 October 2012. This is 24.92% higher compared to the same time period in 2011 (WHO, 2013). Of the total cases, 20.42% came from the National Capital Region (NCR), with highest contributors from Quezon City (7,754 cases), Manila (4,379 cases) and Caloocan City (2,967 cases). Next to NCR, Region III and Region IV-A registered the highest number of cases, which are 15.79% and 15.66% respectively, to the overall figure. These three areas, collectively characterized as highly urbanized and densely-populated, were consistently reported as the three most dengue endemic regions in the country over the past years (WHO, 2013). Mosquito control, in view of their medical importance, assumes global importance (Subramaniam, et al., 2012). In the context of ever increasing trend to use more powerful synthetic insecticides to achieve immediate results in the control of the said vector, an alarming increase in the vector’s physiological...

Film as Mirror in Hitchcock's Vertigo

...Film as Mirror in Hitchcock's Vertigo Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo is a master's class in subtle and effective filmmaking - its noirish tale of obsession and loss is considered one of his best works. This is due in no small part to the directors' use of the various elements of film as a mirror. Hitchcock intends to create a sense of repetition and a cyclical nature to the life of the characters in the film; following Scottie (James Stewart) through his descent and ascent into madness deals significantly with themes of duality and obsession. Furthermore, the use of film as a mirror onto ourselves is made very clear in the audience's relation to Scottie throughout Vertigo. In this paper, three instances of the film as mirror will be detailed in Vertigo, as well as how they inform the concept of film as mirror through their existence and varying properties. Metz describes film as a mirror in that "the cinema involves us in the imaginary: it drums up all perception, but to switch it immediately over into its own absence, which is nonetheless the only signifier present" (p. 250). The audience, like a child, sees themselves as an other; by identifying itself with its 'other' other, it can separate itself from that subject and look at the mirror objectively. In the case of Vertigo, the 'other' is Scottie, and look at his visage on the screen as a mirror unto itself. Thus, we can project our own feelings and insecurities onto Scottie, which helps us relate to his desperation and madness...
