Not Alone

...Not alone Lucy and Emily have always been very close and each other’s best friends. That is quite typical of twins. Either they cannot live without each other or they can be as different as night and day. Lucy and Emily have always been the first. Even at the age of 24 they still lived together. They have rented a small roof apartment in an old post office from an old lady who had to move to a mental hospital after living alone for to long. It was the only tall building in the town so they had a great view over the sea. Tonight was like every other night. They made dinner, mainly pasta, and ate it in front of the TV and sat there until they fell asleep. They did not have a lot of friends nor family. An hour after midnight, Emily woke up feeling a little sick. Emily could not fall asleep again and looked at the alarm clock. It was 8 Am but still pitch-dark outside. Maybe it was solstice? She decided not to think further about it and instead she made breakfast. While she was cooking the eggs she listened to the increasing storm outside. It had started raining a lot now. Emily did not like to be alone when it was stormy, so she woke up Lucy. They ate the breakfast while watching TV. Suddenly the lights went out and the TV went flicking in black and white. The twins stopped chewing and looked at each other with big eyes. Quickly Lucy found some candlelight and lighted them up. They took a look at the clock again. It was 9.30 Am. How could it possibly still be dark outside? Emily...

...Loyalty And Professional Rights (ESSAY #6) Introduction The relationship between engineers and employers has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. This essay describes some of the recent debate regarding employee rights and loyalty. Section one deals with the legal environment. Court cases dealing with employee loyalty and its limits have changed the legal aspects of employment dramatically in the last twenty years. A sketch of those changes will be made here. Section two discusses some theoretical attempts at resolving the tension between company loyalty and public responsibility. Finally, the third section describes actual policies that different corporations and government agencies have used to deal with the issue of employee rights. Legal and Regulatory Environment The trend in the law is toward increased recognition of employee rights. Until recently, American law has been governed by the common-law doctrine of "employment at will," where, in the absence of a contract, an employer can discharge an employee at any time and for whatever reason the employer considers relevant. This doctrine determined the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's position in a 1967 case of Geary v. United States Steel Corp1. Mr. Geary was not educated as an engineer, but he had 14 years of engineering experience with U.S. Steel. Mr. Geary became convinced that a new type of pipe that U.S. Steel was using was unsafe under high pressure. He attempted to make his concerns known to management, but...

Confidence - the Seed of Advancement

...occupation for you. Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that an idea or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Self-confidence is having confidence in oneself. Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail or not try because they lack it and those with it may succeed because they have it rather than because of an innate ability (Wikipedia). Just like a seed planted on soil, confidence is like a seed which we should plant in our minds and hearts and which requires our utmost attention in enabling it grow. Below are three ways by which you and I can grow this seed (Thanks to Huffington Post): 1. Affirm that you are not alone: What that means, is that we often abandon ourselves, and that creates a feeling of tremendous insecurity. You are the one who has got to have your back and heart. There are three...

Spiritual Gifts

...with people who may have problems that others might feel uncomfortable with. I am also a very good listener. I love to share the Gospel with others and bring the lost to know Jesus Christ. I am truly blessed to have these gifts that God has given me. PART TWO: Specifically, how can you use your gifts at this time? How might you misuse your gifts? Be specific. There are many ways I can use my gifts today. In my Church there are people who often come to me to “unload” what’s going on in their Lives. I am always there to listen and give them the best advice I can. I show mercy by going with a group from the church to visit the ones who are shut-ins and letting them know that we care for them and that they are not alone. Outside the church I volunteer for Domestic and Sexually abused women’s shelter. I do a weekly Bible study and I teach some of them how to cook. I soon will be taking the required training to be a Christian Counselor. I also post Scripture, Devotionals, and prayers on my face book page. There are many ways I can misuse my gifts as well. With being capable of earning trust quickly, and empathizing with people, I need to be very careful with caring for males. I could easily be fooled into thinking that I’m caring for a female, and it could easily become unhealthy very quickly. I need to be careful that I don’t push a solution on someone who...

Stress at Work

...Stress at Work Have you ever had a job or position that left you feeling pressure, anxiety, discontent, or completely disconnected? You are not alone; nearly everyone who is employed has experienced those feelings at one time or another in their life. The world, in which we live, is fast paced and ever changing. Companies have grown increasingly demanding and as a result the workload has increased while the workforce has not. As less people are used in the work force the workload is ever increasing. The stress at work can eventually spill over into all aspects of that person’s life thus causing more damage and further issues. The key is to recognize the stress and the impact it has and use the best way to manage stress while still being able to adapt to a changing working environment. Recognizing the Stress In order to solve any issue, we must first acknowledge the problem and then understand what is causing us to have that problem. Stress can creep up on anyone; it can remain un-detected for quite some time. Our body is a wonderfully constructed marvel of engineering brilliance. More often than not, when something goes wrong, there are warning signs exhibited. While it is very common to have busy days at work, there is a difference between being busy and being stressed. The various signs of stress may include frequent headaches, stomachaches, elevated blood pressure, lack of sleep, depression, and many other symptoms. There are a multitude of things that can contribute...

Responsibility

...Getting Started, No Looking Back Thesis Statement: The word, “College” can be intimidating all by itself; then to add the word, “Personal Responsibility”, can make anyone fearful but also excited at the same time. Now you start thinking, there’s no turning back now, I am a grown up, and start to think, I can do this; how hard can it be? But, the real learning starts, the real study habits are formed, and the real accountability has just begun. Introduction: While in some of our minds, getting started on any assignment, particularly doing a paper is hard to do, but can come easy to others. I have to remind myself that I am in (or should I say, back in) college now and there will be no one there to hold my hand. It is called, “personal responsibility” I. What is personal responsibility: Personal responsibility owns up to whatever is set before you, big or small, a little or a lot. It is holding your own self accountable for your actions, because all of your actions will have consequences behind them. In college life, keeping yourself on track is solely up to you, making the grade can be the difference between passing or failing, receiving a degree or not. II. Personal responsibility and college success: Personal responsibility is key to college success even more so than ever, there is so much competition in the workforce now. Good work ethics is a must and in college life this characteristic trait is a good format to get started. Looking back to your youth...

Rilke Alone

...Alone: Indicating that something is confined to the specified subject or recipient; without others' help or participation. Aloneness is an abstract concept that is interpreted by humans in various ways, based on a person's experiences and philosophy on the subject of Aloneness. Even though it can be described in diverse fashions, the attribute of aloneness has basic ideas regardless to the interpreter’s feelings or beliefs on. The poems "Alone" and "I am much too alone in this world, yet not alone" are great examples of how aloneness can be made to feel the same, and different. Aside from the authors' interpretation of aloneness the two poems are alike and different though the ways the authors use figurative language, and the structural shifts...

Go It Alone

...Speech on Go It Alone Many of us, including myself, have owned a business before and many of us have struggled to make ends meet in your current day job. Owning a business can be a fun and an exciting adventure and at the same time, if not done right it can be hard and scary. I recently read a book called “Go It Alone” by Bruce Judson, this book can make starting your own business a more pleasant and successful one. I am going to be telling you some of the key points of what I learned in hopes that you will not make some of the same mistakes I made when starting up my first business. First of all the author, Bruce Judson, is one of the nation’s leading experts on entrepreneurship. He is on the Faculty at the Yale School of Management and has had several go it alone businesses over the years. In this book he goes through several principals that every entrepreneur should implement in starting their own business. I feel that if run your business with these principals in mind, you have a much better chance of hitting your goals and eventually becoming successful. One of the main principals Judson pushes is the importance of keeping your day job. Entrepreneurs are at the heart, risk takers, and that is partially true. But as one top CEO explains, “they do everything they can to limit the costs and failure.” If we are actively managing risks "While they are still refining their business concept (1) they reduce risk by gaining as much experience as possible with paying customers...

Bowling Alone

...Critical Analysis of Bowling Alone Bowling Alone defends a thesis that in the 1960’s and 70’s, something occurred in the US that caused a change. In the 20th century for the majority of the time, American were greatly involved within their community. However, since Americans started to pull away from one another and their community, the “community vitality” weakened. Putnam uses bowling as an illustration for his claim. By using statistics and charts, Putnam compares the participation of individuals in bowling to those who actually are in league bowling; the percentage declining by 40% while bowlers themselves increased by 10. The concept of “bowling alone” is not a literal term but comparatively speaking they are bowling along because informal groups, which are typical in most cases, can not replenish social capitol. Still Bowling Alone happened to fall under the original Bowling Alone 15th Anniversary and it revisits some civic disengagement as well as touches on the after 9/11 generation and compares their involvement in politics compared to their elders when they were their age. The newer generation was revived as far as its involvement in their community after tragedy struck the mainland as well as some presidency mile stones. Putnam discusses a threat to America due to the a growing gap between the youth which involved their self-esteem, family support, social trust civic and religious engagement; all of which threaten social mobility and cohesion. Within my community...

Connected but Alone

...Connect, But Alone Does too much of a good thing ever become a problem? Sherry Turkle was trying to answer that question in her TED Talk, “Connected, But Alone?” Turkle was once a huge fan of the innovations of the Internet and she was also in awe of it but she realizes the negative effects of having an instant connection to anyone, anywhere, anything. Turkle gives examples from research she performed to show that technology has become very addicting and that we have become very secluded because of our overuse. She also gets her audience to examine their own personal experiences. What Turkle is showing from her research may make a lot of people unhappy. People will be unhappy because no one agrees to have a problem, especially in the case of addiction. Turkle wants to shine a spotlight on technology addiction, though it may not be as bad as a drug or alcohol addiction. Nevertheless, it is still an addiction. Turkle knows she has to establish credibility in order for her to diagnose mankind with this condition. Turkle uses two different appeals to make this happen. Her first appeal was to use emotion, while her second was informing the audience of who she is by sharing her background with them. In her first appeal, she shared a text from her daughter at the beginning of her presentation. The text message read, “Mom, you will rock.” “I love this. Getting that text was like getting a hug,” she told her audience (Turkle). Just by sharing that little conversation between her and...
