Negotiation Exercise 1
Sara is a customer representative that cares about her job and her goal is to make sure that each customer leaves with a positive experience when shopping at Alpha Electronics. She seems to try and see both sides of a situation and is focused on resolving conflict, when it involves customer returns. She prioritizes her objectives and goes over and beyond the company’s expectations and tries not to lose customers’ when they become dissatisfied with the products that they’ve purchased. She examines the alternatives and selects fair standards when dealing with customers. (Garrett, 2007)
John is your typical customer that wants to be satisfied with his purchases. He seems to have high expectations when it comes to interacting with a company representative and probably researches each product before he purchases it. He’s probably a serial returner and has developed a winning strategy that involves specific tactics and counter tactics when he returns merchandise he doesn’t like. When there is a problem with an item that he has acquired, he seems to take it personally and wants the situation resolved immediately. (Garrett, 2007)
Sara’s goals and objectives as a returns employee are to make sure that the customer leaves the store with another piece of merchandise. She’s pleasant with each customer, she listens to each problem and she tries to appease them by offering small discounts for their trouble, whether it may have been big or small. She is sensative and takes things to heart when someone attacks her employer or fellow employees. Her main focus is to make sure that customer returns to that store for future purchases.
The main goals and objectives of the customers that shop at Alpha Electronics is to purchase electronic products. They also shop at the store because it is convenient and probably provides all of the major brands that they are looking for. The store offers good incentives and a friendly customer experience. The store has a generous return policy, they can return, exchange or receive store credit for items that they are not satisfied with.
Sara’s goals differ from that of her customer’s because she is working to make sure the company get’s the better end of the deal. She knows that if the customer is not satisfied with the stores return policy, then they may not come back to the store and relay their negative experience to other customers. The customer’s main focus is to either return their merchandise and get their money back or exchange it for another item.
If I were a customer return’s employee for Alpha electronics and encountered John as a customer, I would have researched how many times he’s returned items to the store. This falls in line with planning the negotiation. Stores typically, do not allow customers to return opened electronic equipment. If an item is defective then they usually can exchange it for the same exact one or receive store credit. Once I had that particular information in hand, I would have offered the same incentive that Sara did, 10% off a similar item. Then, when John expressed his disdain for that offer, I would have presented him with proof that this was not his first return and he has been given allowances in the past. If he still was not satisfied with the offer, I would have just offered him store credit and if he didn’t take that, I would have gone over the store policy and reiterated that I am making an exception for him.
I think Sara diverted from her negotiation plan by allowing John to bate her into giving him 50% off a similar item. She knew that the discount would not favor the stores bottom line and could possibly affect the daily sales. The first mistake that Sara made was to ask John, “ what would make the him happy “and not offer an apology, although she knew the sales associate did nothing wrong. I would have given him additional coupons for future purchases and provided the apology myself.
If I were the customer in that type of situation, I would’ve requested to speak to the store manager. Once they brought over a person authorized to negotiate on the stores behalf, I would have explained my expectations about the item that I purchased and what I thought was lost in translation between myself and the store associate. I would not have demanded an apology but would have expected that I receive a gift card for a future purchase or a coupon for a discount on another item that I purchased that same day. I believe that Sara did what she could to satisfy John but she gave in to his demands. She did not want the situation to escalate so she offered an incentive that did not favor her company. She should have been better prepared before negotiating with John. He seems to have had experience with returns and knew what tactics to use to achieve his objectives. Sara became too emotionally and allowed her emotions to cloud her judgment. She should’ve remembered the main goal of the negation, know what’s negotiable and what’s not. She allowed herself to be compromised by literally giving away merchandise and she should’ve walked away from the negotiations when he demanded 50% off of his purchase. (Garrett, 2007)
In conclusion, Sara should have followed the 45 practices to improve results. She would’ve been better prepared and she would’ve been able to counter John’s tactics. I am sure she has learned from this experience and will be better prepared in the future when she encounters an irate customer that is hard to please. (Garrett, 2007)

Modern Cultural Artifact

...Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C Donna M. Gerron American InterContinental University Abstract It was a very hard decision deciding on which artifact to write about. It was a choice between the King Center in Atlanta Georgia and the King Memorial in Washington. The King Center has a wealth of information about Dr. King and his fight for nonviolent solutions for African Americans to be considered equal among all men. This paper is about the newest addition to the King legacy, King Memorial Monument in Washington D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C For this week’s IP we were to write about a modern day cultural artifact that best represents the culture we live in today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a brilliant man who stood up to fight for equality for African Americans in this country. Cultural Background Most people are already aware of who Dr. King was and what he stood for. His legacy will forever affect our society. Because without him we would not have an African American president, Blacks will probably still be treated as though they are second class citizens. Dr. King arranged marches, boycotts, and sit-ins. Even though he and his followers were often met with violence he continued to not lift a finger in anger towards anyone. Unfortunately some people still do think they was they did in the 60’s because they were taught that way of thinking by their parents or grandparents. Dr. King paved the way for......

In Time (Movie Review)

...In Time (Movie Review) In Time, released on 2011, is a science fiction film directed by Andrew Niccol, starring Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy. This movie has an interesting and creative concept that is still relevant today. It conjures up a future where time is money and money is time. Benjamin Franklin’s infamous quote literally turned into a currency. Everyone is born with a luminous digital clock etched on their forearm and they are genetically engineered to stop aging by the time they reach twenty-five. At that point in time, everyone has one year left to live and their clock starts counting down. Because of this, you must work to acquire more time to live. If you have thousands, even millions of years stored in your clock, you’re considered rich. On the other hand, the poor people who have little time in their hands, strive each day in order to survive. In some cases, others steal time. By simply clasping your hand with another person, you could easily transfuse or share minutes or years of your clock. When your time runs out and your watch ticks down to zero, you’ll basically die. Will Salas, played by Justin Timberlake, was a ghetto-dweller until he met a rich man named Henry Hamilton. Henry Hamilton was weary and despairing for he had already lived for more than a hundred years and so he endowed Will with over a century of his time, leaving only seconds for himself. Having so much time opened a lot of opportunities for Will. He travelled to......

Medical Paper

...MedlinePlus: Diagnosis of parkinsonian syndrome often changesSkip navigation Search Terms Diagnosis of parkinsonian syndrome often changes Reuters Health Friday, November 14, 2008 By Michelle Rizzo NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The cause of a parkinsonian syndrome is not always clear when the symptoms first appear, and the diagnosis often changes over time, according to a paper in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry. Use of rigid criteria does not necessarily help make the diagnosis. Parkinsonian syndrome refers to conditions that have the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors, stooped posture, slowness, and shuffling gait. The term is simply used to describe a patient's symptoms; Parkinson's disease may or may not be the actual cause. For instance multiple small strokes can cause a parkinsonian syndrome. "Accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is important both in clinical practice, where it will influence management, and in research, where the validity of findings may be compromised if studies include (different) conditions," Dr. Carl Counsell, of the University of Aberdeen, UK, and colleagues write. The report describes 66 patients who were followed for at least one year after an initial diagnosis of "possible or definite parkinsonian syndrome." After follow-up of around 29 months, the clinical diagnosis had changed in 22 patients (33 percent). Most of the changes (82......

Information Systems, CIMS, New York University I. Theoretical Foundation: The trading strategy implied by Bhojraj, Hribar, Picconi and McInnis’s paper from The Journal of Finance VOL. LXIV, NO. 5 • OCTOBER 2009, was to distinguish the missers, who missed analyst forecasts by one cent, and the beaters, who beat analyst forecasts by one cent. The original Idea suggested that the stock market performance of the missers will outperform that of the beaters in the long run due to the myopic behavior of beatercompanies’ management. My strategy was to simplify and replicate the result by removing most of the other restrictions placed in the original paper, such as the restriction of market cap and industry. My construction of the strategy is as follows: Pick up the S&P 100 composite index stocks and compare the analyst estimation of Earnings Per Share (EPS) to the announced EPS by individual company. If the actual EPS beat the estimation by one cent (The Beaters), we sell short the stock in the threeyear horizon. If the actual EPS miss the estimation by one cent (The Missers), we buy the stock and hold for three years. Note that the portfolio of investment is equally weighted between all component stocks. Further examination of the data shows somehow very contrasting result: For the beaters, it......
