Main Issues:
Over decentralization gives rise to an employee population, increases the administrative expenses, and there is a lack of coordination and motivation among subdivisions. It leads to poor allocation of costs, trouble with internal trade pricing and in the case of R&D focusing on useless projects. In addition, there is a lack of leadership among subdivisions due to Walters is planning to retire.
Cost of good sold is related high due to much of the equipment in the Squamish plant was very old, by 2007, only 15% of the machinery in the plant was new, efficient, numerically controlled equipment.
Alternative
1. Focus on single line productions, reduce operating cost and re-structure company by centralization
Pro: 1. Continue and enhance cost leadership strategy by decreasing product cost and operating more efficient 2. Quality and reliance will also be improved by replacing aging equipments 3. Centralization structure can enforce product line focus and improve communication among divisions. In addition, it will make incentive

Alternative Medicine

...Alternative medicine is not new. It is accepted that it pre-dates conventional medicine and it is still used by many people all over the world. I am unconvinced that it is dangerous, and feel that both alternative and conventional medicine can be useful. There are several reasons why the conventional medical community is often dismissive of alternatives.  Firstly, there has been little scientific research into such medicine, so there is a scarcity of evidence to support the claims of their supporters. Furthermore, people often try such treatment because of recommendations from friends, and therefore come to the therapist with a very positive attitude, which may be part of the reason for the cure. Moreover, these therapies are usually only useful for long-term, chronic conditions. Acute medical problems, such as accidental injury, often require more conventional methods. On the other hand, there remain strong arguments for the use of alternatives.  Despite the lack of scientific proof, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that these therapies work. In addition, far from being dangerous, they often have few or no side effects, so the worst outcome would be no change. One of the strongest arguments for the effectiveness of alternative therapies in the West is that, whilst conventional medicine is available without charge, many people are prepared to pay considerable sums for alternatives. If they were totally unhelpful, it would be surprising if this continued. I strongly...

Alternative Medicine

...Alternative Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine Nolan Roberts September 23rd, 2011 CHLH 100 Discussion: Thursday 9am Instructor: Charles Holmes When it comes to the use of alternative medicine, approximately 40 percent of the U.S. population has used alternative medicine in the past year (Nahin, Dahlhamer, and Stussman 2010). These days more people are turning to new areas when it comes to their health care and medication. Patients are looking for something different, not only because of the rising costs of conventional medicine, but also because of the dangerous side effects of conventional medicines. They are also trying to be more environmentally sound. Furthermore, people just aren't getting the care they want, or deserve, from their doctors. Alternative medicine has helped many people by giving them an alternative to conventional medicine's negative side effects, high costs and less natural development. Conventional medicine, though tested in laboratories and approved by the AMA and FDA, still has many side effects that seem to sometimes harm patients more than it helps them. This is partially due to negligent doctors who don't pay attention to all the medications their patients are taking. Also, because most of these drugs are synthetically made in a lab, rather than by nature, it can have negative effects on our bodies. They are given stamps of approval even when their side effects may harm people. It seems as long as the good they do outweighs that...

Alternative Medicines

...Alternative Medicine in the Philippines And Its Continued Popularity: A Study Bataan Peninsula State University Alternative Medicine in the Philippines And Its Continued Popularity The Philippines is one of the islands that were conquered by different countries back in the day. That is why a lot of foreign influences were brought up by those colonizations. One of them is alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is a variety of therapeutic or preventive health-care practices that are not typically taught or practiced in traditional medicinal communities and offer treatments that differ from standard medical practice. Homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture are types of alternative medicine. In particular, China was one of the countries that inhabited the Philippines. China and its traditional healing arts make up the integral part of Chinese culture. According to “The Practice of Shiatsu” (Anderson, 2008), acupuncture gradually took over in China as the primary form of medicine and traveled across Asia including the Philippines. As evidenced by the years of trade by the Philippines with China, the Philippines then inherit the traditional ways of healing through acupuncture that China practiced and it is still being practiced today. Alternative medicine was already popular back in history but it is taking popularity again nowadays. In order to understand what we know today, people go back to their roots and to the beginning of civilization. What we know...

Alternative Medicine

...Cover Page There are many other alternatives to modern methods of medical treatment. With modern medicine being the standard there must be unconventional routes that one can take to achieve the goal of good health. Those alternatives include acupuncture, herbal remedies and yoga. Though modern medicine can be diverse it also can be very complex and in contradiction with the human body. Most medicine is animal based and experimented on animals and sometimes even humans. But can our expectations be a little euphoric for positive results set on miraculous when using animal based medicines? Moreover we cannot negate the fact that modern medicine and medical treatment has helped people avoid and control diseases for several decades. Reports show that since 1970 the death rate has decreased on average of 60% and strokes and death are down 70%. Cancer has dropped 16% since 1990 and HIV/AIDS death rate has decreased more than 75% since its peak in 1995. Therefore we cannot attempt to discredit the breakthroughs and innovations of modern medicine. Some of the biggest problems we can find in the way Medicine is practiced today are: 1. Modern Western Medicine is based on a narrow “scientific” model, and arrogantly ignores and rejects therapies and entire medical systems that don’t fit this model. 2. Doctors are trained in hospitals in “crisis care” medicine, not to take care of the “walking wounded...

Alternative Medicine

...Today I am going to tell you something about alternative medicine. At the beggining I am going to present to you some basic facts about alternative medicine and then I am going to present some of the most common examples of it. Alternative medicine is a kind of medicine practice which does not involve the use of drugs It is based on unconventional belief systems and therefore differs from conventional medicine. In most cases, it does not follow generally accepted medical methods does not have a scientific explanation for it's effectiveness. Despite the fact that many of alternative treatments lack medical explanations, some have become widely accepted and practised. Commonly cited examples of alternative medicine are herbalism, homeopathy, acupuncture, and yoga. A point to take into account here is that alternative medicine covers more than just these 4 examples. But I chose them as I assumed you are more or less already familiar with them. The form of alternative medicine which has the longest tradition is herbalism. Herbalism can be also refered to as botanical medicine. It is based on the use of plants and plant extracts. These include aromatic substances that are useful to the maintenance of health in humans. Another branch of alternative medicine is acupuncture. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin needles into specific body points to improve health and well-being. There are different types of acupuncture such as Classical Chinese, Japanese, and they...

Alternative Fuels

...Alternative Fuels, Why bother? Over the years, fossil fuels have been the most popular form of fuel utilized in our every day transportation needs. Although fossil fuels are effective as our current energy source, the time is approaching where society will have to shift from fossil fuels towards utilizing alternative fuel sources. There are several factors contributing towards the shift from fossil fuels to using new alternative fuel sources. The primary reason for this shift is the rise in costs for harvesting, manufacturing and distributing the necessary basic components of gasoline. The increase in manufacturing costs has been passed on to the consumer in the form of increased gas prices. The average price paid per gallon in 2009 is $2.54, compared to $1.11 in 2001 (Energy Information Administration, 2009.) Additional factors contributing to the increase in gas production and distribution are due to the fact that fossil fuel reservoirs are not readily replenished and therefore, provided enough time has passed, our current stores will be depleted and society will be forced to rely on a new energy source. Additional factors contributing towards our need to switch to alternative fuels include the increase in foreign oil dependence to acquire fuel, the rise in air pollution, and the processing and distribution of these alternative fuels are more cost effective. Therefore, based on this and additional rationale, politicians and environmentalists should push for more funding...

Alternative Energy

...Unit 2 Assignment 1 : Alternative Energy Our dependency on fossil fuels here in America has reached a point that we as a society have begun exploring the options of alternative energy. Gas and diesel fuels are a resource that will not last forever. At some point they will no longer be a viable option and we will have to resort to other forms of energy. That is the focus of this assignment, looking at some of the various alternative forms of energy readily available. Where I live there are several homes that have added solar energy as an alternative to the current energy that is run in our area. Solar energy is talked about in our book “The Sciences: An Integrated Approach” as a huge resource here in the United States. (Wiley,2013) According to the author, there are two methods of converting this energy from the sunlight into electricity. The one method is called “solar photovoltaic” which involves using a semiconductor to convert energy produced from the sun into viable electricity. These kinds of innovations will take us a long way in converting from our dependency of fossil fuels to a more infinite sustainable source of energy. Switching over to this or one of the other types of sustainable energy would not be an easy transition. There are so many variables to consider before making the leap to this technology. Space is one of the first variables. It will require a significant amount of land to establish a wind or solar farm. In an area like Harford County, this...

Alternative Energy

...Essay on alternative energy Since hundreds of years oil and gas has been pumped out of the Earth. They are the lifeblood of the modern world and the combustion engine, their heart. The amount being pumped every year is increasing and so is the demand. But how long can this go on for? Oil and gas, the energy lifelines of the world today, will come to an end someday. That someday is not so far, and the world must look for new sources of alternative energy. When we speak of alternative energy, we don’t refer to any which consume fossil fuels or nuclear energy which have undesirable consequences. Alternative energies are energy sources that are renewable and free. As our climate is already suffering from dire consequences of industrialization, we must look for energy sources that release the least amount (if not none) of carbon emissions. These may include Biomass Energy, Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Geothermal Energy, Hydroelectric Energy sources. One of the best choices from environmental perspective could be the use of Solar power which has already been implemented in many countries on test basis. A 1.5 killowatt Pv system will keep more than 110,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere over the next 25years. With solar, there’s no acid rain, no urban smog or pollution of any kind. The energy relies on the nuclear fusion power from the core of the Sun. It can be collected and converted in different ways. Even though solar power is still not sufficient...

Alternative Energy

...Alternative Energy Alternative Energy Energy is an extremely important resource for people and people can’t live without energy. When energy vanishes from people’s life can cause of paralyzed international institutions. The common energy which people use every day is a fossil fuel such as coal, oil and natural gas. Unfortunately, people face some serious problems with above energy sources such as exhaust resources, greenhouse effect and diverse environment pollution. All of the world barrels of oil reserves have already declined and glaciers are melting. If people don’t invest to find new energy sources, a lot of big problems will come in the future. Tues, creating a new energy could be solutions for the problems which people have so far and in a future. In this respect, the alternative energy sources that have become a hot issue in the world are solar energy, nuclear energy and wind power. Energy Problems People all of world realized energy problems that people face so far. There are not only energy problems but also environmental problems too. The energy sources that people every day use are fossil fuels and oil. Stein and Powers (2011) explained disposal of fossil fuels are cause of environmental problems such as global warming. People need to find out the ways to avoid greenhouse effect. Other kinds of fossil fuels such as coal or oil are also not a perfect energy. They have some toxic. There are some problems about coal. Coal can’t use for mobile applications...

Alternative Treatment

...Alternative Treatments- Research Plan Dr. Gail Robin Essentials of Health Care Marketing May 15, 2011 Describe the Problem thoroughly and carefully to consider the full scope Prior to the 1990’s, unproven medications were not fully accepted by society. However in 1991, the efforts of several people led to the establishment of an office of alternative medicine within the National institutes of health (NIH) (Am J Pharm Educ.2006). Unproven medications include dietary supplements, herbal medicines, and homeopathic medications. Unproven therapies encompass medical therapies outside of evidence based medicines such as pseudo medical devices, therapeutic touch, reflexology, naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicines (Am J. Pharm Educ. 2006). Alternative medicines are often times originated in cultures and referred to as culturally base alternative medicines. One of the problems associated with alternative medicines is the insufficient studies which have led to reduced acceptance and educational opportunities to learn more about the benefits of alternative medications (Glob Health Promot., 2009). Over the years there have been an increased use and acceptance of alternative medicine practices and practitioners by patients and healthcare providers. In a survey one conducted by a community based research group in San Diego, California, out of 542 patients at 16 different family practice clinics, it was reported that 21% of the patients have used one or more forms of alternative...

Alternative Splicing

...It has been suggested that alternative splicing plays a forefront role in creating a complex collection of expressed sequences (mRNA) from a smaller number of genes in humans. In fact, Walter Gilbert had expressed that a variety of mRNA isoforms of one gene arises from different combinations of exon-splicing known as alternative splicing (Modrek & Lee, 2002). Alternative splicing can be classified into several types, with each type being different among species. Exon skipping is a type wherein a cassette exon and its bordering introns are spliced out of the transcript. This type is prevalent in higher eukaryotic forms. Two other types of alternative splicing are alternative 3’ splice site (3’ SS) and 5’ SS selection in which two or more splice sites are identified at one end of an exon. These two types account for a small percentage of alternative splicing in higher eukaryotes. Another type of alternative splicing is intron retention, characterized by an intron persisting in the mature mRNA transcript. It is the rarest type of alternative splicing in both vertebrates and invertebrates, but the most prevalent in plants, fungi, and protozoa (Keren et al., 2010). In the wake of discovering these alternative mRNA forms that diversify protein functions of the same gene, there, however, exists a problem of how to differentiate truly functional forms from those that are not, biologically or otherwise, which further opens up an avenue towards the risk of outright designating a discovered...

Alternative Energy

...Munoz English135 Prof Layton 3/24/13 Essay#1-Explanatory Alternative Energy What is Alternative Energy? It’s an energy generated, in ways that do not deplete natural resources or harm the environment. There are about four types of natural alternative energy. Each energy has a different element used to create energy. The types of energy are wind power, solar power, geothermal power, hydroelectric power, and nuclear energy. In the next paragraphs, I’m going to explain the reasons why the world needs alternative energy and how the energy is harnessed. First type of alternative energy is wind power. Using large blades can capture the winds power. The wind causes the blade to rotate turning into electrical current. Electric generators harness all the energy and distribute it to small towns or larger scale towns. There are some advantages for using wind power. First, it causes no pollution. Meaning there are no harmful by-products. Keeping the world safe. Second, wind power is a renewable source; we will never run out of wind. Third, wind turbines can be placed practically anywhere. All you need is a good source of wind. As with any energy source, there are always some concerns. One concern is that wind is never constant. Some days there is significant amount of wind. Then the next day no wind at all. Another concern is that residents that live next to turbine blades think they are ugly. Second type of alternative energy is solar power. This is created by capturing the sun’s...

Introduction (background) http://renewable-solarenergy.com/non-renewable-energy-sources.html What was used before to generate energy? * Fossil fuels(The term ‘fossil fuel’ refers to fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. ) * Where do it come from? How can it be used? It can be used to produce electricity, heating, cooking, transportation and manufacturing.  85% of the energy used in the industrial processes is form the non-renewable type of energy. * Transportation?... http://renewablegreen.net/?p=124 What limitations or disadvantages does non-renewable energy have? * However, after never-ending mining and ‘drill baby drill,’ we realized that there is was limitation to how much we can use them. Because one day, the mines will be empty and drilling pipes would dry out. Over the years, their demand has been far outstripping their availability. * Pollution created (air, water) => Global warming and greenhouse effect * Increasing oil price (because of limited resources) And with demand overpowering supply, prices will continue to rise dramatically. Combustion of fossil fuels emits harmful gases like sulfur dioxide (causing acid rain) and carbon monoxide (contributing to greenhouse effect). Due to the adverse affects, the globe is heating up and the polar ice caps are melting faster. A need...

Alternative Therapies

...There are many different alternative therapies to treat the disorders of the GI system. First of all there are herbal treatments for GI disorders. At least 50% of GI patients have used some type of herbal treatment to relieve their symptoms. According to "Herbal Treatment For Gastrointestinal Disorders" (2013), "the overall philosophy of alternative medicine takes a uniform holistic approach that all diseases result from disturbances at a combination of physical, psychological, social and spiritual levels” (What is complementary and alternative medicine?). Alternative medicine is used to restore balance to the body and help in its own healing process and that GI disorders are the most common diseases that people will use an alternative practitioner. Herbal therapy is used for many different issues including nausea and vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, constipation, and GI cancers ("Herbal Treatment For Gastrointestinal Disorders", 2013). One home remedy for nausea and vomiting is Ginger. It can be used to treat vomiting from things like morning sickness, motion and sea sickness, chemotherapy and surgery. Capsaicin is from the red pepper and it will block the signals in nerve fibers that carry the pain sensation from the abdominal organs to the brain. It’s been found to help things like upper abdominal pain, nausea and bloating. Peppermint oil will cause the smooth muscle in the intestines to not contract. This means that it can be used for relief from irritable...
