Quality Management: Signing Off on a Substandard Product Ruben Ortiz University of Maryland University College AMBA 600 9042 MBA Fundamentals 2158 24 November 2015 Dr. Susan Malone

Abstract
Lauren is a quality engineer that is in charge of overseeing the manufacturing of products offered by the highly respected company that she works for. Her company landed a large deal with a strategic customer with the instruction to design a device to be integrated with another product. The reason to pursue this was that the client was experiencing rapid growth. Lauren’s company was chosen due to the fine reputation they have and the fast turnaround time. As the manufacturing process started, test results showed that the product did not meet the criteria set forth by the client. After informing the supervisor of the product shortfall, the supervisor wants Lauren to put the product through. She went a step further and informed the general manager with the same results. This is a very important customer and a large deal for the company that will establish the company within the industry and the managers do not want to jeopardize the contract with the client. Lauren must find the inner strength to inform all parties involved without jeopardizing her relationship with her supervisors or the company reputation. Pushing products that do not meet standards may have the opposite effect that the supervisors believe they need to follow. They are opening themselves to a major lawsuit from the customer on a situation that is borderline fraudulent. Lauren was hired to be the quality engineer. Failing at this also may jeopardize her professional ambitions at this company and outside of it. Lauren also needs to consider the company’s culture because there might be a problem with it. After issuing a written report to all affected parties, Lauren

Amba 600 Critical Thinking Paper

...Critical Thinking Assignment – Goleman vs. McCrimmon by Brandon E. Smith AMBA 600 7461 October 25th, 2014 Goleman’s Major Conclusions and Research Methods Regarding Emotional Intelligence In Daniel Goleman's “The Emotional Intelligence of Leaders”, real life examples, scientific facts, and the overall impacts of emotional intelligence on leaders and organizations are highlighted. Overall, high emotional intelligence in leaders is more dependent on success within an organization as opposed to high rational intelligence. This basically means that a majority of successful individuals take into account the emotions of themselves and others, while personal knowledge has minimal bearing on the degrees of achievement. Goleman points out that there is minimal variation in the IQ's of organizational leaders, further supporting that emotional intelligence is a bigger determinant in measuring accomplishments on all organizational levels. From a scientific standpoint, emotions are controlled internally by the limbic system. Contained within this region of the brain is a structure called the amygdala, which stores a person's life-long memory. The amygdala is also responsible for controlling all of the different types of emotional reactions a person may experience. The author’s observations of the biological aspects of emotional intelligence, which includes the purpose of the limbic system and the function of the amygdala, are critical in understanding why emotions...

Critical Thinking-Goleman and Mccrimmon

...Critical Thinking AMBA 600 July 22, 2014 Critical Thinking Summary of Daniel Goleman’s Article on Leadership. In the article titled, “The Emotional Intelligence of Leaders”, author Daniel Goleman highlights the importance of emotional intelligence as it pertains to leadership. He highlights the notion that many leaders today may possess high IQs and the necessary qualifications to be in positions of leadership but often times are deficient emotionally. This can cause them to lose that human touch that allows them to associate with others under their management. Goleman goes on to mention the dimensions of emotional intelligence and these include: “Self awareness, managing emotions, motivating others, showing empathy and, staying connected.” (Goleman, 1998). He describes “self awareness” as knowing yourself and what you stand for in life. Self awareness allows leaders to make decisions in keeping with their own ethics and morals and having the confidence to implement strategies that they know will work. Self awareness allows one to question certain decisions based on one’s own gut feeling or instinct. The second dimension of emotional intelligence that Goleman mentions is “managing emotions”. Leaders often times face many emotions depending on situations that may occur during the course of their work. The inability to harness ones emotions can have dire consequences on ones career and can often times lead the individual down a destructive path. Effective leaders...

Goleman and Mccrimmon Assignment

...Author Note This paper was prepared for AMBA 600 Goleman and McCrimmon Assignment Summary and Discussion Summary: Thought leadership: a radical departure from traditional, positional leadership The article Thought leadership: a radical departure from traditional, positional leadership written by McCrimmon (2005) covers many different types of leadership. The article compares thoughtful leadership to traditional leadership styles. In the article the writer explains the differences between the several types of leadership and explains why thoughtful leadership is the best form of leadership. Shared leadership is described as when all members of a team contribute equally to the success of the team. The problem with this type of leadership occurs when the group no longer has a need for a leader. This typically happens when a team is self sufficient. They are able to achieve their goals with no guidance. Leadership at this point only negatively impacts the group. The group is successful not because the group lacks leadership but due to the overabundance of leadership. Each member of the group brings their experiences to the group allowing the team to be successful. Sometimes within a shared leadership organization disruptive leadership can occur. Disruptive leadership occurs when a member of a team takes charge of a group with no formal authority. This can cause major problems within the organization. Often times the productivity of the team will go down. The team will also...
