...is the American Cancer Society. About 4 years ago I lose my mother with lymphoma; her death left pain and gaping hole at the core of my life puzzle. For that I would like share with others about the several nonprofit companies whose goals are to help others. The American Cancer Society (ACS) saves lives by helping others stay well and get well. Their main focus is to prevent cancer or detect it as its earliest, most treatable stage. American Cancer Society: History: The American Cancer Society was first organized in 1913. At that time 15 doctors and businessman in New York City got together to create what was then called the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC). In that time in history it was not considered appropriate to mention the word “Cancer” in public. Information concerning this bad illness was hidden in climate of fear and denial. At the same time, over75, 000 people died each year of cancer in just in the United States. The most important item on the founders’ agenda was to raise awareness of this illness, before any other educate doctors, nurses, patients and family members about cancer. Marjorie Illig was an ASCC field representative in 1936. She suggested creating a large network of new volunteers whose purpose was to wage the War on Cancer. In 1935 there were 15,000 people involved in cancer control in the U.S by 1938 there was ten times that number (American Cancer Society, 2015). Ovarian Cancer Public Awareness Campaign

...Before talking about public awareness campaign on ovarian cancer and how badly it is needed, let’s clarify what ovarian cancer is. As American Cancer Society explains “ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries that are reproductive glands found only in females (women). The ovaries produce eggs for reproduction. They are also the main source of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. One ovary is on each side of the uterus in the pelvis” ("What Is Ovarian Cancer?"). One should understand that there are several types of cancer that develop from cells of the ovary and are considered to be one disease process. According to the information, provided at medicinenet.com, usually, “tumors arise from the epithelium or lining cells of the ovary. These include epithelial ovarian (from the cells on the surface of the ovary), fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal (the lining inside the abdomen that coats many abdominal structures) cancer” ("Ovarian Cancer: Facts on Symptoms and Treatment"). Obviously, there are some risk factors to pay attention to and the list of symptoms that women can identify themselves. Speaking about the risk factors that influence on the development of ovarian cancer, women should take into consideration the following key factors: age and family history. The older a women get the higher the risk. Thus, women who are over the age of 50 are more susceptible to ovarian cancer and ovarian cancer more often occurs in women who have already gone through the menopause...

...been diagnosed with cancer. Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why? Unfortunately, I do not have to imagine having a family friend recently diagnosed with cancer. Sad-fully, this is a true reality for one of my closest friend’s two year old son. Little David was diagnosed with ALS (b-cell) in the past months. Although the mortality rate is lower for “b-cell” rather than “t-cell” ALS, it is heartbreaking to see the devastation that cancer brings to a family unit. The most challenging part of treating cancer for my friend’s son is seeing the psychological, physical and mental deterioration that occurs to a young body going through cancer treatment. Although he is taking the chemotherapy well, he has lost the ability to walk and his extensive vocabulary is down to three simple words. He has states of acute psychosis that are hard for his parents to deal with. David’s father is a CRNA and his mother a CVICU nurse, even at their level of expertise this it is unbearable at times to know everything about a disease yet have no control on its effects to your child. I know I have strayed away from the question, but wanted to stress the importance of why ACS exists. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research,...

Esophageal Cancer

...Esophageal Cancer The human body consists of millions of living cells. These cells grow, divide and die. This process goes on in our body without us even knowing it is happening. Our body is an amazing creation that scientist still can’t completely explain how and why all things happen. When our bodies are younger our cells divide faster which lends to our bodies growing. As we become older this process slows down and usually only divides to repair or replace old or injured cells. When cells begin to grow out of control this causes abnormal cell growth. The growth of these cells, start to take over other tissues, something that the normal cells can’t do. The growth and taking over the cells is what then begins the start of cancer cells. Depending on where this growth occurs depends on where the cancer begins to grow. The cells turn into cancer cells because the DNA becomes damaged. Usually when DNA is damaged our cells repair the damage, but with cancer these cells can longer be repaired and the cell is not able to die like it normally would. Then the damaged or sick cells start to grow and carry on the damaged DNA. This then begins the process of cancer. It is not fully understood how and why these cells become damaged and cancer sets in. But what we do know is that the damage to the DNA is usually caused by mistakes that happen while the normal cell is reproducing or by a cause in our environment. Exposure to obvious things like smoking and alcohol are clearly risk...

The World Needs to Know

...sentence, someone in the world will have died of cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in world, accounting for around 7.6 million deaths alone in the year 2008(WHO, 2013). With such an overwhelming fatality rate (as seen in figure1-1), it is paramount for medical research to continue to provide new and improved treatments for patients. The business behind cancer is one of high risk and even higher cost. While the focus is on creating treatments that are more and more effective, it is often stifled by the process to get approved. To look at it frankly, most radical treatments never make it off the ground due to the Federal Department of Agriculture. The cost incurred by the company developing the new treatment can be around 500 million dollars. In no way can these small startup companies afford this massive purse. Worse still, if the results are found inconclusive, the treatment must go through yet another clinical trial all over again. This is one of the main problems with the economics of cancer treatments. According to an article in business week a study found “That only 8% of experimental cancer drugs end up receiving FDA approval” (Arnst, 2008). The fact that so much time and resources are spent on drugs that will never see the market is a huge impact on the problem as a whole. The time, money and resources that go into each individual treatment are almost guaranteed to be a failed investment. With cancer being a billion dollar industry, one can only assume...

Cancer Industry Corruption

...billions of dollars spent on cancer research over many decades, and the constant promise of a cure which is forever "just around the corner", cancer continues to increase? Especially when According to the International Agency for Research in Cancer "...80-90 per cent of human cancer is determined environmentally and thus theoretically avoidable." Hi my name is Spenser Grandstaff and today I would like to present some startling information and talk to you about the corruption of the cancer industry and how it affects all of us. A top medical doctor recently came out and said conventional cancer doctors regularly lie about success rates, and the system is designed to steer patients toward the most expensive treatment possible. This wasn’t just any doctor. It was Otis Brawley, head of the American Cancer Society — the very heart of the cancer treatment establishment. He said unproven cancer treatments are in widespread use across the U.S. And he wasn’t’ talking about natural or alternative treatments. He was referring to things like PSA exams and chemotherapy. A colleague of mr brawley was Dr. John Bailer, who spent 20 years on the staff of the U.S. National Cancer Institute and was editor of its journal. He said "My overall assessment is that the national cancer programme must be judged a qualified failure" Dr. Bailer also says: "The five year survival statistics of the American Cancer Society are very misleading. They now count things that are not cancer, and, because we are...
