American heroes have many identifiable traits. A commonality in both Hidden Figures and The Right Stuff is how the films characterized their heroes. Both movies rely on identifiable images of an American hero to in their presentation of the people that worked at NASA. One of the traits that defines an American hero is their boldness of character, their willingness to do what others haven’t. U.S. News and World Report reporter, Roger Simon, conveys the idea, “To be an American is to dare. We will sometimes fail because failure is part of being a human being. But our failures do not define us. Our daring does” (Simon 10). American visionaries have created many positive changes for America. The spirit of these heroes can easily be seen throughout …show more content…
The astronauts of the Mercury Seven, normally stationed at Cape Canaveral, visit Langley Research Center during a public tour in Hidden Figures. In this visit, the astronauts are shaking hands with the research and development team of NASA. The men near the end of the white workers and begin to make their way to the side where the black Americans are standing. At this point, the tour guide tries to send them to another part of the facilities, as she clearly feels that the astronauts have met all the people they needed to meet. The actor that plays John Glenn says, “Well heck, we haven’t shaken all the hands yet,” he then proceeds down the line of African Americans, shaking hands and talking to everyone (Hidden Figures). Although the writers for the movie The Right Stuff do, at times, show their characters as fallible human beings, there are also instances where their characters’ behaviors embody a sense of honor. A confrontation between the Head of NASA and John Glenn leads the Head to deliver the threat that if John does not follow orders than he will be booted off the flight lineup. The astronauts know that if John gets kicked out of the lineup it is likely that their opportunity to go into space will come much sooner. Instead of using this opportunity to advance, they bond together and voice that if Glenn doesn’t go up none of them will (The Right Stuff). In this moment, the viewers of the film understand that although flawed, these astronauts had “the right

Where to Draw the Line

...“In the U.S., baseball players often fulfill the role of hero and cultural icon because they are imbued with traits we admire and that resonate through time.” (USA TODAY 44). For example Babe Ruth was and still is one of the biggest American sports icon. With the heaviest bat ever recorded at 54-ounces, his fun attitude and always loving towards children. The Babe is still a hero to baseball fans of all ages. Now what about baseball heroes in the 20th and 21st century? Of course there are still some out there playing the game today but are they anything of natural talent like the Babe? When I say natural talent I am speaking about the hard working ball players that don’t need to rely on the Performing-Enhancing Drugs also known as PED’s. Looking back when I was younger I had Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa going at it for the Home Run record, and turns out that McGwire was using the PED’s. So does that still make him a hero? Today in America baseball there is a huge problem that is jeopardizing the great American Past-Time. “There are more than 129 MLB players that have been linked to steroids” (The Steroid Era 1). Most of those 129 players were in the Mitchell report, which was created by Senator Mitchell. You have all your favorite stars and heroes getting suspended from usage of PED’s. Many things have popped up when someone fails a drug test. For example anabolic steroids, weight loss supplements, and even female fertility drugs. When I hear these drugs that these baseball athletes...

Lies My Teacher Told Me

...is because they want to avoid controversy and don’t want to put anything in textbooks that will show the history of the United States in a bad light and want to show the United States as heroes. To make his point, Loewen emphasizes the "dark side" of U.S. history, because that's the part that's missing from our education system. So, for example, we never learned that Woodrow Wilson ran one of the most racist administrations in history and helped to set back progress in race relations that had begun after the Civil War. Helen Keller's socialist leanings and political views are omitted and we only learn that she overcame blindness and deafness. John Brown is portrayed as a wild-eyed nut that ran amok until he was caught and hung, rather than an eloquent and dedicated abolitionist who expressed some of the same views as Lincoln. Loewen's book illustrates the saying that "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Ignorance of our real history also renders us incapable of fully understanding the present and coming to grips with the issues of our time. Reconstruction, which textbooks put the blame on black people for the failure to integrate with society; the Civil War, which supposedly started because the South wanted more state power; treatment of Native Americans, taught to be a natural cause of a progressive world and society. This history casts current racial attitudes and issues in a different light than most of our high school graduates are likely...

The Amazing Spiderman And The Comic Code: A Case Study

... to look into the issue of comics they brought in all of the comic publishers to defend their own comics and the potential fate of the comic book world.(Nyberg) This was a big deal for the industry at this time because it put the spotlight on the publishing companies to make a change with the industry. The official report that came out by the government said that Horror comics were considered by the Senate for its inapposite content. They are the contribution for the kids acting up because of their material in them. Advertising of weapons in comics was considered as well. The government said in a statement saying “The subcommittee flatly rejects all suggestions of governmental censorship as being totally out of keeping with our basic American concepts of a free press operating in a free land for a free people.” (5rtyfkujhkilk 29)They said it isn’t the government's job to tell kids what to read or not but the parent's job. They did say that the comic group should censor themselves. The publisher is the only one that should regulate the comics material, not anyone else.(sdfghjkl) The government is not legally able to take over the comic industry like a role of a dictator would because of freedom of the press. The other thing is if people are upset with comics then don’t buy them make the companies go out of business altogether and the parents need to take care of their own kids to it isn’t the government's job to decide what kids can and can't read. People have a say so for what...

Chavez And Youfzai Argumentative Essay

...“When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.”(– John Basil Barnhill) What the quote is trying to say is if you fear the government, they will feel more powerful. Then if the government fears us, we will all be more powerful then them. And this is what is going to be discussed today. The government has ruled and brought fear to blacks, Mexicans, and girls. But not to worry; Dr. king, Chavez and Yousfzai will fight back and there going to make the government fear us. What Dr. king is fighting about is; blacks should have equal rights just like whites do. For example you can’t say you hate a piece of cake because you don’t the color. It’s about how it’s good inside not what it looks like outside. In Chavez speech, he is fighting for Mexicans to stop being forced into farm labor. Lastly in...

Do the Right Thing Film Analysis

...The first time we saw each other after seeing Spike Lee's movie Do the Right Thing, my sister and I had a fight over lunch. It was one of those things you do with a lover, or sometimes with a close friend about politics, where the terms you disagree on are too buried to perceive or even to guess, at the time, that they're there. You can be agreeing about all the superficial details and about the largest of generalizations all along--my sister and I both found the film powerfully moving--and still wind up fighting about ... something--one of those disagreements that leave you dissatisfied and unexplainably angry. Her arguments weren't unfamiliar. I had run into very similar concerns, interpretations, and vocabulary in some of the mainstream criticism on the film. But it was only after stewing about our lunch for a couple of days that I began to figure out how completely at odds with the movie I saw was the one she--and those critics--had seen. The more I thought about it, the more I could see that these were no idiosyncratic subjective responses. Rather, our differences were bound up with Spike Lee's mix of styles of representation, which my sister and I responded to selectively and from very different perspectives. While Lee's representation of the Italians was moving and meaningful to her, she could find nothing in his portrayal of the black community that would provide for the same feelings. For, I came to see, while Lee uses to elaborate his white characters methods and narrative...

Paradise Now Movie Review

...Lauren Davis Dr. Stephanie Wheatley Intro to REL 1113 Nov 15 2013 Paradise Now Review The movie Paradise Now follows the lives of two best friends Said and Khaled in present day Islam-oriented Palestine, In Nablas on the West Bank. Nablas is a sort of slum type area; there are many parts in the movie where we see the buildings are broken down and ruined. For example, Said and Khaled both live with their whole family in their shack style houses that look like beat up apartments, when it shows them sleeping they are sleeping on simple mats on the floor, instead of a real bed or even a spring mattress. The opening scene shows Said is shown working on a car in what looks like an old rusty junk yard where soon Khaled and their boss come in all with bitter attitudes. Throughout the movie, the characters such as Khaled and Said constantly refer to their city as “a jail” and When Suha tells the cab driver “things will get better” he comments back the question “you’re not from here?”; Giving the audience the feeling that those who live there have a very negative outlook on life. They always talk about the violence going on between Nablas and Tel Aviv; also giving the idea that those who grew up in Nablas never knew anything more than violence and to hate those who they think hate them. The movie quickly turns when Said is approached by Jamal (a man they have known for a long time) who tells them they have been chosen by Allah to carry out “the next mission”. He seems very excited...

Secrets

...Smoking  Definition Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco encased in cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. Casual smoking is the act of smoking only occasionally, usually in a social situation or to relieve stress. A smoking habit is a physical addiction to tobacco products. Many health experts now regard habitual smoking as a psychological addiction, too, and one with serious health consequences. Smoking risks Smoking is recognized as the leading preventable cause of death, causing or contributing to the deaths of approximately 430,700 Americans each year. Anyone with a smoking habit has an increased chance of lung, cervical, and other types of cancer; respiratory diseases such as emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis; and cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, and atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of the arteries). The risk of stroke is especially high in women who take birth control pills. Smoking can damage fertility, making it harder to conceive, and it can interfere with the growth of the fetus during pregnancy. It accounts for an estimated 14% of premature births and 10% of infant deaths. There is some evidence that smoking may cause impotence in some men. Because smoking affects so many of the body's systems, smokers often have vitamin deficiencies and suffer oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that steal electrons from other molecules, turning the other molecules into free...

Senator McCain said the other day that we might be mired for a hundred years in Iraq, which is reason enough to not give him four years in the White House. If we had chosen a different path, the right path, we could have finished the job in Afghanistan, and put more resources into the fight against bin Laden; and instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars in Baghdad, we could have put that money into our schools and hospitals, our road and bridges – and that's what the American people need us to do right now. Social Science Fiction, a Sub-Genre of Science Fiction Seen in Television

...When thinking of science fiction television programs, one usually thinks of aliens, space ships, and laser blasters, this tends to shed a more childish light on the genre and most people tend to dismiss it as being no more than mindless entertainment. While there has certainly been a surplus of the campy science fiction shows on the air, some shows have used the science fiction genre to tackle serious social issues as well. This essay will take a look at two shows 54 years apart and will analyze how both use social concerns of the time period and create memorable narratives that speculate about human behavior and interactions. The first show this essay will look at is the generation defining classic The Twilight Zone (1959-1964), and the second show is a modern cult hit from the United Kingdom Utopia (2013-2014). //Through a comparative analysis of the episode “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” from The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) and “Episode 5” of the British cult hit, Utopia (2013-2014) this essay illustrates how the science fiction genre can be and has been used generation after generation to highlight certain social issues. Whereas The Twilight Zone uses America’s anxieties of communism and consumer culture to cause paranoia in the early sixties, Utopia uses big business, government conspiracies, and overpopulation in a plot that stirs up concern for the environment. Ultimately this essay will illustrate how social issues lay the foundation for a compelling science fiction...

Walter Lee is obsessed with obtaining money from the very beginning of the play. His very happiness depends on success, and he measures this in wealth. 1. He longs to be successful. His speech at the end of Act II, Scene 2 beginning "You wouldn’t understand yet, son, but your daddy’s gonna make [...] a business transaction that’s going to change our lives [...] You just name it, son, and I'll hand you the world!" (Hansberry, 96) 2. Money is the only means of being successful or obtaining success. When asked why he cares so much about money, Walter screams, "Because it is life, Mama!" (Hansberry, 64) II. Mama encourages him to take her place as head of the family, despite disagreeing with his lust for wealth. 1. Mama tries to convince him that money is not the solution to Walter's crisis of purpose in a speech: "Something has changed. You something new, boy. [...] You ain't satisfied or proud of nothing we done. You my children - but how different we done become." (Hansberry 62) 2. ...Disney characters : the reflect of women's place in the society Walt Disney, under his real name Walt Elias Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago. He founded in 1923 the famous Walt Disney Company with his brother Roy as the Disney Brothers Studios. After three years, the studios take the name Walt Disney Company. Their first animated film came out in 1937 "Snow White" inspired by a famous children's story by the Brothers Grimm. Thereafter follow many animated films like Cinderella, Mulan, or Rebel. One of the most important question in recent years is : What image Disney returns with respect to the role of women and the role that women play in society in the twenty-first century? In fact, Disney is primarily a media and integrate media stereotypes and habits of society to which they belong in their history or animated movie.
