“Amigo” is set around 1900 in a hamlet called San Isidro. It is a movie directed by John Sayles. It is set around 1900 in a hamlet called San Isidro during the time of the Philippine-American War. At that time, Andres Bonifacio was already dead and Emilio Aguinaldwas the so-called president. The hamlet had Rafael Dacanay as their mayor. The movie started with Rafael trying to give a fair and firm little village justice over some sweet potatoes conflict. He was firm but fair, so he was respected in San Isidro. He had a son and a wife who lived together with him in the small village. On the other hand, he had a brother named Simón who was the leader of the local “insurrectos” or Filipino rebel group that were staying in the mountains and caves near the small village. One day, the American troops led by Colonel Hardacre arrived at the hamlet; they gathered the townspeople and freed the prisoners including the deceitful priest and Spanish soldiers. Afterwards, Colonel Hardacre left the hamlet leaving Lieutenant Ike Compton and some other soldiers. Lieutenant Ike went for the priest to for assistance in communicating with the people of the small village. Ike and his men, during their stay, started to show sympathy. They even had feasts and drank but the rebels took the chance and tried to attack the Americans but they failed and a child from the village was shot. They had force Rafael to lead them to where his brother is but he refused so he was imprisoned but was freed when he was re-elected as the mayor of San Isidro. During also the stay of the Americans, one of the most captivating moments was the lovers, an American and a woman living in the small village, who was able to send their feelings even though they do not understood each language. At the end of the movie, Rafael was hanged to death and later, the members of the “insurrectos” surrendered. One amazing thing

History

...Katrina Gandionco G,TTH, 4:30-6:00 A Taste of Filipino Past: Amigo Amigo is the very first historical film of the Philippines I’ve ever seen. I was surprised that an American director was able to produce such a film since the economic, religious, and political settings are very evident and it looks like the work of a fellow Filipino. It is such an informative film, and it shows where the modern Filipino gets his qualities from. The movie began when the Americans started occupying the villages, so the class structure among the Filipinos weren’t very evident. Although it was clear that Rafael, played by Joel Torre, was the person in charge because of the way he would try to stand up to the Americans, how the people would sometimes ask him what to do, and since they all voted for him for the first round of elections in the village. It was also mentioned in the movie that he was the owner of the land and the other people in the village were working for their harvest in his land. It was evident that the Americans felt superior to the Filipinos. Aside from the fact that they had guns, they saw the Filipinos as monkeys, talking down on them. It’s true that they were probably more intelligent and experienced than the Filipinos, but they treated them like savages. One part that I think was clear that they didn’t consider the welfare of the Philippines was when officer in charge of the whole operation scolded the officer...

Ice Cream Dessert

...addition to the natural ingredients. Philippines’ version for ice cream: Sorbetes is usually produced from unknown factories and sold from carts that roam the streets, exposing it to pollution. Thus, it is also called dirty ice cream; though it is not really dirty as the name implies. Kids love ice cream, and so do grown-ups, but to indulge in this frozen delight can mean a lot of fat and calories, depending on the choices. The calories in a cup of ice cream can vary anywhere from 180 to 600, depending on brand, fat content, sugar content, and flavor. Nonfat or fat-free ice creams contain virtually no fat: vegetable gums are added to make them creamy and mixtures are made in soft serve machines to whip in additional air and ice crystals. Most nonfat ice creams contain 90 to 100 calories per half cup but not all, leaving health-conscious consumers, who avoid calories and fat, fewer options, or none at all. A newly industrialized country, the Philippine economy has been transitioning from one based on agriculture to one based more on services and manufacturing. Despite this, the agricultural sector employs close to 32% of the country's total labor force of around 38.1 million. In 2012, gross output in agriculture was valued at P1.4 trillion at current prices: 1.17 percent higher than last year’s level. This constitutes output from camote at 6144.92 million, which increased by 4.39 percent. Camote is an excellent choice of root crop for Philippines since it grows in abundant sunshine...

Who Made Rizal Foremost National Hero

...Who Made Rizal Our Foremost National Hero, and Why? BY: ESTEBAN A. DE OCAMPO Dr. Jose Rizal Mercado y Alonso, or simply Jose Rizal (1861-1896), is unquestionably the greatest hero & martyr of our nation. The day of his birth & the day of his execution are fittingly commemorated by all classes of our people throughout the length & breadth of this country & even by Filipinos & their friends abroad. His name is a byword in every Filipino home while his picture adorns the postage stamp & paper money of widest circulation. No other Filipino hero can surpass Rizal in the number of towns, barrios, & streets named after him; in the number of educational institutions, societies, & trade names that bear his name; in the number of persons, both Filipinos & foreigners, who were named "Rizal" or "Rizalina" because of their parents’ admiration for the Great Malayan; & in the number of laws, Executive Orders & Proclamations of the Chief Executive, & bulletins, memoranda, & circulars of both the bureaus of public & private schools. Who is the Filipino writer & thinker whose teachings & noble thoughts have been frequently invoked & quoted by authors & public speakers on almost all occasions? None but Rizal. And why is this so? Because as biographer Rafael Palma (1) said, "The doctrines of Rizal are not for one epoch but for all epochs. They are as valid today as they were yesterday. It cannot be said that because the political...

Bahay Na Bato

...THE SPANISH COLONIAL TRADITION From 1565 to 1898 the Philippines was a colony of Spain. During this long period, Spanish-influenced architecture appeared, namely, the iglesia or simbahan (church) and its adjoining campanario (bell tower) and convento (residence of the parish priest), the escuela (school), the fuerza or fortaleza (fortification), the civic buildings like the casa real and tribunal, the farola (lighthouses), the bahay na bato (dwellings of wood and stone), and the puente (stone bridges). It is generally acknowledged that the Philippines is the bastion of Christianity in the Orient. Some scholars believe that, because of this, the country absorbed the greatest degree of influence from the west in the Asian region, losing much of its identity in the process. Other scholars believe, however, that all these influences were really assimilated by the older ethnic base, which actually indigenized them. It is pointed out, for example, that the Spanish word for church, iglesia, never became fully accepted among the Filipinos, who used their own terms to denote a place of worship. Thus the Tagalog and Cebuano use simbahan, the Ilocano, simbaan, and the Pampango, pisamban. This process of indigenization was to characterize much of Filipino construction during the more than three centuries of Spanish colonization. The Beginnings The history of Philippine architecture under the Spanish regime begins with the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi’s expedition in 1565. In Cebu...

Valentine

...Valentine's Day customs developed in early modern England and spread throughout the Anglosphere in the 19th century. In the later 20th and early 21st centuries, these customs have also spread to other countries along with other aspects of American pop culture, but its impact so far has been rather more limited than that of Halloween, or that of US pop-culture inspired aspects of Christmas (such as Santa Claus). Due to a concentrated marketing effort, Valentine's Day is celebrated in some East Asian countries with Chinese and South Koreans spending the most money on Valentine's gifts. China In China, the common situation is the man gives chocolate, flowers or both to the woman that he loves. In Chinese, Valentine's Day is called lovers' festival (simplified Chinese: 情人节; traditional Chinese: 情人節; pinyin: qíng rén jié). The so-called "Chinese Valentine's Day" is the Qixi Festival, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It commemorates a day on which a legendary cow herder and weaving maid are allowed to be together. Valentine's Day on February 14 is not celebrated because it is often too close to the Chinese New Year, which usually falls on either January or February. In Chinese culture, there is an older observance related to lovers, called "The Night of Sevens" (Chinese: 七夕; pinyin: Qi Xi). According to the legend, the Cowherd star and the Weaver Maid star are normally separated by the Milky Way (silvery river) but are allowed to meet by...

...SHORT HISTORY OF THE ILOILO PROVINCIAL HIGH SCHOOL The Iloilo National High School (INHS) is a provincial high School located in Iloilo City, Philippines. The history of the Iloilo High School dates back to the later part of 1902 when a school called the Iloilo Normal School was established in a two-storey building in front of and across the street of the present Provincial Building (now Casa Plaza) to meet the future need for Filipino teachers. The minimum requirement for admission was the completion of the elementary education in the old Spanish schools.  The first batch of teachers were selected from experienced American teachers. The first principal was Mr. Lutz, who, despite his past sixty years, was a very kind and understanding man.  The initial enrolment was about 250 and was divided into 5 sections. By 1903, the school had a very active literary society called Philomathean and had also a strong baseball team. In 1904, Mr. Covell succeeded Mr. Lutz as principal. To accommodate more students, preparatory classes were organized. For the first time Filipino students were selected as government pensionados to continue their studies in the United States.  Among those selected were Candido Alcazar, Ambrosio Gison, Delfin Jaranilla, Carlos Lopez, Leon Nava, Balbino Palmares, Graciano Rico, Cirilo Torreblanca and Felix Valencia. In 1905, Mr. Maxson succeeded Mr. Covell as principal.  The pensionados then were Geronimo Huising, Isabelo Lagniton, Claro Pendon, and...

...RISK –RETURN TRADE -OFF ON THE NIGERIAN STOCK EXCHANGE OLOWE, OLUSEGUN BANKING AND FINANCE DEPARTMENT COVENANT UNIVERSITY OTA. NIGERIA E-mail: oreoba2000@yahoo.com oreoba2000@gmail.com 1 ABSTRACT Expected excess returns on bonds and stocks, real interest rates, and risk shift over time in predictable ways. Furthermore, these shifts tend to persist for long period. Changes in investment opportunities can alter the risk-return trade-off of bonds, stocks, and cash across investment horizons, thus creating a term structure of the risk-return trade-off. This term structure can be extracted from a parsimonious model of return dynamics, which was illustrated with data from the stock market in Nigeria using the VAR model in the light of the reforms in the financial services sector coupled with the stock market crash and the global financial crisis. Using annual returns over the period of 1981 to 2008, volatility persistence, asymmetric properties and riskreturn relationship are investigated for the Nigerian stock market visà-vis the calendar effects on stock market performances. The degree of volatility persistence and leverage effect supporting the work of Nelson (1991) was visible in the relationship between value index of stocks, market capitalization and the volume of transactions. Key words: Calendar effect, Volatility, Stock market, Financial Reforms, Global Financial crisis, Volatility persistence, VAR, Risk-return tradeoff 2 INTRODUCTION The major flow...

...Ang Filipino at Tagalog, Hindi Ganoong Kasimple ni Ricardo Ma. Nolasco, Ph.D.
